The West really was this brutal. There were Indian tribes that practiced cannibalism, during the colonial period as well as the Westward expansion. It just isn't spoken about because it's not politically correct, and runs counter to the prevailing narrative. Some reviewers have called this movie racist. It's not. It's courageous for unflinchingly depicting how dark and brutal the West could be.
After the Battle of the Little Big Horn (Greasy Grass), the Sioux women dismembered the dead cavalrymen, to disable them in the afterlife.
It was also common for some tribes to eat the hearts of their vanquished enemies.

If you like a slow build and want "the ultimate dread-inducing experience" you should consider doing "Come And See" it's been dubbed the "scariest movie ever made" by many and was what inspired Steven Spielberg when making Saving Private Ryan to get that "realistic" feel he borrowed heavily from it and screened it to the cast of Schindler's list before filming too, it's often called the greatest war movie of all time.
It does take over an hour to build but when it does finally hit it's crescendo of horror, it'll make Bone Tomahawk seem like a calm summer breeze. It's also a recreation of real events based on eye witness accounts so it's deeply sickening.

Kurt Russell also plays this so well. One of his better movies, he's not quite as good as he was in Death-Proof but that's just down to the directors. Tarantino will always get the best performance, and that's in no way a bad thing... I love that line he says, "what are you doing in my breakfast?".

Forgot how squelchy those sound effects are.
Crazy ass film. Dragged Across Concrete is ok. Watchable but doesn't have that bite his first two have. S Craig Zahler also wrote the new Puppet Master movie, so there ya go ya know.

I think the horror aspect increases when the story is based on, or parallel to, a true story. This could be a reference to anything from the cannibalistic tribes hidden in national parks theory. To Portlock Alaska lore. To Lovelock Cave and the tribe of giants that were trapped and killed by the Ute tribes.

What an incredible first film by Zahler, such a distinct and powerful style present on such a low budget. Plus the acting, holy smokes was that some of the best performances by each of these actors, especially Matthew Fox. Easily the best he’s ever done

I can't re-watch that scene...Never again! And there I thought, naively, that the fate of the Viper in GoT was repulsive! Silly me...

  • @lienstone8019

I was kind of shocked they didn't mercy kill the two females on the way out. That fate was horrifying and put it all in perspective why Mrs. O'Dwyer went silent for a few moments when recounting the clan knowing that could be her.

I had never heard of this movie. It is on Netflix and I just thought it was a Western. I was SO very wrong. I do watch a lot of horror movies but I know the genre going into it. I also watch more supernatural horror than gore. I just dismissed it as normal human violence and the talk as just over exaggerated talk about a particularly nasty tribe. Not some Orc MFs coming in there and doing all of the stuff they definitely did. So, now I'm sitting here disturbed AF at that surprise at 3 a.m. Whoops.

    Underrated movie.
Basically “The 13th Warrior” as a Western instead of an historical adventure

This is the closest thing we’ve gotten so far to a Blood Meridian movie. Supposedly they’re trying again to make one so that movie may overtake this as most brutal western.
If you’ve never read BM and you enjoy this or dark westerns in general then it’s a must read and I cannot overstate it’s stature and representation in the genre. It’s up there with Moby Dick and Huckleberry Finn in competition for the great American novel

The Invitation (2015) with Logan Marshall Green in the main lead is also a really good slow burn, that really made me question the protagonist.
I heavily suggest giving it a watch.
The director Karyn Kusama also made the cult classic Jennifer's Body.

Has anyone urged you to watch Hereditary? Since I'm on disability and almost a shut-in, I can't afford to be a patron, so I can't participate in polls. But I urge you to put Hereditary in a poll, along with Deliverance and maybe Tucker and Dale vs. Evil and Cabin in the Woods. Thx.

'''why are you in my breakfast'' . Really shows how they saw the word breakfast more as an activity word (breaking the night-time fast) so he is saying 'why are you in my breaking of my fast'' . Wouldn't hear it used like that anymore really.

If you like western type movies may I suggest 1994 maverick with Mel Gibson. It has some of my favorite witty dialogue in any movie. Plus james garner and Jodie foster. It’s a must see it once! Thank you 🙏 keep up the awesome commentary

Patrick Wilson is what I'd call an underutilized actor. He's super talented but I think a lot of the roles he takes he's not utilized properly by directors. Adam Driver is the same way. He's such a poor character in Star Wars but then I saw him in Logan Lucky and was amazed at how good he can be when directed properly.
