Billy, I love this episode! Even back in 2007 it was a topical story. Who hasn’t been stuck in a traffic jam on a motorway/freeway for hours on end, going nowhere? Imagine being stuck, enclosed in a metal coffin (with recycled air) for 24 YEARS? This story is so full of hope for the characters in it, with the Doctor and the Face of Boe saving the day and with a nod back to an old 2nd Doctor Who enemy from 1967. What’s not to like if you’re a fully paid up Whovian member, right? No spoilers, but you will be drip fed more information about the Time Lords and the Time War throughout this season and beyond. Again, no spoilers, but the Doctor meeting the Face of Boe for this, the third and last time (as he said it would be) is very important to this season. You’re right, the stakes have risen for this season, budget wise and story wise, and those stakes rise even higher from episode 8 onwards to the finale (not that there isn’t some good stories before episode 8) and Martha is most definitely the new companion, as you will find out soon. Loving your reactions to this season and can’t wait to relive these upcoming stories with you. Best wishes from the UK. 🇬🇧
Martha IS very much THE companion of Season 3. This season starts a bit slow but with the next ones, a two parter, it starts getting better and then the end block Id say from episode 8 on is real great. Epsode 10 is THE highlight, so look forward to that.
this is a great episode to show how open-minded inclusive the show is . this episode features both political sides getting along in peace . you have some characters that are same sex and some characters that are religious to Narrow it down a bit the episode is based on a central political idea . fun fact the song the city is singing when the Doctor talks about the war to Martha is a real religious hymn called abide with me written by William Henry Monk a priest in the uk . he wrote the song a couple of weeks before his death the lyrics explained that he is ready to face death and move on to the next life . funny enough the priest actually lived in my town and because of that my local church chimes the song Every 8:00 at night
I think this episode aired in the US the weekend the last Harry Potter book was released. I remember taking a break from reading it to watch (probably on VHS that I taped the night before when I was in line to get my book.) I’m not positive if that’s all true, but those two things are intertwined in my aging memory. But I do remember enjoying this episode. Especially Murray Gold’s fantastic music. The next few episodes are not my favorites, but I’ll watch your reactions to get you the views. But from then on, you’re in for the best run of eps in the entire series, in my opinion, that carries you through the 4th season. I’m looking forward to seeing your reactions.
When you get through as many Doctors and Companions as we have you'll get use to it and becomes the norm after awhile that's the tradition of "Dr. Who" Doctors and companions come and go that's how the show kept running for 61 years and that's always exciting. Rose Tyler's story is very much wrapped up and done. Martha Jones is the regular companion for Series 3. Catherine Tate who plays Donna Noble was set up as a guest companion for the Christmas special only as Christmas specials are pretty much their own seperate thing from the regular series. The Doctor will never get a girlfriend because he's not interested in that kind of thing, he's 900 years old and he's got bigger and better things to do with his time like saving the universe from monsters and aliens and he's a-sexual exploring the universe is his love life.
But there’s also a tendency for past characters to find there way back in some way. Sarah Jane Smith in season 2 was a great example. I’m not saying it will happen again but if past is prologue… 😉 I also think it’s a bit of an exaggeration to say the Doctor has *no* interest in relationships/sex; it’s clearly way down on his priority list-having interesting friends to travel with (and show off to) is far more satisfying for him. But inter-species sex is not his goto. 🤷♂️
A redemption arc for the Cat people medicos? Well, at least for Sister Hayes. Can we pause and reflect on the idiocy of re-entering a motorway to travel ten miles over 6 years? (When in college, I’d frequently walk the three miles each way to & from the campus). They could’ve walked to wherever they were going, in a few hours or a day or a couple of days. The initial act of saving a population by sealing the motorway so that everyone who happened to be IN there couldn’t leave is understandable BUT new drivers entering breaks quarantine. It’s inconsistent with the premise.
The Macra are technically a deep cut from the classic series. Before this episode, their only onscreen appearance was a 1967 story called The Macra Terror, which is basically lost media (There is an animated reconstruction, but there wasn't in 2007 when this episode aired). In that story, they're an actual presence and threat like the Doctor describes. It really feels like the writer just needed a monster, but didn't care which, so he picked an obscure one from a missing story from the 60's as a joke, claiming they'd devolved to get around the fact that they're behaving totally differently from their first appearance.
That’s not true. In the original story, “The Macra Terror,” the Macra fed off of the gases that was generated by the people at the camp, so for them being underneath thousands and thousands of cars belching out petrol/gas fumes 24/7 for the past 23 years, must have been manna from heaven for all of them. Using the Macra for this story was ideal. Here, using CGI, we only needed a presence from them, as the Macra in the original story were massive and unwieldily on the Doctor Who set.
Heads up. I heard that in Great Britain, if you do a reverse peace sign, with your fingernails showing, that is an equivalent to a middle finger. This may be a reason tge Dr. WHO audience has dwindled.. 🤔
While it's true that this gesture is the equivalent to a f you in the UK. I can also assure you that it has absolutely nothing to do with any dwindling numbers.
Kind of. Two fingers is more of a general f you, one is more of a ruder up your a. British swearing and gestures are complicated, so good luck researching that 😂
I heard the old-timey origin of the “reverse peace sign” (as an offensive gesture in the UK) is that it’s the hand position required for shooting an enemy with a bow and arrow (the figurative equivalent of wishing death upon someone). That said, I’m American, so this could just be some story they tell tourists 🤷♀️
@@cometgirl217Curious. Were you aware that the origins of the middle finger gesture (flipping someone the bird-curious expression) comes from the time when long bows were the most effective weapon of war (for the troops). To use one you *must* have a functional third finger. Captured enemies might have their middle finger amputated (er, rudely chopped off) making them unfit soldiers-and sparing those who captured them the cost & trouble of imprisonment & food. Render them unfit and turn them out. Raising the middle finger was a way to say “see? I’m still intact and can shoot you”. That’s the origin… and as I understand it it was an English/French thing (always fighting…)
Personally, the first half of series 3 is one of the weakest stretches of episodes in the Russel T Davies run (series 1-4 + specials). Not bad but nothing suuuper exciting and the next few are a bit rough, this one is the best of the first half imo. But after that, I would argue the second half (from 42 onwards) is one of best and most compelling runs of episodes in the entire show. Especially excited to see what you think of the Human Nature/Family of Blood story!
Just get through the next few mediocre episodes and you've hit the gold mine of Doctor who, 2nd half of season 3 onwards is probably the reason why people love the show.

Rose Tyler and Mickey Smith and Jackie Tyler are not in Doctor Who series 3 and because 10th Doctor have Martha Jones
