Revive the Jeep XJ's timeless design? | Chip Foose Draws a Car - Ep. 10

- 2021 Ford Bronco or 1st-gen Jeep Cherokee: Which would you rather have? The Jeep Cherokee (XJ) was a pioneer that set the stage for the massive success of the modern day SUV. It had an unmistakable combination of on-road handling, off-road prowess, and a simple, tough, but comfortable design for the whole family. And while the more famous Jeep Wrangler is also more desirable to many off-roaders, the XJ still enjoys a loyal following to this day. Chip Foose sees potential in the clean and uncluttered lines, doing very little to make it into the perfect off-road vehicle.

The current version of the Cherokee is a perfect example of what happens when you fix something that isn't broken.
I had a 2001 that had 85K on it when I bought it, It had 311K on it when I sold it. That kid is still driving it.
phinfan1972 I bought mine with 20k (’01’) racked up close to 400k after 12 years.
I've got an '01 with 256,000 on it, and only now changing out all the engine gaskets
I have a '93 XJ daily driver, 162K. I've owned it for 19 years. Replaced a '91 4X4 XJ Sport I gave my son. He drove it until 250K.
I had a 1990 with 4 speed for 17 years.
Kicked myself for selling it.
Also had a 1997. Finally found a barn find one 1992 with 197,000 kms. In almost mint shape. The guy had it sitting in his quanset for 10 years.
Hello from france.
I have a 1997, use it since 14 years, 239 k and in a really good condition, i love him, i can't imagine to sold that wonderful car.
Too bad Chrysler didn’t consult Chip when they designed the new Cherokee
It definitely looks much better than that metro-sexual design Jeep currently has.
Yea, that was Fiat's fault
The NEW Cherokee has NO SOUL!!! its just a cookie cutter crossover vehicle!! It would be really COOL if Jeep and Chip did a Special Edition Grand Cherokee or Wrangler!
Now the Bronco. ( but without a V8 ) 👎
@@jimmysapien9961 Apparently there's a way to order the bronco with a 5.0... That said I don't mind the 2019+ KL Cherokee, but it's no XJ that's for sure.
There’s a reason the body styling didn’t change a whole lot for 17 years. The difference between an 84 Cherokee and a 2001 Cherokee are marginal. I love mine.
marginal but make a hell of a difference, the 97-01 flows much better than the older models
Same here, I have a 98 with only 78k miles on it, It's my first car and my first project car, I love the thing to death
@@luccagiannangelo903 My 98 has 175,000 and my 2001 has 185,000. My hands are greasy today from putting new shift solenoids in the transmission in the 98 on Sunday. :)
@@KitsuneDunx that would matter in a race car, but this isn't a race car. The XJ was never built for speed. It was built to go anywhere instead.

The XJ Cherokee has been cited by many famous designers as the most pure expression of an SUV ever. It is timeless and cannot be improved, even by Chip.
Source for this claim?
Lol. Land Cruiser all the way. World wide.
spot on fred the xj is the movie star of all the suv's as well because they always show up in most movies even if its just in the back ground i notice it all the time love it
@@buckhorncortez The 2007 book Jeep Off-Road called the XJ a "significant link in the evolution of the 4x4." In 2011 Kiplinger magazine selected the XJ as one of the "cars that refuse to die." Automotive journalist Robert Cumberford, writing for Automobile, called the Jeep XJ one of the 20 greatest cars of all time - for its design, and "possibly the best SUV shape of all time, it is the paradigmatic model to which other designers have since aspired."
It was also the first SUV to have unibody construction and have any kind of crash protection considered during design. The Land Rover and Land Cruiser were more like a CJ jeep - a utility vehicle. The XJ really defined the modern family SUV with comfort, balanced on and off road performance, and utility in a compact package with four doors. Compare it to a current RAV4 or Forester and see what i mean.
Boy Chip, you should have made that rendering a few years ago and given it to Jeep. That would have been a much better Cherokee than the one they produced.
That's the perfect redesign of the Cherokee not the current model

I love my 2000 Cherokee, bought it cheap with 160k miles. I have done some modifications to it but always keeping it clean. Definitely, a great overall vehicle, and the main reason why I started my own UA-cam channel. 👍🏻 glad to see a legend like Chip sketching this all timer.
SUBBED. Always looking for fellow Jeep Cherokee UA-camrs. I've owned a 1993, 1996, 2000, 2001, and now a 1990. Only thing that kills these is rust from road salt where I live. My 1990 is nearly rust free...gonna POr 15 the whole unibody and see how it holds up.
The finest SUV ever made. It's been all downhill ever since, sadly.
Most SUV designs have been entirely pussified so that women and soy boys will buy them.
I love my 2016 Grand Cherokee.

Cherokee or "Cherokees"? I wonder what percentage of owners had more than one. (I've had 5) I cried when my last one got wrecked. :( When I was born I came home from the hospital in a 1984 XJ, and I've made it very clear to my family that's what I want for a hearse.
@@dmelson7502 That and the 4.0L engine - they realized how bad they screwed up later on, look at how much more the new Jeeps look like they're based on the old XJ. This was mostly a result of the total failure Daimler merger. Lately Jeep has been outselling Toyota - definitely never happened when they were making minivans like the Liberty.
I whole heartedly agree Chip, it's a classic beauty that is timeless and ultra-utilitarian. And much like the classic 911 body style it should have never been changed, only refined over time. I've owned my 4.0 liter, Command-Trac OD automatic 4x4 Jeep Cherokee 2-Door XJ since new in 1998, and wouldn't trade it for love nor money. The newer models are no were near as rugged, and frankly I'd be very hesitant to take one trail riding.
Except they were way under-powered.

Yup! The XJ is just classic in every sense of the word. I have a ‘98 w/ 205,000 miles on it and I just love it.
exactly right rick the xj is the best looking suv of all time and also the most iconic .The xj has also made it on the top 20 greatest car list as number 20 .I have a 95 xj that ive had since new it has 225k miles on it .I drive mine in australia but its built in ohio usa which is the most iconic place for them to be built . greatest car ever i will forever keep mine they will be a collectable one day. I just love it too i hope all the xj lovers hold onto theirs as well happy jeepin brother
Dave Starsky you’re right about it being on the list of greats, but the list I saw was a Top TEN & it was up there with the Ford Model T and the Chevy Bel Air. These were great vehicles. The only thing is that the engine would outlast the body. They rotted out so quickly.
Yeap unfortunately the sheet metal was prone to rust easily. But if you take care of them they are forever. I love mine, little rust, 170k miles and still running great

Jeep XJ is the best looking, it was a clean and original body style when it first appeared, there was nothing like it!
Mr Foose, I completely agree with you analysis of this car and your talent is awesome.
My first car was a 93 Grand Cheorkee Laredo, in my opinion the best car ever made. Between the unkillable i6, the comfortable cloth seats, the good power it had, and real working 4H and 4L, just a fantastic vehicle.
I miss it.
I have a '99, and all your points are spot-on. I was disappointed I had the cloth seats at first sight, but damn if they aren't comfy. the i6 really is indestructible. that thing will knock forever and keep on going. it's never given me one problem and has gone through and over everything I've ever asked it to. my only gripe was that it's full-time 4wd, but that's a great thing in the winter.

This brings joy to my soul, grew up being a fan of both Mr Foose and the humble XJ. I’ve daily driven my lifted XJ for nearly 7 years now in urban Central Florida and love that it’s comfortable sitting in traffic with a/c and my Bluetooth radio or throw a cooler in the back and spend the day off road. Has everything I want and nothing I don’t, spare parts are abundant and affordable, doesn’t hurt that it’s easy to work on as well.
"Basically, it's already perfect, we're just gonna have some fun"
Wow, when Chip doesn’t change anything about your design.
had an '89 & a '97, both 2-door models - got me all over southern Idaho back country for the field work I did - favorite vehicle ever
I have an 01 XJ I use for off-road. Started out stock an 2 years later still an ongoing project. I live it. Great artistry an craftsmanship Chip.
As someone who drives a 911 and sells Audis, I will say that the brief 6 months I had with my XJ taught me that going back to basics might be just what we need! Loved the simplicity and DIY-able nature of the XJ
I just got one from an older lady. She only drove it about 3,000 miles a year right now at 75k. It's a 97 two door in a turquoise colors. It's absolutely beautiful, I almost don't want to drive it around just to preserve it
X2 lol .. mine is chilly pepper red 98 and the color changes with light
I have a 93 Grand Cherokee and this is basically what I did to it. 33 inch tires all around and drive it! I love this old Jeep!!!!
FOOSE showing some love for the Jeep Cherokee..... But, I must mention... the results of your drawing, is basically, a Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ with 2 doors.... LOL I love it!!!!!
I own a 96’ XJ and drive it everyday. To the store and up in the mountains.
Even Chip Foose wouldn't mess with the awesomeness of the Jeep XJ.
Chip can make anything look bad ass,and he can build them, the best car designer I think in my time on earth, hats off to you Chip
You can have it look however you want, it was the solid axles and the 4.0L engine that gave it its soul. Get rid of the fluff and go simple. Without the solid axles it is just another SUV.

I have a 2001 with 190,000 miles

Love the two doors! But they are getting more difficult to find
I had a 94' 2 door cherokee from when i was 16 to 32 years old. Great vehicle hardly ever let me down. Wish i still had it.
Absolutely Chip! I had a 97 XJ Sport, and I still drive my 96 XJ Sport, both white, and both 4 W.D. The 96 is my Race Shop work truck, and I will NEVER sell it.
Almost 300K miles, doesn't use a drop of oil.
🇺🇸👍🇺🇸👍🇺🇸 if you blow up a 4.0, you shouldn't have a driver's license.
Hopefully Jeep takes a hint on what we actually want and it HAS TO BE Affordable FFS lol (plus put a Chrysler engine back in too!)
XJ had an AMC engine 😊
@@TheIngoBeck The beautiful Inline straight-6!
To many arrogant engineers and designers.
The XJ was one of the most popular suv's ever made complete with the inline 4.0 litre engine. The 5 speed manual made it even better.
Chrysler is not going to listen to your hint when the vast majority of buyers are screaming for cheap luxury crossovers. It sucks for enthusiasts but you have to accept you’re the minority of SUV buyers. Heck I’d say the majority of wranglers in my Area never even see a dirt road. It’s just parents who want to still look a little cool at soccer practice.
Another great Foose Design re-make. I also like the sound track. Don't mess with it.
Growing up in the 90s, my mom had 3 XJ's. 1 Sport, and 2 Classics. 4.0 Straight 6, automatic, 4x4. Only thing my dad did was throw on some BFG All Terrains. Never had a problem going threw anything. I miss em..
Never underestimate that old dude out on the trail with an old clapped out xj. Mr Foose really hit a home run with this rendition
Loved my 97 XJ. 3” lift, 31BFG KO’s. So much fun. Simple to work on, relatively easy to maintain, no extra junk. Keep it simple
Exactly, good choice on the Ko's too.

As an xj enthusiast ( ive had nearly 20) ive never heard anyone call one elegant. I like it! Keep up the good work!
I had a 1996 4 door family vehicle that I ran until 595,000 miles, when the engine would no longer start and it developed a death wobble so I sold it for parts..
I can tell anyone who would like to know how to fix a death wobble. Long story short, don't put as much toe in as the specs tell you to. Barely any toe in and it will drive perfect and will eliminate the death wobble!!!
@@dannywilsher4165 I spent 1800 trying to fix it and everyone said the entire front end was shot and would have to be replaced so just wasn't worth it
@@Thousand_yard_King Your mechanic bent u over. $1800 could get you every part you need to replace the entire front suspension and the front axle

Man I wish they still made those!!! I’ve owned 2 of them a 90’and a 97’. Loads of fun.
The XJ and the Jeep, "Universal," (MB, CJ, YJ, TJ) are timeless designs that should never be overly altered. Mr. Chip Foose fully respects that. A good lift, aftermarket bumpers, a, step bar, maybe a few lights, and that is all you need because they are actual improvements, not just cosmetic improvements. For the mechanics, the AMC 242ci I6 is incredible! The AX-15 manual transmission is a workhorse. I would only change the axles. Changing the rear Dana 35c to a Dana 44 with disk brakes is all that is really needed. The NP231j transfer case is a stout unit that is perfect for the part time 4x4. If the NP241 transfer case is in one, it is just a bit weaker but you gain full time four wheel drive. I prefer the NP231j. If really wanting to go to full rugged axle mode, a rear Dana 60 or Ford 9 inch with a front Dana 44 would be incredible on an XJ. With all I know about XJs, you would think I own one. Unfortunately, I do not have a Cherokee XJ as of yet. But I have modified quite a many of them and have fallen in love with them. I can not find a nice example to purchase right now. All I find are XJs in their twilight years being sold. They are mainly good for parts that you can still drive the old Cherokee home. I am getting desperate. I may buy three twilight year XJs and build a good one if I can not find a prime example as to start for my base project.
They need to bring the xj back. Chip is a great artist and knowledgeable in the auto industry
I was surprised when I saw you draw my Jeep exactly as it is complete with the bushwacker fender flares and lift etc. and what talent you have! I wish I could send you a picture!
I have a '90 XJ and driving it daily. Hope it last forever!
I've had my black, 01 Cherokee since 2005, and it's my daily driver. It's been swapped with a GM LS 6.0 during that time, and it's a fun, reliable, performer that I can travel long distances in, and hit the trails when I get there. I love the thing.
I’m jealous how hard was the ls swap
@@don683 Not easy or practical, but lots of fun. Cooling system is the toughest thing to get right. I'm going to end up adding an auxiliary radiator to keep the temps down.
This video shows that the design of the XJ is unbeatable... not even chip foose has been able to improve it. But chip has made a good lada niva ;)
My side trim refurbished and repainted by Foose... Spare tire rack by Foose... roof rack by JCR Off-road... a bike rack... wheels by Foose...
So essentially just a drawing of what everyone does to their XJ's since forever. Looks great man!
98 XJ, 259k miles on her. My buddy drove me a couple hours away to go look at it last year after my 88 XJ had enough and committed electrical suicide. Saw the 98, haggled the guy down to $800, and drove it two hours back home the same night. The thing didn't miss a beat. She needed TLC, and I've slowly been giving her some love. Swapping over the upgrades I had on the 88 slowly. Next on the list is new filter/solenoids for the transmission and a fluid flush, and at the end of the summer im gonna be putting a nice little 3 inch lift on it. Sagged out OEM leaf springs; ultimately cheaper to buy a lift and not replace with OEM.
Edit: the rockers on the 98 are pretty swiss-cheesy, but everything else on it is solid. For $800 it was a good deal, and it made the difference in me having a way to work and back for the following months. I got my 88.. 6 years ago now, for $750 + 100 for a new battery (it had been sitting in a police impound lot for years)
It may not seem sensible to a lot of people for me to spend just as much money on a lift kit as I have for the whole jeep but to me its not just "transportation" or "resale value". It is a hobby, a learning experience. I've learned more about electronics and wrenching tinkering with my XJ's then I have any other vehicle.
Ive owned a few cherokees. But the 93-98 grand cherokee will forever be my favorite
I have a 1990 comanche and agree with chip. Best looking truck out there. Dad's has the 97+ front on his mj, brother has the original front-end on his mj, and i have the wagoneer quad headlights on mine. All three xj options and i couldn't tell you which looks better. Actually Chevy turned the blazer into an ugly ass car...
Have never heard the XJ called elegant before..

Revive Jeep Grand Wagoneer. My Father had a 1982 sky blue v8 350 model. We went to Florida for like 4 or 5 years in a row in it. It's such a beautiful sports utility vehicle.
Black two-door XJ was my first Jeep ever, and it was a great, timeless design.

Great you took the one thing that made the Old school jeeps So beloved the square body, You turned it into a freaking compass
Chip is absolutely correct! -- The legacy Jeep Cherokee XJ was perfection in SUV design - simple but elegant in a timeless fashion. And that's why they are still extremely popular and going for a premium in the used car market. Today's vehicles are not vehicles - they are super-hyped electronic gadgets on wheels - no character - no soul - and nothing but flash.
Same thinking, back to the basics. Love that rear window view. I would add a light bar and that's it.
I own a 1997 4-door XJ, love that critter. Has a lot of flaws but every time I go into a 4-wheel power slide on dirt, a smile appears on my face. I took a glance at the Bronco Sport but perhaps someday . . . perhaps.
I’ve owned numerous XJ Cherokee’s in my lifetime. Every one of them was fantastic!
I can’t believe Chip Foose redesigned the humble XJ! Had mine almost 10 years.
My first vehicle was a 87 Jeep Cherokee. Second vehicle while I still owned my 87 Cherokee was a Thunderbird. I then bought a 96 Cherokee and sold my 87 (which I honestly should never have done). I stopped driving my Cherokee because I blew the engine when my oil pump went. I kept it for years afterwards. I went through 4 other vehicles and eventually gave it to a buddy when I was moving to NY. When I moved to NY I bought a 2000 Cherokee (which I've still got). It's lifted 8 inch's and runs 35's but I can fit 37's. I've not used it in probably 5 years as I was removing the engine and installing a stroker with 365 hp. Things went south and I moved back to PA and I just don't have the financial feasibility to keep going with my project and bought a Ford Expedition. I would sell the Expedition before I sold my Cherokee again. My Cherokee isn't a very road Worthy vehicle as a lot of what I've done to it is to make it handle better off road than on. The body and everything else is still perfectly fine, just needs finished.
you eliminated alot of the busy lines on the side of the car (the bumper guard etc), and extended the rear window. super cool. I always thought it would be cool to eliminate the B Pillar.
I bought an 01 xj about a year ago. It had one owner (elderly lady) who kept in in her garage all of its life and did all of the maintenance since she bought it new. It was in perfect shape and had the desirable transfer case. Flame red. I regret selling that thing every day
Wow, i paid 5k for a rusty Michigan jeep with a engine knock and oil leaks. Never sell a score like that.

I would let Chip Foose make my jeep look like this anytime. Love the simplicity of this.
I'm pretty sure buddy would agree with me on this to that owns a Jeep Cherokee bring it back with that design with solid front and rear axles and bring back the legendary 4.0 liter 6-cylinder maybe make a little more Martin with a little more horsepowerthe old ones prove themselves again bulletproof look at mine is 33 years old and it still running the original it almost got 200,000 miles
Ah, I've had 3 XJ's and they've all made it to over 300K miles and still ran great. One was at 378K but had to stop driving it due to rust rot. I just got a 1990 XJ and am going to POR 15 undercoat it so it can handle the winter road salt where I live.
We have a 97 that has 240k and still going strong. (Knock on wood)
Mine has 240k lol
CHazinite Casualties wrong chat bro lol
I’m on my second XJ. I regret selling my first one. 308k on the clock and still running strong. Timeless classics these are.
I own and daily drive a lifted ‘96 XJ. Chip is right. Timeless design, simple in its beauty.
Your rendering looks exactly like a two-door version of my '95 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the design they did next! Bought it with 32,000 miles, kept logs for every dime spent on it...until19 years later it was rear-ended by a too fast Peterbuilt! Had 336,000 miles when totaled and was still going strong. Nice artwork, Chip!..as usual !
My 95 xj was my first vehicle. I bought it in 2005 and I still have it today. I wish Jeep would make this car again. Very few changes would be needed.
An XJ is on my list. It's literally aesthetically perfect. And the 4.0 is invincible
Days until I retire my xj, I will miss it, ty for reminding me how good a car it has been to me
With a solid front axel. And not that wimpy v6 love my 98 Cherokee. Simple and dependable.
I think my rust free '98 XJ 5 speed needs some Overhaulin. The only thing you missed is the color, it should be Colorado camouflage, which is white. Thank you for this, I agree 100%. Elegant yet functional.
He used the fender flares to give the illusion of less nose overhang. Pretty smart actually in my opinion anyways.
He even inched the front fender blinker forward a bit. I think it he kind of made it look more along the lines of the first gen S10 Blazer. Which is an improvement again in my opinion.
This is awesome! I have a ‘98 xj with 250 000 miles that I daily drive. I love it!
Foose is amazing, not only artistic but hugely skilled with vehicles. In his sketch even, I think he has minutely and subtly changed the angle of the windshield and rear pillars and slightly reduced the thickness of the rear pillar. The changes even though small and subtle really improve the design. I might be completely wrong about the angles and it might just be the presentation, but either way the sketch looks better than the original to me.
Great grocery getter during the week and off road vehicle on the weekend. I would be great to see this back into production.
Speaking the gospel! I will never get rid of my 96 Cherokee!
Jeep designers, could learn a thing or 2 with you ... Thanks Foose ... Great respect for your work, as you know as well to respect great designs.
I’m in the middle of a Willys wagon build & Chip’s insight is legit!
