  • Chromatic aberration is an example of a lens defect resulting from the dispersion of colors. Light travels slower in glass than in air. That is why light refracts into the glass. Interestingly blue light travels slower in glass than red light, which means blue light refracts more so than red. The result is a separation of blue and red colors. This effect shows up in any glass lens and is called chromatic aberration. Watch this video to learn more.

    The red and blue, actually, would appear to be a telltale sign of atmospheric diffraction which is not unique to refractive optics.
