The name of the city does not come from the wine, it comes from the comercial river Port from the Roman Empire. The name Portugal comes from the Portucalense County, and the name Portucalense comes from the conjugation of the Roman cities of Porto and Gaia. Porto and Gaia Cities date back to the Iron Age where they were 2 important trading posts with ports on both sides of the river.
Another fun fact of Porto was that the city had a crucial part to play in the Napoleonic wars, where the city fell for only one night. It's also named Invicta (Undefeated) due to a long siege in the war against D. Miguel The Absolutist, where the entire city endured the siege waiting for the arrival of D. Pedro. The entire city stood their ground agains famine and an outbreak of bubonic plague, and did not budge.
Sorry for the long rant, but I'm very proud of my city and my country.

Also, on the Gaia side you have the cellars, not the vineyards. The vineyards are in the Douro Valley, in the interior side of the country. The kegs of wine would be shipped down the river to stage in the cellars before being sold.
