Pastor John MacArthur gave an amazing teaching on the good Samaritan...and within this teaching, speaking on loving others as yourself...he explained how the Samaritan did not do just the bare minimum, but rather he spent money lavishly on the man whom he found injured on the road. As Pastor MacArthur put it...you would not do only the bare minimum for yourself. Instead you would seek the very best care and comfort for your own recovery. That is what the Samaritan did for the injured stranger...and so that is how we are to go and _love others as ourselves._
I have a great respect for Tolstoy as a writer. Although I really didn't discover him as a writer until my 30s. ( I grew up during the Era of communism and the USSR, and during that period I don't recall his writings really being promoted). Although I have read some of his novels, to me it is in his short stories he really shines, even though they are not what he is known for. They are really wonderful, and if you haven't read them yet, I strongly recommend them. I believe the same thing happened with Kipling, probably in my top 5 favorite writers. The works he is famous for, although they are written for children, such as the Jungle Book, do have an underlying morality to them ( like Aesops fables), but it is in his short stories he really shines, like in Plain Tales from the Hills.
