Floyd Patterson once said that although he got knocked down more times than any other heavyweight, he got back on his feet more than any other too.

Patterson might have dominated a cruiserweight division had there been one in America at the time. His fights with Liston were comparable to a lightweight fighting a middleweight.

I*f anything, Floyd's performance in this second fight was worse than the first. he made Liston miss in the first fight but made no attempt to do so in this fight. He tried to out-slug him and was hopelessly out-gunned. They wouldn't be in the same division today.

But my mom and I sat huddled over our radio listening to that first liston fight, she knowing my fears and yearnings, and hugged me in sympathy when your dad got knocked out in the first round... and I wept.
The further we are from a specific era, the worse fans become at analyzing losses. Some have already rightfully pointed out that Floyd was a small heavyweight. But the truth is he was always going to have trouble vs a guy like Liston, who had a brutal jab and power in both hands. The thing about the peekaboo style is that your defense is your offense, basically you're always in range bobbing and weaving waiting for the guy to open up, which means you're more open than you should be against a guy like Liston. You're always going to get caught using this style, which is fine vs Tommy Jackson and Jimmy Slade, but it's a death sentence vs Liston. Every great champion has nightmare matchups and Patterson ran into his during his prime. That's all there is to these two losses.
The 'Peek-a-boo' style worked pretty well for a little guy named Mike Tyson.
Yes exactly, the size didn’t matter as Floyd definitely had a killer left hook and great speed in combinations. Guys like Liston and later Foreman excelled at beating opponents who moved towards them while ducking due to their uppercuts.

+Giulio Zoppello Liston was better than any of them, including Ali. But he was a hated champ for being an ex-con and had to go, so he had to lay down against Ali. Sad but true. I remember Ali at the time saying that Sonny could have whipped Frazier, Norton, Foreman, etc. It was only later than he changed his tune when he realized the money was better for him to retract.

+KSmithism Ali didn't need help with the other fighters. None were anything close to Liston. Sonny was a pure fighting machine and much too good for Ali. But Ali was such a cash cow and Sonny so hated that the set up was easy to pull off.
You got guys today who won't even make the jump from Middleweight (160) to super middleweight (168); or super middleweight (168) to light heavyweight (175) and (we're talking less than a 10 lbs difference in each case) then you got guys like Patterson who fought their entire career conceding 10,15,20,25 lbs to their opponents. I tip my hat to Patterson for not only taking on Sonny Liston, but for taking him on a second knowing the outcome of his first fight which was almost identical to to this one. However he was not match physically for Sonny Liston who was not only 20lbs heavier than Patterson, but to add insult to injury, one of the physically strongest and most powerful heavyweights of all time
That has always happened on a regular basis in the case of heavyweights, until today. Cruisers or natural light-heavyweight boxers like Marco Huck and Steve Cunningham have fought against natural heavyweights conceeding a huge number of pounds as well.
I know I think Dempsey conceded almost 70lbs when he fought Jesse Willard.... Rocky Marciano, Floyd Patterson, Jerry Quarry never fought at a real heavyweight weight
Not only a debate of wheight,there's something that happens very frequently in boxe:an inside figher has difficulties against a "slogger"(who always focuses on powerful shots) because he closes the distance making the slogger easier to throw his best punches.An outside figher beats easily a slogger because he finds the distance,so the slogger is forced to catch him around and his slow and powerful shots(thrown from a static position) don't hit him.Finally the outsider has some disadvantages with the inside fighter because the insider is used to catching someone and crossing the distances,but these distances are essential for an outsider,it's a circle.what I suppose is that floyd is an inside figher and liston a slogger,and although Floyd is surely a better boxer than Liston he cannot escape the rule of the circle.watch for example Ali,bet once by frazier,then frazier bet by foreman(a slogger!!) Who has been humiliated by Ali.
I'm very well aware of the rock-paper-scissor game but in this case: Liston was one of the most powerful heavyweights that ever walked into the game. he could lift the back of a car, or unhinge a door with a rare smile on his face...an up-and-coming Foreman said Liston was the hardest puncher he ever met (on par with Ron Lyle)....and we're talking about Foreman, the slugger of sluggers....I simply think that Patterson was simply too small (in weight) for Liston because in height, they both stood 6'0''. Had Patterson been bigger or Liston smaller, the outcome would've been different. I mean in all likelihood, Liston did more of the pressing than Patterson because psychologically, he knew he had the edge (plus Liston had an unusually long reach 84")... I mean Patterson could punch too, he had 40KOs out of 50 fights. Besides, the second the "real" heavyweights started showing up (Ali 211-224), Frazier ( 203-224), Foreman (217-224), Lyle (226), Shavers (211), Patterson's edge on the heavyweight scene diminished. Heck I'm surprised he did so good at his weight (189-198). Guys like him, Quarry, Marciano, Johansson, Foster, they were cruiserweights at best
Simon Traversy Patterson was protected by Cus. He did not face Cleveland Williams, Zora Folley or Eddie Machen during his reign. He became champion defeating old Archie Moore and "defended" his title against weak opposition. The first guy with KO power he faced (Johansson) and he was KOed. After avenging the loss and winning the 3rd fight to the swede, he could not duck anymore Sonny Liston.
I would've loved to see a bout between the Sonny Liston of 1963, and the George Foreman of 1973. Two very powerful punchers.
Early in George Foreman's career, he was a sparring partner of Liston's......

Wow what a great match. I am sitting and adding my own scoreboard and when checking all the numbers i can safely say as a boxing lover that Sonny Liston won this match.
Patterson should have stayed in the light heavyweight division. He didn't have the frame and power to be a heavyweight, and he wasn't quick enough to stay away from a hard puncher like Liston.
The heavyweight division has always been attractive for those guys because it offers more fame and money. Roy Jones was probably the greatest cruiserweight of all time but decided to move up to light heavyweight and ultimately heavyweight. Those shifts are ultimately what hurt his career and messed him up.
The problem is, a really good light heavyweight can win against certain heavyweights, as long as the guy doesn't have tremendous knockout power. A perfect example is Michael Spinks who was considered one of the top light heavyweights ever and then went up and beat Larry Holmes not once but twice. However, when he went up against Tyson, he was destroyed.
Light heavyweight (175 pounds) is actually lighter than cruiserweight (190 pounds). Otherwise, valid points. Guys like Bob Foster didn't stand a chance against Frazier and Ali. You mentioned Spinks. But really, those are aberrations to the rule, especially in the modern day, with the heavyweight division really being a super heavyweight division now.
He became the World Heavyweight Champion. The first to regain that title after losing in history. Floyd was a great boxer.....But hey....it's just LIston and Ali were better...........Floyd did ok.

Floyd Patterson was a damn good champion, but like Ken Norton, he folded under the pressure of a huge puncher with boxing skills to match physical strength and size. Floyd looks defeated before the bell for round one in both matches.
Patterson knew that he couldn't beat Liston. But he refused to dodge Sonny.

Liston was all power at this stage of his career. No heavyweight in the world would've lasted the distance. He couldn't pin down Ali (Clay as he then was) because he couldn't set up his man with that telegraph-pole left jab: Ali just kept on shifting outta range. But Patterson? His style was ideally suited to Sonny's strengths - and Floyd paid the price in 2 consecutive bouts.

I have no idea what made floyd think he could win this after the 1st fight but i gotta give him points for still punching after the 2nd knockdown.
To put it simply? Floyd had a lot of heart. Sonny must have been horrifying to face in the ring. Arguably, he had no physical weaknesses and the only trace of a weak spot I can find in him is mental, and even that is heavily speculative.

Floyd was known for being a gentleman so he probably didn't mind giving a shot to the best contender around, then again 5 former champions Braddock, Charles, Walcott, and I think Marciano, and Johansson gave him the edge so maybe he thought he could take it.

Watching this fight, it is hard to believe that Patterson ever held the heavyweight crown at all - and he held it for six years! How is that possible? He was never in the same class as Marciano, Liston or Ali. He was a good light-heavyweight but that is all.
Right, the way he outsmarted and outboxed Liston. No way Patterson could have beaten Marciano - not even in his dreams. Patterson was a beefed up middle-weight, not a true heavy-weight. He had quick hands and could move pretty good - but he had a glass chin. If Rocky hit him even one good shot, he would have gone to sleep.

***** Charles and especially Walcott were past their prime/too old when they faced Rocky. Definetely, Floyd would have been a tougher adversary for Rocky, but I think Marciano would win anyway. Now Liston is another story, I don't think Rocky could last even 3 rounds.
***** Not even close to being right. Louis and Walcott both hit harder than Floyd (and Archie in his prime hit very hard) and once Rocky caught up to him, it would be a short history for Patterson. He couldn't have lasted more than five rounds. Even a first-round KO by the Rock is well within the realm.

When Liston was supposedly 28, in '60, Patterson was of the opinion that 36 was nearer the mark. Sonny was said to be a grown man aged 12, which sounds ridiculous, but add Floyd's 8 years and you have a much more believable age of 20.

Liston got a 82 overall rating at fight night champion with a jab rated at 13 its such a shame because people say he could knock his opponents out with his jab only so he shoulve got a 20 and a 87 overall at leasg

I couldn't even imagine the devastation Floyd Patterson would have caused in the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions. Honestly Patterson could have been one of the best p4p boxers ever if he competed in those weight classes, maybe even welterweight.

For Patterson, this fight was the triumph of hope over experience.
George Foreman said that Liston was the only man who stood up to him. That is b.s. Ron Lyle and Joe Frazier certainly showed no fear of him even though both ultimately lost to George. As for Ali, you could have had the Rumble in the Jungle inside a telephone booth and Ali would still have kicked Foreman's ass.

Is it just me or is this fight like an exact replica of George Foreman vs Sonny Liston? Patterson the relentless bob-and-weave infighter like Frazier who suffers plenty knockdowns but continues to rise again, against Liston the giant with formidable punching power like Foreman (his sparring partner btw). Both fights were a rematch as well

Liston wanted to fight Frazier but they wanted a big guarantee!
Light heavyweights only went to 175 at the time, so I don't know if Patterson could have fought at that weight. No cruiserweights then. He was made to order for Liston, and only Ali had the skills to stop him. Every one else was scared to death of the big black bear.

Carlos Pagador Patterson's problem wasn't his weight, it was his chin. He could wallop- he could hit harder than Ali -he just couldn't take it.

Patterson probably would have been a good light-heavyweight. He was a good man, had fast hands, and a pretty good punch. But he had the proverbial glass chin. Had no business in there with the real heavyweights.

frazier mcrae What part of the comment did you disagree with? You say he had the stature of a light heavy and I said he'd have been a good light heavy. I also said he had a glass chin, and heavyweights don't do well with that characteristic. He fought at about 185 lbs; should have done like wrestlers and starved himself down to 175. No Sonny Listons or Ingemarr Johansens in that weight class.

Seeing Liston do this to Patterson makes me think he would've slaughtered Tyson if they both fought each other in their primes.

Mike was way faster, tougher, his speed plus his punching power would really be a challenge to Sonny

Replay of the first fight basically and no marciano was smart he knew he was too old to come back against liston he knew he was past it he almost came out of retirement to fight ingo even got in shape and knew he didnt have the hunger anymore so he stayed retired rocky was tough in his day in his prime he would of beat both patterson and ingo i dont know about liston though but marciano never wanted to fight patterson or liston not due to fear but age a bad back too many wars in the ring he knew he was past his peak as i said before he briefly wanted to fight ingo but knew he didnt have it. anymore

Patterson had as glass jaw, but refused to move his head -- just stood right in front of Liston in that signature peekaboo stance that seemed to be totally ineffective against Liston's huge right uppercuts. With giant fists and uber long reach Liston simply had too many tools and way too much power for the mediocre and relatively puny Patterson, who had the rep of being very quick handed, but sure didn't look like it versus Sonny.

Clay (Ali) missed his prediction by one round. He beat Sonny in 7.
Liston beat himself. Misjudged ali and took training easy. A 100% liston could have destroyed anybody at that time. No insult to ali though he earned that victory. Its liston fault himself

You mean Sonny allowed him to win in 7. He pulled his punches. He couldn't dive early because he was so heavily favored people would have known it was fixed.

Floyd Patterson was a skilled and solid boxer known for his gentlemanly nature and exciting trilogy with Ingemar Johansson. However his two first round defeats to Liston didn't exactly help his choir boy reputation...
Last knockdown was unnecessary punishment... he never regained his senses from the one prior. Referees were so lax back in this era.
Met Ron Lyle in vegas once espn fight night[ a guy who decked foreman good]lyle was another big bad hombre,i assure you.These guys look much bigger and badder face to face obviously.Of course all three of these guy probably put on an xtra 25 solid pounds between fights,so you are looking at pure intimidation,add shades leather jackets ,boots,lyle looked like a bad dream face to face.Great guy i might add.

And worse for Marciano-Patterson had longer reach than Marciano and couldn't tie Liston up-Patterson had better defense than Marciano and he couldn't avoid the freight train that 215lbs Liston was and Patterson weighed more than Marciano did and still got bullied-the advent of big fast young heavyweights is why Marciano retired!

Liston during that time was considered invincible. But in truth Sonny was closer to 40 years old in this fight, and his skills although fearsome, you can see he was bothered by quick movement. When he fought Ali,many times it looked like he was in slow motion. Liston had the biggest fists of any hwt, and those HAMHOCKS hurt you when he landed clean. I still believe in a show down with Big George Liston gets K.O'd. I believe also Tyson would be to quick for Sonny, and K.O him as well.
Liston official dob was 8 May 1932, making him 31 at the time of this fight. There is some debate about his dob though, and it has been claimed that he was born in 1930, though Liston was happy with the official date. At the most he was 33, and 34 when he fought Ali . . .

Quick movement disrupted his timing, but Liston would've figured out Ali after five rounds if the fight had been on the up and up, which it wasn't.

If Floyd Patterson were a little bigger with a stronger jaw, could he be beaten even as a heavyweight? I wonder. Ali said Floyd Patterson was the most skilled boxer he ever fought.
I didn't know Ali said that about Patterson, but it's quite a tribute. Had Floyd fought as a light heavy weight he probably could have owned that title as long as he wanted. He was just too small as a heavyweight.
If Patterson was a little bigger and with a stronger jaw, he still would have lost to Ali and Liston.

Probably true, even to my thinking. Just about everyone else lost to Floyd. He knocked poor Henry Cooper right out. Henry gave Ali a hard time. I liked Floyd as a boxer, and even more as a person. Joe Frazier and others spoke so well of Floyd as a manly gentleman.

Patterson did beat pretty much everyone else but none of them were close to Liston or Ali's level.

-both his body and his mind.
Sonny could be a head case in and out of the ring,
and might have wilted under Rocky's unrelenting attack.
Though Liston outweighed Marciano,
Rocky was one of the hardest punchers of all time,
and was kind of hard to put down (and keep down).
wheelinthesky300 No way dude! Marciano is from a different era. The heavyweights of the 60's/70's would have been too big, stong, and fast for Marciano. Not to take anything away from his greatness but it was just a different era.
D. Jones - Agreed. Marciano was tiny compared to Liston. It's fantasy for Rocky fans to imagine he would have survived against Liston. He was also too slow to cope with the faster fighters of the 60s and later. Great in his era but wouldn't even have been ranked in later decades, especially the 70s.

Most human beings, your reach is within 3" of your height. If 6 feet tall (72 inches), reach will be 69 to 75 inches for most people. Pattersons reach was 1 inch less than his height. That's on the low side and not ideal for boxing. Liston's reach was a staggering 11 inches longer than his height. That's crazy. Definitely an advantage he had over Patterson, and would have had over Marciano, whose reach was about 3 inches less than his height.
Patterson was a under developed version of Tyson. The head bopping reminds me of Tyson so much
They had the same trainer and held their gloves in the same way but their fighting styles were very different.

It was over fast. that right uppercut early on pretty much set the tone. Patterson had guts but there wasn't much he could do here
