This was a defining moment for me as an Olympics lover. It was everything I ever wanted out of a woman--defying convention, flaunting the status quo, leaving an untouchable legacy, all in the face of what might otherwise be considered a "failure." I remember this performance SO vividly. I stood up and cheered with tears in my eyes. Will always be a top Olympic performance in my eyes because that's what the games are all about--triumph in adversity.
Wow! Women who go against the norms and are winners in their own light ❣️ Thanks for showing us it's doable. I love going against the norms and doing you. 💯❤️💥🥰
She didn’t win at the Olympics because she was not “following the standards” of ice-skating. In some of her interviews she also says that she thinks being black at the time was restricting her in this field - though she added she didn’t know how much it impacted her career.
Surya Bonaly chosen for three Olympic games is triumph. That backflip was always for the audience and her heart. It has been said she was one of the female skaters to do combo-jumps in her programs. By the way, saw a video about Mabel Fairbanks where they described one of the many spins she created that is now referred to as the Bielmann (sic) spin. Believe it's time to give Fairbanks the credit she deserves. Oh, boy; can of worms, anyone?
Was in a hallway at a rink in MN putting on my daughter's fig skates for session circa 2019. We were all alone, except for a quiet lady sitting right next to my daughter on the bench, seemingly killing time. I always stand up with the fig skate between my thigh like a vice, and my kid raises up her leg into the skate, and I tie it up real good and tight. This lady was watching us intently putting on the skates, as if she had never seen it done that way before, the way my father did my skates long ago. Later I saw her at the rink as a new coach along with her coach husband, who was from my area. Somebody said this lady coach was in the olympics and done a back flip. Curious, I looked it up, and yes the lady sitting next to us on the bench did a back flip. What a small world.
She was an AMAZING Figure Skater & that signature move made her stand out man! I was pissed with those biased, jack assed judges at the time who couldn't respect the woman's sheer athleticism!
Many black professional figure skaters with superb skills and unparalleled grace never received the notoriety or recognition they deserved. It’s such a shame because the world itself was cheated from the sheer beauty and joy that they brought to the art. 😢
Surya Bonaly had just skated after Tara Lipinski, so she knew she wouldn’t win the gold. After messing up a few of the jumps, she added the backflip at the last minute, and made it a jump combination.
This was actually the exhibition after the competition. She placed third after the short program and fourth after the long program. She did not do a back flip in either of those programs.
@FemaleLead1 It's VERY unclear. You highlight that "catastrophe struck" and show her falling on a triple flip. You then say that "a mistake like this meant she wouldn't win a Gold Medal". This is her exhibition... AFTER the competition. Next time, please do your research. It looks like you have other footage when she did the backflip IN competition at the 98 Olympics. Highlight that, and only that. It gets your point across.
@@Will_3000Exactly, it seems like the creator of this video just pulled fake 😅information from the last hair in the back of their brain for this video. Nothing in this video is true at ALL.
She received a bronze medal but she deserved a gold for that amazing work. But because she was not known like the other athletes and the penalized her because of it
No she wasn’t, she had a DISASTROUS program for all 1992 and 1998 Olympics. She lost focus and fell on at least 4 jumps on both of them. Do your research, she wasn’t robbed, she literally performed terribly on both. Sometimes I wish people could just do their research, especially when they know NOTHING about figure skating.
@@flightoflightning2505 She was robbed! Her performance was daring. I love how some grumpy 50 year old responds and thinks they are knowledgeable. Dear Plastic creating generation (50+) you know nothing, do your research her performance is unmatched to this day.
They aren’t, when Surya was good she was one of the best jumpers, but with the pressure of the Olympics she trembled and did not skate a SINGLE CLEAN PROGRAM in the Olympics. I would in fact tell you she was overscored.
Backflips are banned because you land on two feet. And with skating leaps you only land on one foot, plus it's for the skater's own safety that backflips are not done. However, Surya Bonaly lands on one foot only.
She deserved gold at the 1994 World Championships, but only got silver. That is, just because they were held in Japan, 5 of the 9 judges gave the gold to the Japanese girl. ua-cam.com/video/YnZjs6qsHA0/v-deo.htmlsi=1oFhKXly9St88RAw
Surya fell on her triple loop and underrotated her 3F-3T combo, and two-footed her first 3Lz, while Sato skated a CLEAN, PERFECT program with no mistakes. Yuka Sato deserved the gold 100%.
Thank you for watching this video! Feel free to subscribe / recommend other inspiring women ❤
She deserved a medal for that one jump alone!!! How mind blowing!!!
She is a real legend in her field ❤️

To perform with such strength and excellence and never win a medal? She was robbed!

She was a phenomenal skater and not to have won a medal or to stand on the podium was an injustice to her craft.
She should have won an Olympic medal she was one of a kind
That deserved a gold medal to me!
If they judged her work for the performance she delivered then should would have definitely had it
I loved her. And goes down in history
BRILLIANT !!!!!

It looks like she accomplished something greater than a medal.
26:20 yep she is french. Surya Bonaly! It was in 1998.
She was the greatest! I just loved her non-conformist "screw you" attitude.

Wow! I never heard of her til now, but how incredibly impressive! A real travesty she never won any Olympic medals.
Hi
Hello
Bonaly?
So I stopped watching ice skating since
Illegal move. Thought backflips were banned.

She was cheated! She should've won a medal.
I was never a fan of this skater. Not much of a dancer. She should have stayed in gymnastics..
Shes just mad shes not given attention
