With two players you might consider playing with the following way: when you take back the played political cards, you have to permanently remove half of them (rounded down) from the game. It helps with getting the hands chock full with cards and brings an additional tactical element into the game.
Man, I gotta give it a 9. I will always play with it if I have the option. Yes, it makes it a tad more complex, but not by much. Once you get used to the new rules, it becomes just as buttery smooth as the original. That extra plane of control was a shining aspect of Rising Sun and it shines here as well.
Totally agree. While I admit, the expansion does play better at 4/5 players (I don't like playing Ankh at 3), I still love adding it to 2 player games due to the extra asymmetry and additional strategies they allow for.
Great review! While I'm a big fan of this expansion, I totally get its not for everyone - the best thing for me is that it makes the gods really matter - the standard game is great, but the gods are a minor feature in the game, in a lot of situations they're just an immune warrior. With the political cards most of them require your god to be in the region/zone to make good use of them, so it requires your god to move around the board and where your opponents god is and where they can get to is something you need to pay a lot more attention to!
Review of this review: 10/10. Informative, well-structured, concise, relevant. I had this expansion since January and still have not been able to bring it to board since I am still acclimating my non-gamer wife to playing Ankh. But with all the board games we have played Ankh is her favorite I have even made it that if we disagree on something we settle it with a game of Ankh.
I like the gameplay. However, I find it can add a lot of time to a game for AP prone players. it adds lots of extra decisions each turn for those who will review whether they should play each politics card they have on each turn ( I feel like it made our 4 player game go from 2.5 hours to 3.5).
Agree with everything Z said about the expansion. I personally love it and I'd prefer to play with it every time but it makes the game much more complex so I wouldn't use it with newbies.
the pharaoh expansion is funny. The cards it gives you access to are often just as powerful or MORE powerful than your actions in a turn and they give you access to actions you may have been cut off from on the track. I find this dilutes the game a bit.
Oof, more is more type expansions are a hard pass for me. Thanks Zee for the in-depth review. 🙌

My wife also loves Ankh! Could be because she's undefeated against me but it's still one of my favourites too.

I won’t play the game without this expansion. It’s awesome!
Thanks Zee. i enjoy Ankh a lot. Haven't used Pharaoh yet.
Ooh, I share the exact same opinion.
I love it at 2, but said I won't play it with more.... Maybe I need to re-evaluate this!
