@@KampKenan Like you'd say he's cute AFTER he bit your nose! The words that would flow out would embarrass a sailor, heck a native New Yorker(!), if that terrapin brat ever caught you! 🤬
Otis is a Gamera, Junior natural but he's NOT a creature you let anywhere near your nose! Garden State Tortoise found out the hard way you have to keep him arms length from your face.

My lil Pebble 🐢 (W Hermann) acts exactly the same as Otis! Pebble has to be involved in everything I’m doing, he attacks any large objects that gets in his way and chases me around like a lil puppy. He will climb up on me for a cuddle and has fallen fast asleep all stretched out many times. I wouldn’t have him any other way I’m so fortunate to have such a social tortoise. I love it when Kenan, Tom and Chris get together and completely geek out over their shellbabies 🤗🐢🤗

@@KampKenan I always say that Pebble is how he is thanks to you! I found your channel many moons ago when you had Hermann’s and was setting up their enclosure right next to your house. I know you no longer have them but your advice was spot on, I set up his enclosures to be as naturalistic as possible and make sure he eats the foods that his species locale would eat and I made sure he is included in any/everything I’m doing. I found Chris via you two meeting up and have incorporated things he has learnt along the way too especially with Otis. Pebble also doesn’t like certain coloured objects and he loves kicking about his lil football which keeps him entertained. I love watching your channels I’m forever learning from you both to make sure Pebble has everything he needs. It’s so good to have Tom back, I bet he is happy matt doesn’t mind filming the gators as poor Tom wouldn’t enjoy getting in the gator enclosure. I have a feeling Tom maybe setting up his very own Turtle enclosure set up after seeing Chris’s set up last week😉😁 Keep doing what your doing can’t wait to see what you’re all up to next 😉🤗🐢🤗

She recognized me, became excited when I came home from work, and would look up at me while I stroked her shell, which she cleat enjoyed. I can’t imagine how animals would have survived evolution without emotion. We did have to find her a good home when I became too disabled to properly care for her and hubby was working and trying to care for me. Broke my heart.

But what I love most is tye fact that your Mexican boxes finally have behbehs! Man of man, what I would do just to have a legally obtained group of my own, plus Yucatans. Of all the turtle species out there, boxes are just too perfect! Id love to be a part of something much bigger than myself. I'd love to have these animals to be an educator of sorts myself. It's all so exciting and very rewarding when done with love and compassion!

Yes, those rocky outcroppings, called a _kopje_ (‘copy’), are what pancake tortoises adapted to. They “wedge & inflate” incase they need to escape from predators… because some kopjes are homes for leopards or lion families. Or they’re not, but one day, big cats move in! And a soft, flexible plastron is fun for a lion cub to practice hunting on… lol. So they adapted to wedging themselves.
Here in San Diego, our zoo has an entire Kopje walkthrough exhibit, showcasing the main kopje dwelling species: the klipspringer (antelope), pancake tortoise, dwarf mongoose, rock hyrax, and Sudan plated lizards, all of which are kept together in a large rocky exhibit. The entire thing is basically car-sized, giant granite boulders with hidden burrows in between. Not much actual ground area. Then they also have other kopje-favoring species, including four raptor species (bateleur, martial, Verreaux’s and crowned eagles), servals, and African rock pythons. It’s a great exhibit. Plus on the botanical side, they show all the amazing caudex-forming plants, like _Stephania erecta_ & _Gerrardanthus_ plus succulents like Haworthia, Aloe, Gasteria, Pachypodium, etc.

Aggression in male box turtles is very common particularly after emerging from estivation in April (up north.) It’s actually desirable to let many species interact aggressively as they would in the wild just before breeding. I’d allow both my Eastern Box and Spotteds to have at it (under supervision) before mating as it elevates their testosterone levels and stimulates their breeding response. I’ve noticed higher levels of aggression if a female of their species is present (a “show of strength?”) Also, there seems to be a direct correlation with color; the more brightly colored/patterned the male (like Otis) the more dominant/aggressive the turtle. It would be interesting if Chris could breed Otis to see if any of his offspring inherit his “curiosity” traits.
I noticed for how colorful Otis is his eyes appear to be light orange opposed to the more typical brilliant, fiery red of. male Easterns.
*Could Otis be overcompensating due to the “inferiority complex” his pale eyes have given him? In Eastern Box Turtles “eye color matters!”* 😊

I have a horsefield tortoise (or Russian tortoise for you guys in the states) who is just like Otis! If I take him out of his enclosure he will just follow me everywhere and lifts himself up and stretches his neck out as much as he can towards me, and interestingly he NEVER bites me (only my shoes) he's just interested in what I'm doing, but he will constantly try to nip at my girlfriend, so he clearly has preferences. The funny thing is that when I feed him I have to leave the room, even if he can't see me he will not eat while I'm there, he'll just scratch relentlessly against the wall of his enclosure until I pay him attention, so I can only assume he knows my scent, because I've tried just sitting quietly in the room and he still goes nuts as if he knows I'm there. I wish I fully understood why he's so obsessed with me and keen to interact, but I'm not complaining. I personally believe that it's because when we got him he was quite sick - he barely ate or moved and certainly had metabolic bone disease, his shell was pliable and he was super skinny, and I wasn't working at the time due to lockdown so I put all of my time into nursing him back to health. I hand fed him, bathed him in water treated with calcium and vitamins every day, and even gently held up his shell to help him learn how to walk properly until he was strong enough to lift it on his own, so I'm convinced that he somewhat understands that I'm the reason that he's alive and that's why he is the way he is with me.

Otis is so hyperaggressive in a focused way. It’s as if he’s permanently switched on as a breeding male fighting off competitors, something that usually lasts only a specific length of time and is better tuned to actual competitors rather than shoes, cameras, and giant bipeds. His fighting drive is stuck in the ON position, with little distinction of his “opponents.” His hormone levels could be off, or there could be a brain abnormality in structure or chemistry. He may not be normal, but he’s physically healthy, beautiful, and very well cared for.
If I were a biologist researching animal emotions and behavior, I would be interested in examining Otis’ response specificity and hormone levels. If he would stay still long enough, I would want to study XRay, MRI and CAT scans of his brain.

It reminds me of salamander tadpoles where some of them will (seemingly randomly) hatch with bigger heads and mouths and be cannibalistic and aggressive relative to others of their cohort. Obviously there is no evidence of Marge or Otis being cannibalistic but it is really weird that they are how they are. They have let go of all instinct to defend themselves. Any other box turtle would tuck into its shell and any other snapper would lean its shell towards you and hiss.

I'm going to pull a Kevin McCarlnly from NewEnglandRepitles speech on this fellow to give me some room here:
Otis is like any other famous or individually unique tortoise 🐢. He's a box turtle and there's many different personalities, habitat, slight diet variation, sexual dimorphism, hormonal changes, patterns, sizes, and textures. No two box tortoises are the same, even twins, triples, etc of the species do "slightly" variety in their own way.
Otis looks like he has some "Melanistic" or even Hyper-Melanistic qualities but he's still a healthy individual. His eyes are very pinkish like albinoism however his visual IQaty is fascinating and you are right, he was raised up at 10 years and now in your care at age 25, one third of his life cycle gone by already..
Kevin mentioned in a series of videos with Chandler, Justin, Kenan and others that all animals are "sensitive' to all wavelengths of the visual, hearing fluctuations, heightened senses of taste feeling, touching and smelling.
Otis was probably picking up visual cues 😕 from the camera the subtle clicks and gears ⚙️ within the autonomous device(yes camera are micro robots, but that's for another debate and time)
His patterns and textures are no different from Jaguars known for their individual bio-markers. Btw, Jaguars like Snow Leopards will not attack a person from the back or front they move in synch to your own movements, and demand Respect as being the Middle cat of the big cat world(they are the middle linebackers on the football, power, speed, stamina, and smart enough to cut their own looses without killing themselves for food)
There's a 15 minute video on Joe Organs podcast where the interviewer explained, about Living in the jungle or the Amazons. Jaguars will not hunt humans,at these will not and for good reason. Memory and teachings are pasted from mother to children in the Jaguar family. If their mother shows them to avoid humans they will do so. Alot of times, they will walk by you but don't try to pet them they just walking by to get their next meals(you are more dangerous to them than we are to them) and they aren't many of them left 😢
