OHOY! ALIBANGBANG Prior to the arrival of the Spanish conquistadores, “OHOY ! Alibangbang” was already one of the popular folksongs sang by the natives of Capiz. Its popularity could be attributed to its charmingly melancholic tune which is easy to remember. The lyrics enthuse a gentle reminder to a butterfly in flight never to forget to care face every single flower in the gardens. To forget would cause the neglected flower to drop to the ground a withered, wilted reminder of the once fresh blossom which had waited for the butterfly’s arrival in vain. Based on the lyrics, it is easy to surmise that the butterfly stands for a young swain about to score the filed in search of a prospective wife. On the other hand, the flowers symbolize the numerous girls whom the young man would possibly meet. Thus the song “Ohoy! Alibangbang” reminds the lad to know the discern every girl’s character so he will not err in his choice. If he would not search and choose well, he may fail to find the right lass for him who, ironically, is just waiting for him to come wooing. As a consequence of the tragic neglect, the right girl would loose the opportunity to love him and for felt her own chance at happiness.
