"we tell them we love them"
Great words from the Principal/Headmaster. Boys try to be tough, but they all need love. We all do.
I was really impressed by Steve Hansen, Richie Mo'unga and other All Blacks staff and players who talked openly about mental health and showing their emotions. Rugby is a tough game. But it's also a loving game.

Is this a real quote from Tana?
But honestly, I'm from Auckland and I've partied in AKL, Rotorua, Hamilton and Wellington. I have to say that Hamilton has the best vibe. The people just seem to be so down to earth and welcoming. People shared food with me on the street, we had a laugh in a club, people make more eye-contact and smile. Yeah, there were some dodgy people, but they seemed harmless.

Yes the ABs didn’t get to the final of the RWC this time around but there are some people in the comments that are missing the point of this documentary. NZ and the ABs have consistently been good at Rugby, there was an expectation that they would do very well at the RWC and so when they failed it looked like a long way to fall. It’s happened before and to every team that has won the RWC or any champion team at the top of their game. You don’t always remain at the top.
But to maintain the quality teams that have been fielded over the years since Rugby went pro, these stars have to come from somewhere and that’s what the documentary is covering.
I think if you were to make a similar documentary in South Africa or even in Australia, you’d probably find many things similar. That is, to build legendary teams and players you start that thirst and passion young.

  • @brutismaximus1
    @brutismaximus1 5 років тому +93

A few elite rugby schools aren't enough to sustain the ABs. Banning full-contact rugby in schools is killing our player base. The schools I went to back in the 90s, most boys played rugby cause we got use to having games every lunchtime + bullrush. My local which has produced professional players didn't even have a 1st XV this year. Everyone just wants to play basketball cause that's what they do every lunch break. The few elites who are still keen end up going to super 8 schools cause that's the only way to get recognized. Also a lot of Mums are scared of their boys getting hurt and are putting them in soccer.
You see it in the current ABs. A lack of mongrel and strength and weakness in key positions. We never had a huge player base to choose from. 50 years from now it will likely be even smaller.

Yeah I disagree the pedigree of our rugby is good if not getting better because of training techniques, recovery and rehabilitation are leaps beyond what the were in the 90s
I do how ever agree with the lack of mongrel a lot of that In our grass roots rugby and club rugby but in saying that, that sort of play is hard to sustain on the body and has lead to a lot potentials being injured and they just don’t comeback the same

It seems like Hamilton Boys High is slowly becoming a pipeline for young Fijians earning rugby scholarships. Reece at 8:36 has propel our image internationally, and with that we see at 9:14 Joeli Niumataiwalu a former RKS sanix winner in 2018 playing lock for HBHS.Hopefully more forwards and not just outside backs get a chance like them.

They have beaten another SA powerhouse school Paarl Boys in the World Sanix Youth Festival final a few years ago, so definitely no pushovers. Last 12 years
    3x National Titles
    10x Super 8 Titles
    11x Chiefs Titles
You can argue the point on which competition is the strongest in NZ either (Auckland 1A or Super 8) they are both very strong but the Auckland 1A competition Winners have always been diverse, while the Super 8 Competition has been dominated by Hamilton Boys High School. I gotta give a special mention to Hastings BHS in the last 3-4 years they have been very strong too but the stats don't lie Hamilton Boys has be the most CONSISTENT team in NZ.
I've been keeping a close eye on the SA schools and they look bigger than our NZ schools and are VERY strong too, but it is way too hard to compare the two systems saying which one is better.
The Sanix World invitational tournament for NZ teams is very inconsistent because our winners from this year goes next year due to the schedules. Most schools that win national titles end up losing most of there squad the next year cause they have graduated. I don't know if its the same for SA, but could someone comment and tell me, i'd like to know.
But there is no way anyone can say NZ schools is better than SA schools and SA schools is better than NZ schools. All I do know is that they are both a cut above the rest of the world.

Winning is hard alright, staying consistently in the top four is far harder and thats what these champion schools both in NZ & SA are excellent at which is why both countries are not long out of the lime light.

Hear me out here, but one day aliens are going to invade us, disable all our technology and weaponry, and when it comes down to the final showdown, we release the Kiwis, let them do the haka, and then just watch the aliens get steamrollered.

Isn't Grey College from South Africa the one crushing every other school team in the world the laat couple of years!
Regardless, NZ schools clearly have alot of passion.

Keagan Pietersen My hearts balling for them. The World Schools festival was held in South Africa with South African referees and the majority of the teams were South African. We also sent Napier boys, Christchurch boys and Southland boys college over to the tournament who are some of the shittiest teams in NZ secondary school rugby. I’m sure that South African schools work hard, but going on here and all you South Africans complaining and moaning talking shit about NZ secondary school rugby when you only beat teams like CBHS is just un needed.

I wish my family didn't move to Australia :( the passion for rugby isn't the same, there's barely any school rugby teams, and there's like 6 teams within an 80km range and we have to travel so far.
