Giggles' mechanic sounds interesting, but the token scary clown theme has been done and I think would really mesh against the themes and aesthetic of DD. Clocktower sounds fantastic, though, as does Gallows Tree- I never felt that the Weald got enough characterization in the DD atmosphere. It basically breaks down like:
Warrens- where the Ancestor discarded his demonic experiments after practicing summoning, which formed its own grotesque mockery of a culture.
Cove- Where the fishmen moved in as the Ancestor traded with them in secret to gain the occult artifacts and dirty funds to fuel his dark ambitions.
Ruins- Where the Ancestor practiced necromancy on his hapless murdered guests, creating an unstoppable cycle of death begetting death and reanimating their victims.
Weald- just sort of where everything else happens. Townsfolk getting rowdy, it has brigands for hire; need more ingredients for doing crazy stuff, forest got corrupted, now has witches. The Ancestor's connection to the Weald seems kind of thin compared to the other places, which just feels like a missed opportunity for an entire evil forest.
Yeah, the original idea was a boss that was somehow related to the jester, but that was later changed into him having his own backstory away from the jester when thinking of the story and aesthetic. My main priority when making the boss was concept>story>aesthetic. Because we were told the most important part was the concept itself.
I totally respect your opinion though, just throwing in a bit of my point of view :)
I really like the sounds of the Clocktower and the gallowtree!
Many of these, eh. Not eldritch/lovecraftian enough. The Clocktower seems interesting though.
The hallow tree I feel fits with the story though, given a lot of the creatures/ bosses we fight are either eldritch or Human fuckery ( like our ancestors shit)
I mean to be honest I don’t think they had enough time to conceptualize an proper eldritch horror, let alone get concept art for it and all new mechanics. I think they look fun all the same.
Cremator was based on Cthugha from Lovecraft Mythos.a being of fire that at times stops eldritch horrors and other times bring ruin to the world
The 3 pirates sisters are good too, they represent the lesser level of corruption in the dungeon, "just" being in contact with eldrich entities like the watcher, and not becoming one of them
Cremator and Mr. Giggles both sound amazing and I love the mechanics of the Slaver. A great video to represent great work from the community!
Giggle and tower sounds very interesting. The others, while very rich and original in lore, are too similar to already existing bosses' mechanics imo.
I think the tower is easily both the most thematically cohesive and appropriate submission, but also the most unique idea mechanically.
Woo- My Asylum Warden got into the Top 10. With all the outlandish and eccentric bosses submitted, mine seems the most passive.
The fully detailed Google documents on each of the bosses can be found in the discord server linked in the video description.
It should be in the contest section, specifically the contest submissions.
These top 10 have been pinned in the contest submission channel for easy access ^^
I wish I knew about this prior...I would have entered with a boss I've been working on :(
The Gallows Tree is a mod on the Steam Workshop for Darkest Dungeon, part of the "Here be Monsters" mod. It centers around marking a hero, then grabbing and choking them with a noose for damage and stress, as well as blighting the party with poisonous tree sap.
I had written up an idea for this contest but i got too busy to go through with it unfortunately. Was thinking of an artorias inspired boss of a estate general or knight who is half eldritch corrupt for trying to oppose the ancestor and will have mechanics where if you healed enough stress youd inspire him to fight back the evil inside him which could trigger him to lash out at adds at his side or stun himself to allow you some advantage.
There were some really interesting finalists among this batch! Mr. Giggles immediately caught my eye due to the uniqueness that he brings to the game through his various mechanics. If the modder team can figure out how to bring justice to the creator’s idea then I think Mr. Giggles could definitely fill the place of an absolutely insane boss.
The other bosses of note, in order of significance to me, were The Cremator, The Clocktower, The Slave Trader and the Asylum Warden. Best of luck to every contestant, I could honestly see any of them having a mod made after their work!
I am glad you liked the Cremator, I thought of the boss from the inspiration from the backstory comics. How all of the Religous Heroes had a difficult upbringing in the sole thing that keeps the dark at bay. I also took inspiration from Cthugha as in the Mythos, it was one of the enemies of the old ones which resonates with this boss as despite being a force of the Light, it is opposed to the party and especially those who draw their power from the Dark.
MrAsaqe Hey man, I’m going to assume that you’re likely MakiMakiMa from the video. Glad to hear from one of the creators! The Cremator was definitely one of the greatest submission and, without a doubt, was *the* greatest Eldritch-themed boss submitted, in my honest opinion. It’s nice to get more info on the submission pieces, as it gives us listeners much more insight on the creator’s thought process throughout the making of the work, allowing us to have a much greater appreciation.
Good luck with the finals!

Well it is up to the power of democracy now. But some of the finer details is the boss does a lot of damage to backliners (which synergizes with the damage boost it gets from fighting Arcaneum classes ) while debuffing strong frontline heroes with accuracy and dodge debuffs
Clock tower and the hanging tree seem awesome
Are these going to be incorporated into the next version of the game? Oh, I hope so ... 💗
You absolute mad lads.
All of these sound really cool and complex! Hard to decide on who to vote for. It'd be nice if you could link the documents with the bosses fully detailed.
man i could have suggest a boss. But its late so.. :(
My idea revolves on the yithians. They are an eldritch creature that you shouldn't kill. If you let them get away, you will unlock a hidden quest that points out the location of these creatures. However, this is not a rematch. You'll be fighting their _predators_ instead. If completed, well, you'll be awarded with some unique and decent trinkets and some interesting note or letters for some lore.
Suprised mr. Giggles is on the list
That shit sounded stupid as hell
Could you link the boss entries please it sounds pretty cool
Sorry, Shakiel!
I would have loved to do this, and even tried, but not all the submissions were in the same format and it was ultimately much easier to just allow people to read them in the Discord. :|
Great classes and great contest! Sadly i found out it to late for participation. Well, hope you guys will made something like hero contest in the future.
Some really great ideas here!
Damn if I was here earlier I would’ve submitted a boss whose backstory is that they were another member of your family who was sent long ago to restore the hamlet but they ultimately failed, losing their sanity to the dungeon where they rest with their last two heroes
Is this contest going to be held in the future? I missed out on this one.
Oo~ why haven't I checked this put sooner? I love a good ol' boss fight.
What a great way to end my long campaign, I just got done with my first Darkest Dungeon run! It only took.... 586 weeks. Yeah, the campaign was long but victory came.
These are great though, and all sound interesting :o
SPOILER (kinda)
The Clock Tower's ability (when aligned) is like the final boss's ability (when reduced to a certain amount of HP).
Come unto your maker is intended to always happen exactly twice throughout a fight with The Heart, The bell tolls is slightly weaker by itself and can theoretically happen any number of times if you really mess up interupting their positioning
I was talking about how they both kill/reduce to death's door a hero, not that.
MrGiggles sounds amazing
I’ve been excited to see this
All of these bosses sound great. From their designs to their backstories. It all makes me wish I remembered to submit my own. Sorry Earth Wind and Fire... maybe you’ll get a second chance.
After finding this imsad because I found your channel in 2018 but never saw this video or event
Sorry, Justin!
We will be launching another contest in the near future! The Discord would be the easiest way to follow along if you're not already a member. :)

My summaries in the video did no justice to the actual writing, mechanics and detail of the actual submissions in the video. :)
We were so thrilled to read through all 44 submissions in this contest, each with many interesting, fun, and creative ideas!
I highly recommend checking out the details of each on your own!
Where did you got that nun pic?
Could you at least have the google doc link in the description?
Shame only about 2 or 3 of the top ten actually were made, real shame, or maybe others were made and I’m just not finding them
