    It is so amazing the amount of work they put into getting all of that ore out. thank you for documenting and keeping this piece of history alive

    Great video as always!
    Really like the still shots,you really feel the atmosphere!
    Some parts of that mine look pretty sketchy!( rocks being suspended in mid air by the bolts?!!) love it!
    Thanks again!

      Yep this mine is not particularly safe, the upper levels are even worse! Thanks for watching!

    You need to take a UV lamp with you! That makes everything a lot more interesting!

      I agree! That and a camera stabilizer would be good to have. Thanks for watching!

    Interesting layout of the tunnels side by side, not seen that technique over here. I believe the red water pools is sulphuric acid, I might be wrong, but best avoid them, it might sting a little. :)

      Cornish Mine Explorer Yeah I wore a respirator in this one because I didn’t want to breath any acid vapors, etc. nasty stuff!

    How in the world do you keep track of where you've been in the tunnels so you can find your way out?

    • @MinesoftheWest
      @MinesoftheWest  6 років тому +3

      It seems a lot more complex in the videos because I don't document every single minute of it. If you're there in person it's pretty easy to remember where you have and haven't been. Though finding a series of junctions can be pretty confusing. This mine, for the most part, is just two parallel drift tunnels, not many four-way junctions.

    There are many mines in NW Montana. I wonder if they are explorable.

    Probably a LOT of heavy metals in that crazy water.

    This is amazing. Do you ever take any safety gear like oxygen or gas masks? I went inside some mines at Bohemia (helena and morning star) recently to make a gold mine video. One of them was sketchy and seemed like the fumes could be harmful.

    • @ryana6961
      @ryana6961 6 років тому +1

      When his partner is visible you can see he's wearing a gas mask. You can also hear his gas mask when he's breathing too. It's definitely advised to take a gas monitor with you when going into mines. Be careful, lower oxygen levels and toxic gases can quickly kill you.

      @@ryana6961 thanks dude. Crazy stuff gotta be careful. Voiceover i get it. I thought he was talking on site at first. So cool.

    • @MinesoftheWest
      @MinesoftheWest  6 років тому +1

      The Wildhog Tunnel in Bohemia has low oxygen, so it's pretty common. In my opinion, a gas monitor is a must for abandoned mine exploration. Also I do wear a respirator in some cases like in the video, but not always. Stay safe!

    The parallel tunnel thing is interesting. Never seen that before.

    • @MinesoftheWest
      @MinesoftheWest  6 років тому

      Yes that is a unique feature to this mine. Usually modern mines follow existing drifts and widen them to accommodate larger machinery. In this case, the modern workings were driven from scratch right next to the old ones. So the parallel drift is from the 1940s and 50s and the main drift is from the 1970s.

    They have what looks like a baseboard heater on the floor of the office. Is that unusual?

    • @spamanator666
      @spamanator666 6 років тому

      That was part of the later military operation. Are you wondering if it is hydronic (water) system? It appears to be electric baseboard. You can see all over they had 110v at least, possibly 220v judging by the size of some of those cable runs. So it wouldn't be a real problem putting in the electric baseboard.

    There's a lot of iron oxide in that mine with all that yellow-orange deposit on the floor in parts and that red-maroon-colored water. Also it looks like that equipment and those artifacts in that mine are from the 80's or 90's. It must have closed down during that time frame. I think that clicking is a loose-fitting part on yiour camera. Ii's a good thing. It actually adds a feeling of reality and originality to your video. And I can hear your nearby partner breathing through his respirator too More reality and originality :). BTW, can you date the year of that ICBM site feasability research project? History of that subject shows in general that such was likely in the early 1960's when the Titan 1, the first version of ICBM that was the weapon of the day. And BTW, what make and model of floodlight are you and your partner up front out ahead of you using? And what is the lumens rating? Very nice wide and long-range throw illumination!

      Seems to be related to JO 199025 in the 1980's. Objective was to store nuclear weapons underground and in the event of an attack TBMs would dig their way out of the rock to the surface and then launch weapons in response. It's a bit nutty but it seems like the US govt may have awarded contracts for actually building it. Not entirely sure what the freon-filled devices are but there was a contract awarded to test the feasibility of communications with the system - they could well be a tuned geophone array for receiving signals through rock. Either that or it's some sort of more general seismic study.

    You should leave a cheap mp3 player at end of a tunnel bend triggered by next explorers IR, that would play some horrid evil growling chewing-narling sound!
