I believe I had one of those burgers in Milwaukee back in the day, i.e. 1964. Never forgot how good it was and never have had one since that was as good. Hopefully, I will get back there somebody to enjoy another one. Wisconsin has great food. My family had a cottage on Shawano Lake years ago. Many fond memories.
I just reproduced the Solle's butter burger for my family. I tripled your recipe for the stewed onions and found that it was enough to dress 10, 1/3 lb burgers. Also, beer poured straight from the bottle is a very convenient and effective way to steam the cheese.
I live in an apartment in China so i am just watching your burger videos as i can't bbq at home. But when back to Cali i am gonna make and eat hamburger 3 times a day (at least). This will be one of my first burgers that i will make.
I live in Wisconsin and Sols butter burger is to die for. I went their last year with friends and they will ask you how much butter do you want in your butter burger. I had the original and man did it taste great. As you said it's the onions and butter.
Thank you so much. I've been going to Sally's since the 60's when my parents for took me there. I really doubt they ever used wine in their onions but they are the best stewed onions I've ever had.
I grew up in Milwaukee. Going to Solly's downtown was a very special treat. We did have Heinemann's on Silver Spring out in the 'burbs which served a great butter burger (there was no other kind) in a plastic basket nested in crispy fries. I only had the Solly's hamburger when there. The butter melted right on top of the burger. Fantastic! Thanks for the memory.

Another burger that is just as Wisconsin as the butterburger is a "Pete's" burger from Prairie du Chien- they've been in business now for over 100 years. And it's just a burger cooked on a bed of steamed onions. For beer- ya gotta have a New Glarus Spotted Cow.....but its' only sold in Wisconsin, lol.

I picked up a ballistic griddle for my Weber Summit and the thing is amazing. I had 6 patties on it last weekend and then ran a bunch of red onions while the burgers rested. The local Whole Foods sells a patty that's a blend of Brisket, Short Ribs, and Ribeye and they are insane. I think it's available around the country and not just here in Colorado but it's my go to, with some butter lettuce, fresh tomato, red onion, mayo, and a nice mild cheddar on their Brioche bun. I have been eating at sollys since 1955. The cheese berger with the onions and all that butter is still the same. Berger, fries, and the traditional chocolate malt from sollys you need to be there. It's an experience.
I live in Arizona so the only butter burger I have ever had came from Culver's which I am sure doesn't compare to Solly's if they are actually the original creator of the "Butter Burger ". Been to Solly's grill and had their butter burgers I owned the Aftersix newspaper and entertainment guide out of Green Bay,WI. I covered everything in Wisconsin as far as food and entertainment bars and music and musicians and I Love the food and people of Wisconsin you did a good job but I Know there is nothing like a real Solly's butter burger . Also , should mention I had Butter burgers from a bunch of places in Wisconsin and it is absolutely got to have butter dripping out of the Burger and bun without a doubt . Peace . WTF you've never had a Solly's butter burger oh man you have no clue then . Hope you have by now .
It must really suck to live in states where clearly no one knows what a patty melt even is. A patty melt has caramelized onions, not stewed onions. A patty melt comes on sliced rye bread, not a bun. A patty melt has an oblong-shaped patty to fit the rye bread. A patty melt uses swiss cheese, not american. A patty melt is topped with thousand island dressing. This is NOTHING like a patty melt at all. lol
Ive had a lot of patty melts in my day and none of them were anything like what you think is a patty melt . Love how you seem to think you know what a patty melt MUST have.. Edit for a stupid typo ..
You've had a lot of burgers in your day, and clearly none of them were patty melts. Hell, you don't even know the proper way to spell it (hint... it's not paddy melt), so I don't know why anyone would realistically expect you to know how one is properly prepared, Shawn.
In 1960 we would run to Solley's during high school lunch, chow down on a burger and shake and run back to school in time for next class. Never gained any weight because we ran it off when young. They have since moved but I will stop for a burger once a year as remembrance of high school days long ago.
Nice job. Good ol' fashioned Milwaukee style. Lots of dairy, no hot stuff, really simple seasoning. Looks like others have pointed out that Leinenkugel's is locally pronounced with an English long-i sound. But after a couple of liters, they're just called "Leinie's" (line-ease: slurred, not shaken).
WOW. so awesome. Hamburger America is my favorite food documentary, and George Motz show that was on the Travel channel (I think that was the channel) was insane. Did you get an induction stove top or electric burner? I think that's much better rather than back to the camera at the stove...... great stuff !
Ah yum I remember the stockyards butter burger like you did it yesterday , this looks tasty Greg!! Got to be in the top 5 messy burgers category but oh so good!
Nice video. I was headed to Solly’s this evening to try a butter burger. It is Sunday and they closed at 4:00 pm. Bummer. Glad I discovered that before driving all the way there. I’ll give them a try later this week…. So tonight, I’m using this video to make my own Butter Burger. Thanks.
I grew up eating at Solly's. You nailed the clarified butter. Your butter looked a little thicker, and bigger, they are seriously the size of Mc Donalds Cheeseburger. Too many onions, (but necessary). You didn't use enough butter, it's at least 2 tablespoons per burger. Great job, preach the word! Sidenote: I once saw a woman eat 10 of them. If I eat two I need a nap.
I used your recipe as a guide to my own Butter Burger, Yesterday, except I liberally added Maggi Seasoning, to the stewed onions. (I buy Maggi from Amazon.com) I thought it was perfect then, but today I added Steak Sauce, to the stewed onions, and reheated them. OMG! It is now ideal. The only other major change I made, from your recipe, is I used Vermont Butter, salted, and Cabot Vermont Sharp Cheddar Cheese. I was hoping to use Extra Sharp or Hunter, but they were sold out.

Maybe they use unsalted because it's healthier for you? Lol 🤪
I just made one and this burger is awesome! I used a buffalo burger and chicken broth in the stewed onions. I am going to eat many more of these. we don't think anything about eating mayo on our burgers so whats the difference? if you've ever eaten a fast food burger, large fry, movie popcorn, macaroni and cheese ect... you've eaten way worse. butter is not the enemy. I love this burger. thank you for sharing.
Living in the Milwaukee area I've been to Solly's! I think you put just a tad too much butter on the buns but other than that it looks spot on. 👍
Watching the videos I was thinking I didn't put enough on!
Brian Kaminski
its common by chefs to put this much butter on. it will melt into burger to other side. last week I grilled out and I only put 1 tablespoon and it wasn't enough.
False. He put on abut half the amount Solly's puts on their burgers.
Hi Ballistic BBQ, good episode, I don’t know if someone mentioned it yet, but the leinenkugel you opened up is pronounced, phonetically, (Line-in -kugel.) the last pronunciation of kugel was accurate. Anyways, at least from my part of WI it is, Cheers!
No he didn't add enough butter lol
Your burger episodes are the best ones.
Wadda Burger!!... butter, beef & onyun, can't go wrong with that one :)
True Dat!
How does this man not have more subscribers? Amazing!
Greg - It's not lEEn-in-Koogle, it's LINE-EN-Koogle. (as in fishing line). Let's go have some Liney's, eh? I grew up in Wisconsin and Illinois ;) thanks for the vidjayo.
Ope, this guys an up nort 'Sconnie.
I saw a butter burger on Americas's Test Kitchen last week. I will have to try this on my Ballistic Griddle. Awesome video!
It's really good Scott!
Buy a high quality butter.
Never skimp on the quality of butter, beer or wine. Thanks VOM!
Kelly's Grass Fed is some REAL GOOD STUFF !
@@mowdoc6792 nah, it's great, butt... Bretel french butter is the best in the world!
In my family we've always had crappy butter, I will be the one to break the chains of tradition, and buy good butter!
@@BallisticBBQ Or cheese?
I’ve never had a butter burger🍔 before. However, after watching this mouthwatering display, I’ve decided to make this juicy burger🍔 and taste what I believe will be an explosive blend of flavors! Thank you for sharing my friend!🙏
Ahhhhhh, butter burger... but no Wisconsin cheddar?FYI, I'm born and raised Milwaukeean, and it's "Line-en-koo-gul," or "Liney" for short.
@@Wilsycat American cheese is processed garbage. Get a real cheddar cheese.
Yess the summer shady
Wonderfull, I can see why this burger is a favorite for middle aged and older people. Very easy to chew and digest. cholesterol off the charts though. that's why you only eat on Sunday afternoon when you get old. lol I'm so trying this. this week.
Wow. That. Is. Amazing! I'm a cheeseburger fiend😂😂😊❤️🇺🇸Thank you for this great video
Love the butter puddle magic music. Must be delicious tasting, a sporadic treat if you want to, you know, preserve a heartbeat... :). And hey, you found the knobby bowl too I see! My request is for more Tuxy video-bomb walk-bys. Seriously, anything you offer is welcome.
If it is possible, can you do a copycat FatBurger. I love those. The one that was closest to me, in my Canadian city doesn't seem to be there anymore.
FatBurger is on my list. Thank you Dwayne!
Sup Greg, had leftover grind and made this for lunch, was incredible, will have occasionally, always wanted to since saw this, glad I did👍, tyvm tc 🍔
That burger looks absolutely amazing!! Melt in ur mouth bliss !! 👨🍳
NO ONE uses olive oil to cook onions for a BUTTER BURGER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Shut ur pie hole
Thanks Greg great job as usual. I really like the wide variety of burgers. It gives me plenty of ideas on how to jazz them up at home.
that's a "Patty-Melt" here in Okla, with butter added
A patty melt is on bread not a bun
Either way....it's a patty-melt in upstate New York too... delicious!
😮 oh my goodness that looks like a messy burger but drool 😍
I live in Milwaukee and I'm at Solly's at least twice a week 😋... u did an excellent job....just the right amount of butter
all these people overreacting because of some butter smh
copious is right. that's some serious butter. looks great! thanks for the video.
Wow that's a Buttery Hot mess but it looks amazing
I live 4 mins away from Solly's haven't been there since I was a kid. This is making me wanna go there this weekend.
Ah yum I remember the stockyards butter burger like you did it yesterday , this looks tasty Greg!! Got to be in the top 5 messy burgers category but oh so good!
Matthew Schurter Nothing like a messy burger, eh! Do what I do, eat over the sink & use the faucet as a "napkin", haha.
Been there done that so true !!!
Haha! Nice to know I'm not alone, lol.
That Stockyards Butter Burger is still in my top three of all time favorite burgers. Soooooo Good!
Nice video. I was headed to Solly’s this evening to try a butter burger. It is Sunday and they closed at 4:00 pm. Bummer. Glad I discovered that before driving all the way there. I’ll give them a try later this week…. So tonight, I’m using this video to make my own Butter Burger. Thanks.
Omg my mouth is watering plus I’m hella stoned munchies overload
hell yes
Im not from Cali, man, but this burger is from overload hell! -----> Munchies away!
My arteries clogged just from watching this video.
I like my burgers thick ( about 1" cooked ) with the diced onions on the inside please. Medium rare will do. 👍
A shout out all the way from Africa, my man, damn good burger!!!🍔🍔🍔
