Beijinos e abraços,
Carissa, Iwan, Frankie & Albi
Our Story:
We are Carissa, Iwan & Frankie the sausage dog, and in 2020 decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month we were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call home. We picked up Albi, Joao and Simao the cats along the way, as well as Diogo the podengo and a flock of chickens.
Subscribe to follow our project as we turn an old stone barn into our home, and learn the ropes of looking after a piece of land to make an abundant garden and one day, our very own winery.
I must applaud the editor who includes the swing tunes at each brush cutting interlude! I suspect that it may be before your time, being the bright young things that you are, but there was a show on that television back in the day called 'The Good Life'... If you aren't consciously referencing that show, then, if anyone should ever ask, just say that you are. Trust me - it's a beautiful thing!👍🥂
Thank you! We love a bit of jazz! I’ll check out that tv show!
Pipoca is a really cute name, love it.
Karissa, gloves when gardening, don't forget the bites of scorpions
Another beautiful episode. We all look forward to seeing you each week working on your lovely property and building new things. Your videos bring a huge sense of peace and tranquility. I’m sure everyone feels the same. Don’t stop! 😊
I’ve noticed how Diago is taking over from Sausage, in following you around. You’re your his saviours, so I can’t see it happening anytime soon soon, in him not covering your tails! lol, he’s gorgeous, they all are. ❤️❤️
One fruit tree I've really been impressed with is a Kumquat, my parents normally give me loads and I had never seen them on the plants until recently, they are absolutely amazing with how much fruit you get from one plant. 👍
I very much love your calm, and lengthy videos. Your flowers and the animals, especially Diogo are fun to watch. Your videos bring me peace- thank you
Iwan and Carissa, I just love your channel. It keeps me sane in this crazy world. I have been unwell recently and so have been relaxing every day watching your videos. Thank you for the amazing content. Fantastic. ❤
You not only are accompanied by four cats and two dogs, but with a little Totoro as well. Love it! ❤
Well spotted! ❤️
Greetings from my little Totoro! 😊
You are both great to watch and I admire your bravery and hard work. I love the dogs, cats and chickens. Brilliant channel. ❤
Pergola looks lovely! 👍😊 Thank you for your garden tips! I love the Bossa Nova music you played! Sweet Frankie is looking after adorable Pipoca 😻. Such a delight to see your veggie garden with a sprinkler and curious Joao, Simao, Diogo😊!
The pergola is going to be great to cool the car down a bit for you, nothing worst on a very hot day than getting into a car that is burning hot. Really looking forward to the cabin build. Hope Albi's foot is okay x
Thank you for sharing your daily chores with us💚💗 I enjoy the peace and quiet with all those bird sounds! Goodluck with your vegetable gardens , so nice to have flowers mingled in.
You make it seem someone like me 71 years old can do things we never thought we could! ❤ I will try!
I love it when all the pets come and look at what you are up to. Are you going to secure the uprights of the pergola in the ground otherwise it might blow away in a strong wind.
When I plant tomato plants I dig the hole and I put in a tablespoon of Epsom salt then cover it with soil , then I take off all the limb except for the top 3 , then I plant it. Sometimes if I have the room I will put the tomato plant in the hole and then lay the plant down sideways and cover the stem up with soil all but the top 3 limbs. This way gives it more of a root system. I have also had good harvest planting tomatoes upside down in 5 gallon buckets . Take a 5-gal. bucket and drill some small holes in the lower sides, the bottom with 1 larger hole in the middle of the bottom of the bucket about the size of a 1/4 cup round. Then you take a sponge and cut it half way , then side the sponge on the tomato plant around the base of the tomato plant and then stick it in the bottom of bucket . Tomato plant should be upside down sticking out of the bottom of the bucket. Then fill the bucket with soil. You can then plant marigolds and other vegetables in the top of the bucket. Then hang buckets up high off the ground . Planting this way also makes you have less insects getting on the tomato plants.
Hard at work in the heat. Bless you both. The land is wild and alive.
Henceforth I will think of the kitten as Popcorn Larry, which sounds a bit like a gunslinger in the Wild West. I love watching the way your animal family follows you around as you’re working. It looks like you’re leading a parade of dogs and cats along the pathways in the gardens.
Couch grass is the devil's grass 😢 years of battling it and it really is a manual task. Ideally using chickens to dig it up would be good. If you ever move veg patch moving it to where the chickens are might be a good option. Here in Australia we often use woodchip paths as what you call water batteries. They are also good when broken down to dig from path to bed as compost, then just refilling path with new chips. Its a common permaculture process.
Tomato and leek, good companion plants ❤
Love watching all the jobs
Beautiful, serene and marvellous to see the progress as always. Thanks for helping Nick and Andrea this week. Have a great week😊
Another lovely video ❤
Dead head your roses, and they will produce more blooms.
When you were strimming, one tip coming from another YT. Gather up all the strimmed stuff/ weeds/ brambles etc and strim again. Makes a much smaller pile and easier to handle 😊
The kitten is SO cute❤ I hope Albi is ok.
Wow …..so wonderful to hear the birds chirping in the background as you go about your chores ….such a beautiful calming video ❤❤❤
What an awesome kit, that was fast. Done slightly more permanent it could serve as a base for a room. 👍
My perfect Sunday afternoon 'bliss episode'. Restful, birds singing, cats and dogs stroking, chickens clucking, planting the garden for future eats. Beautiful garden areas you guys have engineered for yourselves, envy-provoking life-style. If I may offer a well-meant comment? Please wear gloves when pushing the bamboo into the ground - you only need a tiny sliver of bamboo to break off and you will force it through your hand, the results of which could be awful. Keep safe guys and thank you for taking so much time and trouble in editing and uploading.
My favourite Saturday place of peace and tranquility…Another beautiful vlog from you guys. The sights and sounds are so soothing, and the lovely calm way you interact and work together is inspiring. Things are looking pretty hot and dry- I hope you get a good rain to cool things down. Have you settled on a name for your precious new kitten? I hope Albee recovers quickly from the foot injury. Thank you for sharing your life with us. ❤️🇨🇦
I planted an agave just like that in 1987, the year we moved to our farm, and it grew taller than two meters. It finally grew a stalk of about twenty meters plus in 2020 and flowered, producing about fifty new plants before dying. It was the first thing I planted here. 👍❤
The cardboard / mulch paths is great idea and as it builds up you will really see the benefits xx
I like the new spot you chose for your bedroom, it's going to feel very different when it's done.
It's nice to see a picture before and after you "strim" and clear weeds or build/change anything
Lovely video, and it's great to see how things are coming on. The pergola/carport is a great idea - and I'm SO looking forward to seeing the next stages of building your new cabin!!
You just need to add basil to the onion and tomatoe bed and it would be a one stop shop for my favourite salad.❤
Pipoca is a great name! ❤ I'm really interested in how the irrigation works, I hope there won't be any issues with fungus due to the leaves getting wet. 🤞 I dust all my plants with copper and sulfur dust, it's organic and deters pests and fungal infections.
I know summer can be hard with everything being dry. Maybe a rock garden with lots of succulents would look great in front of your stone wall with the agave? Minimal watering 🌿
PS thank you for another calming Sunday afternoon break 🙏
Thank you and stay cool lovely people.🤗
Loved the U shape garden now equipped with a sprinkler system!! I expect full on harvests from now on!! LOL!!
I think it also promotes earthworms, it will definitely hold water longer. Going to be interesting, great trying out different ways yourself.👍
😬 Looks like the bee likes to live dangerously lol.
I think the cardboard is going to make a huge difference in how much weeding you'll have to do. Looking forward to seeing how it works.
Gosh, you are brave clearing out those garden beds without gloves on!
Loving the music combos ❤ banjo and bossa nova😁
Another lovely video..
Sending love🐨🐨
Your pergola needs to be anchored to the ground and the wood treated.. Clarissa, love your strength and problem solving ❤😊
It’s not moveable if it’s stuck to the ground? The wood is already treated.
@@FrankieOffGrid use metal stakes that can be removed, I’m afraid a storm will blow it away, just a suggestion from experience
We don’t get storms here that can do that..
I have been watching for months now just to find out Johan is actually Iwan
😂😂😂
Sorry Iwan!
You guys are working so hard!
The place looks amazing!
❤
Haha no worries at all! It’s a Welsh spelling
Your flowers, garden and pets are so lovely. Great video, as always.
Lovely video as always❤ Did you concrete in the posts for the car pergola? I may have missed it! Don't want the great structure blowing away! Plus does that limit your driveway deliveries? Gardens looking good, I love those sprinklers! So freshens the air, and cools things down! We used to run through them as children in the summer❤ 61 now but still use them here for dry spots! Kitten playtime was so cute❤ Have a lovely week you two! Thank you for sharing!
I'm definitely going to have to try the oat straw tea when ours is ready, our winter just started. I normally use chamomile tea to wind down at night.👍
Hi Carissa and Iwan, this is so awesome to see what you achieve on the farm. Hard work but it is worth it. I enjoy the sounds of the birds and your music. See you next Sunday again. Keep save and healthy. Regards Joey Walvis Bay Namibia. ❤❤
Fabulous video once again , so therapeutic .
I also have grown watermelon, cantaloupe under the trees. You can grow put wire to keep out rabbits! Please invest in some boots for the snake and bugs
Good idea with pergola - just one thing, what if you need a delivery of materials and the truck/van is too tall to fit under the pergola?
Yeah I was just thinking that. Or some van friends came to stay...? I'd have put it off to the side in front of the wood shed.
Quick work made of that!! I was expecting the cloth to be alternated over and under the roof joists. Great little kit! Your channel has the best sounds of nature. Have a great week.
Love you both 👍👍
I think you need to build a pool that you can cool down in 😉 The carport looks good and went up really quickly. Everything is looking lovely. Hope you get some rain soon to make working outside more comfortable. 🐈⬛ Have lots of fun with your new baby. 😊
Gorgeous, calming video as always:) That pergola car port is awesome- all of what you’re building lately is inspiring us to try too!
Thanks for the shout out too:) You’re the best! Looking forward to sipping on some oatstraw together in the, hopefully near, future!
Love youuu❤
Maybe you could look into green fertiliser, I think that's what it's called. You place your grass and plant leaves etc into a barrel of water and let it compost down for a good while keeping the water topped up and use it for liquid fertiliser. It may help?? Hugs :)
Nothing worse than getting to your car and melting when you get in. I have a rubber strip above the windscreen of my car that has shrank by at least an inch already in the sun. Hopefully your car has ac. 👍
Always my Saturday morning Coffee time with the Foggyfarm. I need to get ouside now to water my 70 trees, was 90F yesterday in Idaho. So watering early is just like Portugal... a Necessity LoL 👍👍. Be blessed you all. Oh and i have shade set up on the south and west sides of my camper i live in, to keep the heat down. You can get a 16 mil White Tarp to throw over the carport in summer. They last a lit longer and white reflects well in Hit weather.
Your episodes make me so happy ❤
Well done for all your hard work and creativity. You are such a good example to other young people. Stick to your ideas and plans, you know what you're doing ❤ greetings from sunny, sweltering southern italy
I love this channel because everything is not PERFECT!❤
Another amazing trip to central Portugal. I just love seeing the morning starts with all the animals coming awake and starting their day. Thankyou.
Love your nice peaceful content ❤😊
Just watched from the side of loch tummel in the veedub T5. What a great vlog and truly soul calming. Shine on beautiful hoomans 💚🤙
Yes, these two giant slim humans are both 7 feet tall! 🙂
Is that true?
Homestead looking good and great work on the pergola!
Thanks Cindy! Hope you’re well!!
IMHO, you really need to install drip hoses in your raised beds. Sprinklers waste a huge amount of water - not only by watering areas with no veggies, but also in evaporation of the airborne droplets.
Drip hoses don’t work with well water unfortunately.
@@FrankieOffGrid Bummer!
Use your garlic scapes in scones with peppers and cheese- yummy. Or in omelets. Enjoy them… put some in oil taste great!
Great garden
Thanks for the AeroPress demonstration. Ordered the XL one afterwards. The code worked here in Canada and my press arrived quickly. Enjoying the coffee. It won't replace our Chemex system, but will be used instead of it for specific coffee times during the day and while we are traveling.
Exactly the same here! It’s a great system and definitely easier to transport than the chemex!
Is it worth everytime you go shopping to ask if they have any cardboard you can have as alot will just go in the bin reuse recycle maybe ? 😊
Check out soaker hoses for each bed. Direction water with less waste. Put them down after planting and before mulching. Also check you local stores to collect cardboard for free. Luckily I have a farmer husband and get paper seed bags by the hundreds but also collect cardboard boxes. The best are from the paint store. They are stronger/thicker.
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love and bless you guys, good work 👍😁, the car shade need some better hankering to the ground with a storm it's going to fall over.
Thanks Arjan! Hope you’re well! No storms here this time of year so we’re all good! It’s just for shade during the summer
You get use to the heat I still work in the mid thirty’s out side just steady and drink fluids you got to toughen people
Or just get up earlier and not work in the sun ey? 😅
@@FrankieOffGrid we start early in Australia sun is starting to rise at 5 .00 am in West Australia and if you work in the building industry or work outdoors that what you do .
Exactly!
Hard work is paying off. Can you guys grow peaches, cherries. Lemon, grapefruit, oranges, plums, walnuts, pecans, and apples I live in Arizona, but before that California. I would plant those and then you can grow squash, pumpkin and both would be watered at the same time. If I wasn’t on social security I would love to help you guys out to build your homestead. Good luck get some trees, for an orchard. I have seen them under $20.00 at end of spring. Also you can plant with a drip irrigation or underground soaking hose. My heart is with you.
We are in Southwest Türkiye, and the temps suddenly shot up to the 30s too! I am now trying to go to bed by 9.30 and wake up by 6.30 to get out in the garden. Has to be early morning and after sunset to be bearable! My car was 47C yesterday and I couldn’t touch the steering wheel! Now keep a Turkish towel in the car to cover dashboard when I park somewhere!
clarissa did you find a name for the tortoishell kitty ? since your have a love for gardening Flor is potaguise for flower or the french version is fleaur. i was looking up the egyption onions to see if i can get some and i discovered (hewen will like this) they are also known as welsh onions in some plces
Good day Iwan and Carrisa, have a good weekend ,also very hot here in Greece😊😊😊😊.🇬🇷 🇬🇷
Just START!❤
I am enjoying watching your life in Portugal , thank you to share this with us and take us to a beautiful place.
We put up the same pergola here in our garden last summer. We love it. Easy to install and looks great. I can imagine it would be perfect to put your car under.
What is the beautiful yellow flower growing in your garden? It's lovely! If you run the oat grass thru the chipper it might get rid of some of the seeds and also make it easier to handle as well as break down. I love your video's keep them coming!!! Blessings and good health to you all!
As always, just lovely!
I love seeing your progress, thanks for sharing. I like using bark chips as this breaks down well.
There was a nice view of your property at about 36 minutes. Enjoyed watching you get things done!
Another great insight into your way of life. Glad the Makita drill still working well.
Thanks Andy! It’s still going super strong! Hope you’re well!
All good here thanks(apart from the weather).
House renovations keeping me busy
Yep you are both getting better at videos and content (less silent periods) looking forward to summer and the growth of your Chanel! have to say some pets look like there owners i sure you know what i mean he! he! that one shot was so good (followers comment) your love and kindness for your pets so strong - getting cold now here in NZ bo ho.
It's quite cold in London.
Beautiful visuals.Good luck with the vegetables watering sistem❤
great video guys, love to see how you two work together. its so peaceful over there, far away from the big city's
Yay. 🎉 carport! And how’s a truck going to get onto your property? Is there another way to drive in?
We have two other entrances.. and it’s moveable
Great music. Thank you.
How big the cabin is gonna be ?
Lovely video as per usual x ❤❤❤❤
Your gardens and trees look so healthy.
Thank you for another calming video to watch. I feel so great after finding your channel as I have been looking for something like this since updates from LiZiqi stopped.
I love nature and I love watching folks work on the land as I myself coudl not afford one.
Where you have put your pergola may give you n issue with delivery being made to you as it will restrict height as well it doesn’t look very stable especially in storms , shade cloth could be put on a lot better it looks very happy hazard up to yous at the end of the day .
What’s wrong with the other entrance for deliveries?
The pergola is movable.. so it won’t live there in winter, it also won’t need shade cloth in winter 😉
Wood chips over cardboard in pathways work well for me. Have you tried that?
You are so lovely, try to cut the grass before it self seeds. It’ll save on the weeding… card bird is a good idea… what about the wood chipping you make from your trees? All the best
I get free cardboard from my local bike store. They are best sizes, although it takes me a long time to take of all the tape indeed.
Wonderful to see Frankie babysitting the kitty ❤❤❤
Well done you two, raised beds are the way to go,less weeds! Your getting there!
Put a wet long sleeve shirt on, it has to be soaking wet and will work extremely well to keeping you cool so you can work longer in extreme heat. I’ve done it and it works
