This is my own opinion as an mtg player with zero competitive play and a cry moderate following of the scene, I feel like a The One Ring solution that could've been both balanced and flavorful would have been to erata the card to say "A deck can only have one card named The One Ring." It seems like that would solve a bunch of problems. It would manually force the card out of, or at least lower within, the metagame, it would allow it to be more accessible within the player base since everyone with a playset would mostly sell them, lowering the price, it would completely eliminate its decks that play only it for card draw, it would make it a the powerful card draw artifact it was made to be without the massive workaround of playing multiple to legend rule the painful one away, and it would be so much more flavorful. Like, "Hello, I am here with all four of my ancient artifact of which there is only one in existence." I know that's the same logic for all legendary permanents, but it is literally called The ONE Ring. I know it would suck to erata such an iconic card away from how it was printed, and to do it so far into its lifespan is unprecedented, but the idea of erataing absurdly powerful cards does have precedence. Just think of Companion. The only other problem i see with it is that the erata would almost certainly never see a real print run because it's a universes beyond set, but I think it could've been done
It always begs the question on Universes Beyond/Horizons set. Maybe it’s high time for a discontinuation on Horizons sets. Universes Beyond on the other hand…..that well is drying up.
The fact the one ring is both a fog and a draw effect makes it absolutely fucking broken when you realize that draw effect is forever and it ramps. The only deck it has been not good in for me to play out of my 3 decks is the one that had doubling season. My white and black deck have used it to great results.
I'm sure it would still be broken but I gotta wonder how much more balanced it would have been if the card had been written with the burden counters going into the player instead of the permanent, or like any of the other short of method to prevent the Legend Rule shenanigans that just let you cheat the spirit and the flavor of the card. The trigger being a casting one already show there was some consideration to not let this be an easy permafog engine by letting you blink it over and over.
The One Ring was ruined for me the moment it was used to sell collector boosters. Even back in Zendikar, did they advertise it when they put Black Lotuses in packs? No. We found out about it years later, and it became the stuff of legends. Because they knew it incentivized gambling, and misleading people into spending money on a one in a billion shot was incredibly dishonest. I've always hated it. Never wanted to play with it or against it. Glad it's gone. If I see it in a deck, I lose respect for the player. The fact that it was so broken just intensifies my dislike for it, and my dislike for WotC as a company now.
That was the exact period when i took break from Magic. So i didn't just dodge bullet, i dodged a whole machine gun barrage of terrible gameplay. Glad i returned exactly when modern started healing, i enjoy my playset of Green Sun Zeniths

At the last major tournament before its banning, it was in 70% of decks - even aggro decks were running it and it can be argued quite a few of the decks NOT running it should've ideally been running it (such as the much higher winrate seen by the field of Jeskai energy decks with the ring vs. the average winrate of those without it). That is a level of ubiquity a single card is not usually allowed in Modern, and means it had a far higher rate of play than even Nadu, Fury, Grief; or even Eye of Ugin at the height of Eldrazi Winter.

Totally fine. It's a decent card, but is definitely not for every deck. Usually pops up in artifact combo decks and some slower/midrange decks
