  • In this video i go over the steps we took to adapt factory 2017 chevy silverado dual 16 inch brushless fans onto a radiator from griffen.
    Matt, Brandon and shane at Performance Fab in Roebuck SC. did a amazing job on making it all fit.
    Pwm control of brushless fans is an awesome function of holley efi that can help you dial in coolant temp to stay exactly where you want it.

    Lots of good information here. Thank you for sharing I can provide a little added knowledge. Please avoid using the relays to switch power on/off to the fans if possible. Brushless fans often have capacitors inside them that filter electrical noise and smooth input voltage. Adding a relay can cause these capacitors to charge and discharge with use. Basically you're adding a potential failure point to your system that isn't needed, as well as increasing electrolytic wear to the capacitors in the fan motor. Best case your relays will take a beating as the caps charge and discharge, worst case you will cause the premature failure of the capacitors in your brushless motors. If GM doesn't use a relay to switch power on/off, that should be a really big indicator that you shouldn't either. Just some friendly advice from someone who knows. - Brent Chuck SPAL USA Applications Engineer

      @brent5218 Рік тому +1

      P.S. These aren't SPAL fans, but most brushless fans have internal caps. You could always measure the capacitance across the Power/Ground and verify.

      The relays actually turn on with the battery kill switch
      I just wanted a way to segregate it from where I picked up power from. Awesome to see you comment in here, I love yalls stuff. Just wish your brushless fans would survive at 17.5 volts. Maybe get rid of that safety in there lol

    • @brent5218

      @@theholleyefiguy They will survive all day at 17.5V, they just won't run. 🙂 9-16V operation for the 12V nominal fans. SPAL's first brushless fan was made for the Chevy Volt and that spec is taken right from GM's requirements. SPAL just ran with it ever since and applied it to all our 12V fans. Unfortunately it probably won't ever change. Their design goal is to only operate under conditions that are 'safe' to maximize the reliability/availability of the part. I imagine there are some 12V components that wouldn't be too happy operating at 17.5V. We could absolutely build something, but it's all about cost savings to the large OEMs who buy 99% of our fans.

      @deltapag5051 Рік тому

      @theholleyefiguy the Delta PAG fans operate all the way upto 24vdc. 17-19vdc is a piece of cake. They don't care if you use a relay or not and if something happens to the electronics, no biggie, just replace the module. You don't even need to remove the fans, just swap out the ECMs. The DeltaPAG brushless motor has zero electronics in there. They're bulletproof.

    Here's an argument for NOT using a relays on PWM fans: the capacitors inside are the biggest failure point of all controllers and capacitors 'wear' from constant charge/discharge cycles the most. Keeping them always powered is best & relays are just another point of failure.
    It's also important to not have them come on too early, otherwise you're running with your thermostat mostly closed and pulling amps for no reason.

    What alternator and pulley ratio? I seem to not be able to keep an alternator live at RPM and produce amps at idle at the same time. Either I pulley it to make amps at idle and it comes apart at RPM, or put a bigger pulley on to live at RPM and it won't do jack at idle.

      we monitored voltage at the source and kept it with .2 volts. measured amperage draw, used a brand new 2.5 inch thick radiator to pull thru, and then rigged up the annamometer exactly 18 inches away from the fan, then recorded all the averages and all the highest readings we got, did the math to come up with cfm. the tell tale sign is that you dont get power for free, so amperage and voltage will tell you real wattage, i feel like the factory stuff is kept at a lower rpm due to wanting it to last 100k miles. unfortunetly i dont know how to modify that lol. but the clear winner was these fans, then second place was the high power 16 inch spal brushed fans, but they were advised to not run at 16 volts so that idea got tossed out. the spals moved alot of air as well but were power hogs pretty sure they were 29.5 amps each with is wild. the beauty of brushless
      i didnt have a set of 16 inch delta pag so it wasnt really a fair fight for them honestly. the dual 12s did go and drew less power but its hard for a 12 to move what a 16 moves
