Everytime Saka went on the outside of his marker and did a cutback, I screamed at Kane not being in a more central position holding up the CB. This guy has a big frame and a strong body, but he kept hanging around the diagonal front of the CB, making the cutback harder. For the love of god, block the CB, scruff it up a little.
Let watkins on some time lol. Bro is literally just wasted on the bench. I don't think kane is really a cb hold up magnet type of guy; that's more of a Haaland/Lukaka thing.
I think I've worked out Southgate's tactics. It is called Repetition Compulsion. Where people unconsciously get themselves into contexts that re-enact their traumatic past. He is tactically setting England up to make it as likely as possibly that we will draw games and end up in shoot outs, thereby, giving him the opportunity to work through his Euro '96 penalty trauma.
i agree to a certain extent. i beleive hes putting the players though a tough time to give them more mental strength and esperience to cope with what he couldnt as a player. southgate is smarter than people think. he is more of psycological person. having first hand experience hes probably the best person to it.
Joking aside, you've got a point. The current lot of England players are excellent, but they're not comfortable playing retro football. What they are comfortable with is playing on the front foot; something which Southgate does not appear to have in his locker. I'm half expecting to see Southgate playing a back three and a sweeper in the Semi's.
@@Aircool212 southgate doesn’t have anything in his locker and saying he has any tactical knowledge is disrespectful to tactics. he doesn’t know what he’s doing and he just picks players and says try your best lads

TBF it's slightly misleading because the reason Kanes touch map is so deep is because the ball was getting booted to him there constantly, so the majority of his touches were headers in the middle

@@ruzziasht349 I guess 'no one seems to be mentioning' that he 'nearly missed' because, you know, he scored a pen in a Euro quarter final. Forgive my tone, but I guess it's hard to say that without looking like a bit of a dick, so nobody is saying it.
I'll probably get some stick for this, but you have to give the management props for the pens. I've never been more comfortable watching england take pens, and I know there were great penalty takers in there but it was clear they were all using a process , slowing it down and executing - they looked very prepared. For someone who grew up on England losing by pens since 1990, it was wonderful to see and Management should get some credit for it.
England literaelly never practiced pens until the 00s, we were stuck in the dark ages compared to the rest of the world. That's all that has changed. If it wasn't for Akanji's awful penalty the Swiss were in it.
I think the one element of Southgate’s management that has been consistently good is his man management. Yes we are tactically inept and play terrorist football, but I still feel this England squad plays like a team, not like a group of individual superstars. That’s not easy to do. I can’t believe I’m actually watching England come back from a deficit two games in a row and then win on penalties. I genuinely cannot imagine that happening even a decade ago. There’s some real grit and winners mentality with our performances this euros, even if we haven’t looked good 😭
Tbh I think it’s also a system issue, I don’t think if you play Watkins or Tony there, much changes other than pressing ability and slightly more runs into the box, that solo striker position in this system is bad…need multiple runners into the box, maybe 2 up top would work better with Kane in behind with that passing ability.
I agree . It’s 1000 thousand times better than the punditry of ex players . It goes to show the IQ of players in general and it doesn’t matter if you have played for smart managers . 😂
Special mention to Konsa, thought he was excellent! On the other hand, Kane was very poor throughout, offering nothing in attack and generally looking laboured.
This whole "laboured" look is how he walks around the pitch his whole career. He preserves energy and doesn't run down rabbit holes. Tactically the games aren't playing to his strengths...but he has the quality to be clutch... but Bellingham feels like the weak link imho

@@StimParavaneneeds to put himself in the right positions for that to happen. Either play him as a super sub or give him Toney or Watkins to bounce off
we are getting virtually no balls in the box. That said, Kane often isn't in the optimum position in the box for a cross. Saka cut one back for a tap-in and Kane wasn't there. For some reason Kane thought being on the edge of the area was the best position to be in.... it's amazing he scores so many goals when he lacks the common sense to position himself for the best opportunity to score.
Its obviously southgates fault kane is playing like this, he doesn't for bayern. Southgate is telling him to play like this and at the end of the say kane doesnt get a say for the system
Yep, Kane is non-existent and Trippier on the left who only gets forward for the long cross field ball. Leaves only Saka hugging the right. Foden still getting loads of stick but along with mainoo is absolutely critical in us building any possession. Posted elsewhere what changes I'd like to see, but basically Kane and Trippier have to go now as minimum. Walker as well on current form I think, with Guehi and Konsa his speed is no longer critical to our defending.
@@hothead5395it’s not Southgate’s fault, Kane never used to be like this for England either. He’s clearly injured and it’s affecting his play. What is Southgate’s fault is refusing to bench him even when he’s not fit
@@user-ed7et3pb4o Thing is though Kane has never been much of a runner or good at playing off the last man and occupying defenders so literally the only reason he starred is because Southgatebsaw him as undroppable. Since Kane did not fit what was needed of him at all. End of the day imo atleastnthe system should come first if there's someone who clearly does not fit it and you have someone who does. Watkins does everything very very well that Southgate wanted Kane to do in this game but didn't start him.
To me it looks like Kane's continual dropping back is also partly to blame for Foden and Bellingham iffy performances. They don't have the threat of a forward pass to keep the central defenders away to allow space to threaten a dribble.
You've hit the nail on the head. As the video, says as the game went on with no forward outlet Switzerland got on top and that pressure converted into a goal (via pressure plus mistake from pressure and odds increase from pressure increasing chances). So England did not control the game, did not make sufficient good chances, brought on pressure that saw them going out with 15 odd minutes of normal time remaining and again as the video says, throwing on sheer talent and gettting one piece of skill to produce an equalizer and that's the entire game. I'd argue Trippier, Kane and Foden are a waste in the team. I would have said Saka as well until in this match he was crossing from the right and holding the ball on the middle right and defending so contributing the most almost. So keep him. But Shaw on instead of Trippier looks so much stronger. Kane as video said did so little so Watkins pace and energy is worth feeding and I'd start Palmer instead of Foden.
@@commentarytalk1446I remember watching either extra time or second half, saka had so much space he looked like he had a restraining order on the defenders yet no one would see him for a pass; foden also seemed to be doing better than the last few games, for me it’s Kane, walker (although he was electric the first game), trippier and the lack of passing forward. Trent not starting as RWB is criminal and adjust the back 5 (Ugh 🙄) as needed, then swap Kane for someone who will actually go deep instead of being behind foden and Bellingham as when they have the ball they have to pass back as no one is behind them (or should pass to saka when he had space) Or just keep the system of the first 4 games, swap foden for Gordon and Kane for someone else, and sub Bellingham for foden at half time (or other way round) We have a shit load of good players and we’re not using them.
@@meirl5700I think going back to a back 4 and playing Trent RB and saka RW works the best. It'll recreate the relationship Trent and Salah have at Liverpool and if we play a defensive LB (Gomez, walker, Konsa) we can shift to a back three when Trent drifts forward or infield.
@@goodman4093 I bloody hope so. We would all prefer quality performances but I dont care how we do it. Not sure we are playing well.enough to beat Holland but it's something to look forward too.
Really enjoy your commentary and analysis - thank you for putting this together. We all have opinions and 'thoughts' but you use data to illustrate your points and that means you're much more that the 'bloke down the pub'. I guess we can all see that things are not right but the TV pundits usually use little phrases that make them sound as if they might have some secret inner knowledge without explaining what they mean (Micha Richards - I'm thinking of you). I've learnt so much more about tactics from these short analytical videos - and it's making a big change to how much I enjoy the match Bob - 70 years old - I remember 1966 well but have now found a new way to think about footie and am loving it.
I’m pleased for Saka, he’s tried all tournament and deserved his goal. Kane should be paid in buttons for that performance. His lack of movement was absolutely disgusting at times.
Massive credit to all 5 penalty takers, who delivered under pressure. If anyone watched Copa America, you would have seen Messi miss his penalty in the shoot out against Ecuador, when he attempted a Panenka and it hit the bar.
Genius as ever Adam. One thing you didn't comment on was the brilliant Jujitsu Gareth did to force Harry's substitution. I think he must have been following your analysis on that point at least. :)
That extra time average position is just the 5 of them deciding to play rondo while the other 5 are not allowed to join. Two pairs of them started chatting out of boredom while Stones is obviously the unpopular kid. Can I have your job now?😂😂😂
Mark Goldbridge was right - every time England conceded a goal, it triggers the highly skilled/elite English players to dump the tactics that Southgate instructed them to do and tried to win the game by relying on their individual skills, experience and intuition. In other words for the most part, Southgate's tactics have very little to do on why they're still in the tournament.
If they're good, they're good together. if they're sh1t3, they're sh1te together. You chose freaking Goldbridge out of all people and took his words as gospel.
@@hyywe240let's give credit where it's due - that penalty shoot out set up was executed well. But it could be because they drilled it a lot in practice. When it comes to Southgate's adaptability to his opponents, he's obviously not the smartest. TAA and Tony should start vs the Dutch.
did we watch the same match? Shaw made a couple of crucial interceptions when he came on but as the game progress him and Eze were leaving huge gaps on the left for Fabian Schär to run into and recieve the ball. If he'd had a better delivery or shot then England would be out.

@@eddo8762 true. Would’ve liked to see Mitchell in the squad but c’est la vie. I think you give Shaw more minutes though either starting or off the bench and at least the left side will function for a portion of the game lol
You nailed it on an earlier video. Without Gordon (and with Foden) the team is totally unbalanced and creates nothing. Only individual moments of quality have kept us in it. My starting XI JP, LS, MG, JS, TAA - BS, DR, KM, JB, AG - IT
Great analysis as ever, thank you. One comment; Mainoo still looks like our best player on and off the ball. I wish the team would play through him more. He's always available, making space for others too, and is so good on the ball. Overall the first half (despite not having a striker at all) was actually decent.
There’s no guarantee he makes the penalty either. Keep him on but tell him that he can’t keep dropping so deep and he actually has to behave like a number 9
They need him off and bring him on in last 15 minutes, he as probably been the worse CF this tournament, he as done virtually nothing. England should maybe run with 2 strikers to give more of option up front since Kane can't open up or manage to make good space to get the ball around the box
Two things have infuriated me this tournament (well maybe more than two). 1. Pickford kicking long when there's an easy pass, and when that easy pass is eventually taken we don't trust the midfielder to receive the ball turn and break the line. 2. Harry Kane. We are crying out for a 9 that will stretch the play. He's like a statue. Yesterday he was defending in his own box coming out with the ball with no one in front of him to pass to (obviously). Get up the pitch man!
He actually make a couple key defensive interceptions so I will give it to him. I think he is suffering from playing without any natural winger. The problem has always been the LB. England players stopped passing to trippier as well if you noticed.
I cannot believe what happened in extra time. England had hardly any possession after the Swiss kicked off the first half and kept the ball. The English kicked off the second half and had a chance to control the game. What did they do? It went straight back to Pickford and he launched it to the Swiss and lost possession. Why do you do that from kick off? In extra time? Some of the decision making on the pitch is flat out stupid. Edit: add to that Pickford had a list of where the penalties would go on his water bottle and didn't follow it! He's not following instructions.
Wow, at last, a very intelligent, very incisive read of the game. I usually only find the hotheads repeating the tabloid blurb. This is a very cool look at the data, and you made it fun. Thanks man. Subscribed.
I’m old enough to remember the 1966 World Cup and the controversy over dropping England’s talisman, Jimmy Greaves, in favour of Geoff Hurst - and we all know the result of that decision. I’d prefer to see Watkins and/or Toney starting instead of Kane and/or Foden. Look at the centre-backs that the Netherlands have and ask what type of centre forward they would like to play against - one that doesn’t play as a centre forward except for free-kicks and corners and they’re big enough, and have enough nouse, to defend against Kane.
Saka on the right and Gordon on the left would presumably create more danger as sides would have their attention split? At the point where Switzerland made changes to deal with Saka the stage was perfectly set for Gordon to come on and terrorise from the left.
The fact that Shaw played and could be a starter against the Netherlands we really need to start Toney or Watkins, Kane is holding this team back, he's normally fantastic at holding the ball up or linking up play but he's doing none of that, now we don't have the pace of Sterling and Rashford on the wings Kane just doesn't fit this team at all and i think that's why Bellingham and Foden haven't been creating chances, Watkins would suit both of them so much better
From what ive seen he's on his own, he's being closed down like crazy, marked and nobody is around due to the formation and defensive style. He's a good player, not been his best this tourney but he needs support, he needs setting up when the opposition is constantly on him. It might be better to put toney on to start and pull kane on in the second half to work his magic when the other team is tired both mentally and physically.
@@martinholden6214 That's a pretty good shout, bring Kane's physicality on in the latter half of the game when the opposition defence is more ragged. It might also cause him to step up coz his ego will inevitably get hit from becoming second choice, giving him a point to prove. On the other hand, if hes swapped with Watkins or Toney, not sure either would be happy with being subbed off. Maybe Watkins is more reliable but Toney is an ego
Foden has the ball for 5 games, but he can not have 1 pass like Kane did to Trippier against Slovakia. Kane plays bad, that's true, but he donest waste any chance in this tornament. I dont know why English people being so tolerant of Foden. But I toltaly agree if you have to start Foden, just bench Kane. @@yuandora1064 IIRC, Foden is our only left-footed player on the pitch when Shaw is out. This may be why Southgate keeps him on, for talent and balance.

Well I'm glad someone said it, because I didn't have a clue what that was and it still confuses me how he doesn't utilise the whole squad , leaving Toney, Watkins and Palmer on the bench and then playing Kane, who had zero effect, all had hardly any shots on goal and then listening to Lineker and Richards go on about how much better it was, crazy! Clearly Southgate has no clue what he's doing and is just playing the same big players game after game, ignoring any advice anyone gives him just makes it even more concrete.
If koeman has the balls to unleash both Frimpong and Dumfries at the right hand side to target trippier it would be a disaster. I wouldn't even be surprised if Southgate go for Gomez for the next match
We had more shots, more corners, more possession, more touches in the opposition box, and more successful passes. And we won. But we were “utterly minging”
@@sensibility1174is because it's dross and tedious. We spent the best part of every game without a single shot on target. You're raving about how great Switzerland are, contrast the players versus the performances of both sides in this tournament. One team was doing much better with much less, do the math.
No, the pundits just have a more rounded view than the average UA-cam commentator. Rather than "Only 1 goal = bad", they look at the performance compared to previous ones. Any smart person knows it's never gonna just suddenly go from being Stoke City to being Barcelona. The players obviously played a lot better in this match, not in terms of goals, but in terms of drive, passing, grit. They focused on the positives instead of droaning on about negatives. Football isn't a simple game and as former players themselves they know that. They're not just armchair managers that swear we'd suddenly be amazing if Southgate was out. Honestly it's really fucking depressing that even when we're winning, no ones fucking happy. We also wouldn't have this expectation if it weren't for Gareth, he's given us that expectation by giving us 2 semi finals and 1 final.
I was going mental watching this match. Saka absolutely tearing apart the Swiss left multiple times and having absolutely nobody to cross to because Harry was too busy chatting to John stones. Thank god he gave up and decided to do it himself! Kane needs sent home, never mind putting him on the bench.
Hopefully next game Shaw can start over Trippier as the LWB. I appreciate everything Trippier has done for England, playing in an unnatural position and trying his best but it isn’t good enough now for where we are in the competition. As soon as Shaw was on we finally had that much needed balance. Also we need to be much more confident with quick passing on the ball. Whenever an England player receives the ball there’s always this hesitation that causes them to slow the pace down further and then eventually back pass. We need to push the ball forward more than back if we want to create more chances. We also need to start thinking about dropping Kane. Ik he’s our top goal scorer and all but I just don’t think he’s match fit or even in it mentally. Saka created two big chances in the box and where was Kane. He was at the edge of the box jogging in instead of busting his gut to get into the necessary position of a striker. He also keeps on dropping way too deep still which is why he’s never in the position we need him to be. Plus with his slow pace it’s just never gonna work. We have Toney and Watkins in the bench where they will stay in their forward position and will make them runs and presses needed. As for Foden. He’s still not able to produce anything even when he was finally in a 10 position which is really unfortunate. He’s not entirely to blame as our striker was never in position to receive the ball from him but the amount of times Foden lost possession is not good enough. Foden is here because of his technicality and his ability to keep the ball in tight spaces but it’s been non-existent this entire tournament so far. He needs to wake up.
I cannot tell you what joy you’ve brought to my tournament football viewing! Right down to counting the seconds before Trent A-A took that lovely penalty. On we go!
Toney absolutely should start the semi final. He's done more than Kane has in his tiny cameos. No look penalty, ice in the man's veins and he feels he has something to prove with Southgate inexplicably making him ride the pine.
I was screaming at Kane to attack the front post every time Saka got the ball!! Even if it went past him, it would have created the space for Bellingham to attack the penalty spot and I guarantee we would have scored sooner.
Kane & Foden looked knackered. Their body is like...no pickle juice is working, I need to take a nap. Bench em, start with Gordon, Watkins or Toney... we will see.. Was it Foden who didnt wanna take a pen? He had no more in the tank.... Goal keepers have always had that list... Which doesnt always workout. Wish theyd just go with how they see it....
@RMo16 😂😂 Only the losing team will describe it as such, England have done so in the past. Glen probably got that vibe from Eileen. Knowing how to take a penalty definitely tips in favour and a good goal keeper knows how to read players, goal keepers list doesn't always pan out. Its known that professional goalkeepers dive about 220 milliseconds before the pen taker kicked the ball. Anyone that plays football practice penalties and improve their skill, tricks, and strategies. BTW not knocking Southgate.. I don't refer to Southgate.
I went so mental after seeing Trippier still on the left that I went into another room to calm down and missed the first 7 minutes. But like Adam, I had to swallow that anger when I saw Saka skinning his opponents. Then I shouted at Walker's continually piss poor passing and the lack of anyone getting into the Swiss penalty box in open play during 90 minutes. Ok, Kane did drop back and make one great tackle in the second half as the Swiss got on top, but he failed to clear it up the pitch to himself. Anyway, for the next match, same formation, start with Shaw (PLEASE!), drop Foden for Palmer, Walker for TAA (not going to happen) and order Kane to be in the box when Saka or Shaw have the ball wide.
I think that England are creating an aura of invincibility which is creating doubt in the minds of the opposing team. This idea that no matter how well you play and how poorly England play, England will always win.
Great video Adam, very interesting and entertaining, many thanks really looking forward to your analysis of Spurs at the beginning of the season and whether or not the ideas will be tweaked by the end of the season once players are more familiar with Ange's tactics. Thanks again.
The tactic employed by Mr Southgate after the Swiss goal was clearly relationism. You overload one side of the pitch with randomness to open space on the other. It worked beautifully. The man’s a genius.
😂 That’s Switzerlands tactic. Watch any analysis on them. They copied Switzerlands approach and looked better than all tournament before. Give Yakin and Xhaka Credit for that
Thank you. The only reference Ive seen in 'football media' today that highlights Kane's lack of dynamism and alertness in the box. Desperate stuff. Almost like he actively doesn't want to involve himself. I've been up there as one of Kane's biggest advocates for years. But he tests my patience every tournament. This one he's pushed me over the edge.
Another great analysis, way more insight about what went on than those various ex-players and tslking heads. Plus a great finish when you got into the perfect position to get onto that bhaji coming in from the right and put it away !!! (Hope Harry Kane was watching)
There are many things I can say negatively about England in this tournament , but one thing is that Switzerland beat Italy easily, so for England going into this game and stopping that momentum the Swiss had of beating a good side means England must be doing something right, even if it is boring football.
This Italy team was far from being a good side though. Half of the players that won in 2021 were not in the squad. No Verratti, Insigne, Spinazzola. Chiellini and Bonucci retired. Calafiori - their best player in this tournament was suspended. Overall, a shell of the championship winning side in 2021. They didn't even qualify for 2022 ffs.
@@Uzaairthey still made it through this far and the Swiss embarrassed them more than the other teams. The Swiss also knocked France out in the last euros and took Spain to pens, they’re no mugs.
I do think the value of England having high-impact subs on the bench is massive in international tournaments, it’s just trying to get the management to play them early enough. And 100% certain that at least one of Palmer, Gordon and Toney should be in the starting 11.
Kane has been bad every game honestly if Southgate just ignores this and keeps playing Kane every game we are doomed to penalties or going home, please please give either Watkins or Tony a decent run out so we dont have all our out of date fat eggs in one Kane shaped basket.

hard to believe that you are one of many analysts who are missing the stark reality that Cole Palmer (when he is finally brought on by Southgate) is the main reason why Englad start to be more potent in attack, He is always attack minded, rarely loses the ball, can track back and win the ball and generally demonstates class as he floats around the pitch. If he starts we win well against anybody. If not we struggle again.
You forgot to mention that absolutely dire corner that went straight back to Pickford within something like 20 or 30 seconds. Only England could go to all that effort to gain that territory and almost immediately squander it. And these are supposed to be elite players? Embarrassing.
So, what is Kane offering the team? If Toni is at least as good at penalties and more mobile he should start. Southgate probably doesn't want to destroy the confidence of his captain but Kane is basically a passenger at this point
He creates space thats what southgate tells him to do. Southgate tells him to play like this. Kane is playing to the system doing as he's told like every player, its a system issue
Kane is looking alarmingly out of sorts. Whether it’s an injury he’s carrying, exhaustion, or just nerves, I don’t know, but he’s our weakest link. I cannot understand why Southgate isn’t starting Watkins. He’s younger, fitter, fearless and will make the runs that will make things happen. Give Kane 15/20 minutes at the end if we need additional goal threat, but persisting with him from kick off and just hoping that *this* is the game he finds his form is nuts.
The first half was very good. 2nd half the Switzerland manager changed some things and did some subs. Southgate in game management is terrible. He has no clue
Kane's back injury is being underplayed. Tuchel stated back in May "He can't travel. He was already at the limit in Madrid. He had a complete blockade in his back, it's gotten worse and bothers him in everyday movements" it was reported he had been playing with injections. He could be playing with a herniated or ruptured disk, which might explain why he was ducking out of headers and not making any sprints against the Swiss. It would explain why some of the pundits turned on him in the first game? Why Toney is annoyed at getting 2 minutes against Slovakia? Kane needs to admit he's not fit enough and/or Southgate needs to call it out and drop him....
For this match England went to the formation that Palace uses under Glasner. It’s telling that Mateta executed the striker duties for Palace SO much better than Kane did for England. Kane is done.

No doubt a huge improvement. Can’t think of a team that has struggled to score and play team football throughout a tournament to then go on and win it. Greece played with their backs to the wall but they had some positive games.
The obvious change is to replace Kane. As the Yanks say A No-Brainer. The one game that works for Saka there was no one in the box anticipating his cross. What a waste of talent.

We can see him sending those nice passes to Sane, Musiala in Bayern, but nobody cares Kane there. Talent wasted definetely. Starting Toney or Waterkins will be definitely better with Foden, but they won't make any change. The current situation is England can not create too many opportunities, so if we have to find someone to blame, 10-role is supposed to be that one. Foden and Bellingham can not play like Palmer or Madison, that is the real truth.
They didn't beat Switzerland, they drew and then won on penalties. To say otherwise is just delusional. Up until the Saka goal, England made three shots on target the entire knockout phase, all ended up in goal. This has been a dreadful squad that somehow, by some miracle is in the semis. There's nothing else to it, 10% brilliance of punctual plays by world class players, 90% sheer luck. It's shameful.
Everyone focusing on how England are playing badly, yet France are yet to score a goal from open play. Maybe it’s not that England are doing worse, but more so that other teams have got better.
When I watch this England side, I appreciate more and more the role Odegaard plays to unlock Saka on the right side; you would think they would just replicate that same model by having a center mid supporting him (like what Declan did before the goal), instead of isolating him on the wing, expecting him to beat a double press and perform magic every time
I don't think the left back problem is either Trippier or Southgate's fault. There just isn't a great option for that position this summer. Shaw coming on made Switzerland think, and if he can play against Holland it'll make a massive difference. Kane needs to be a (super?) sub. Konsa did really well, Foden looked so much better than he did against Slovakia (where he was horrendous). The best teams win when playing badly. And we're just definitely playing badly.
Southgate needs to un-invert the fullbacks. There's no point having Foden/Saka both looking to cut inside with no overlap on the right, and vice versa with Bellingham and Trippier on the left. Swap Trippier for Trent too and we might see some dynamic attacking for once.
i dunno if you play football manager, but this makes total sense for me lol. you either have an overlap or an underlap. never TWO underlaps on the same side. insane
@@mowvu Liverpool kind of do this with Harvey Elliott and Salah, but they have that support from TAA behind them to pin them wide. It just isn't working at all with this England team, particularly on the left as at least Saka has a passable weak foot.
yeah, pretty basic stuff - Saka is left footed, but plays there because Ben White overlaps all the time Surely the guy that earns 5M quid a year sees that also
Honestly i have 3 issues from southgates selections 1 why only bring 1 natural left back that hasnt played in 4/5 months. Secondly (I may be wrong because i havent watch bayern) but doesn't Eric Dyer do the exact job southgate is asking of rice? Why is he not in the team? And thirdly Kane be a number 9 that is literally your role in the team please do it
Southgate has got us to more finals than anyone, cut him some slack and marvel at his genius. For the first time in a long time other countries fear our attacking play and change their tactics to counter us. That unfortunately closes the play down. We better get used to this and enjoy the moments when our attacking players make something happen. I admit we need a great natural left winger then we have a team that can win the big one. There must be one coming through in the U21s.
I counted 3 Saka cutbacks that Kane was nowhere near. It was 4am so I could've missed some.
The amount of times saka broke through and Kane was slowly jogging into the box was outrageous
Technally the new system didn't beat the Swiss, the new system drew. England won on penalties which could of happened from any system.
Let watkins on some time lol. Bro is literally just wasted on the bench.
I don't think kane is really a cb hold up magnet type of guy; that's more of a Haaland/Lukaka thing.
Kane is too old now I think
I think I've worked out Southgate's tactics. It is called Repetition Compulsion. Where people unconsciously get themselves into contexts that re-enact their traumatic past. He is tactically setting England up to make it as likely as possibly that we will draw games and end up in shoot outs, thereby, giving him the opportunity to work through his Euro '96 penalty trauma.
i agree to a certain extent. i beleive hes putting the players though a tough time to give them more mental strength and esperience to cope with what he couldnt as a player. southgate is smarter than people think. he is more of psycological person. having first hand experience hes probably the best person to it.
superb stuff
Joking aside, you've got a point. The current lot of England players are excellent, but they're not comfortable playing retro football. What they are comfortable with is playing on the front foot; something which Southgate does not appear to have in his locker.
I'm half expecting to see Southgate playing a back three and a sweeper in the Semi's.

They and Gordon have been absolutely robbed.
Toney’s heat map wasn’t much better. He still wasn’t playing as high as he should be.
TBF it's slightly misleading because the reason Kanes touch map is so deep is because the ball was getting booted to him there constantly, so the majority of his touches were headers in the middle

There’s some real grit and winners mentality with our performances this euros, even if we haven’t looked good 😭
No one coached Toney, the players were just better penalty takers than the past and it showed
Anyone coulda set that lineup
England have the best set of penalty takers in the Euros, so they were perfectly setup for it anyways
Kane and Trippier are the remaining issues in terms of selection. Kane was utterly useless against Switzerland. He walks around like a lost panda.
Shaw maybe comes in for Trippier next game. Kane should still start, but we need to bring on Toney or Watkins on 60 mins.
Kane has been muddling the entire tournament
I agree - Trippier has done a good job in a role he can’t succeed in. Harry Kane has been very leggy. He could be injured
@@tomh2121 This, honestly.
You've been the Spain of punditry throughout the tournament ❤

Special mention to Konsa, thought he was excellent! On the other hand, Kane was very poor throughout, offering nothing in attack and generally looking laboured.
It's crazy that both Guehi and Konsa have been great but are only playing because Maguire is injured
This whole "laboured" look is how he walks around the pitch his whole career. He preserves energy and doesn't run down rabbit holes. Tactically the games aren't playing to his strengths...but he has the quality to be clutch... but Bellingham feels like the weak link imho

we are getting virtually no balls in the box.
Kane is getting no service, not his fault the wingers suck at cut backs.
Foden and Bellingham had no-one to pass to, because Kane was so utterly dreadful. Like a shuffling zombie.
Trent not starting as RWB is criminal and adjust the back 5 (Ugh 🙄) as needed, then swap Kane for someone who will actually go deep instead of being behind foden and Bellingham as when they have the ball they have to pass back as no one is behind them (or should pass to saka when he had space)
Or just keep the system of the first 4 games, swap foden for Gordon and Kane for someone else, and sub Bellingham for foden at half time (or other way round)

They need him off and bring him on in last 15 minutes, he as probably been the worse CF this tournament, he as done virtually nothing.
England should maybe run with 2 strikers to give more of option up front since Kane can't open up or manage to make good space to get the ball around the box
The one positive thing that has come out of Englands appalling run in Euro 2024 - finding you and your channel! You have been excellent!
@@wstew Kane is basically just a mid midfielder at this point and we need to stop pretending he’s a striker

I'm a workman.
Spot on about Kane, but we also need to have a conversation about Walker. He is struggling big time this tournament.
Clearly Southgate has no clue what he's doing and is just playing the same big players game after game, ignoring any advice anyone gives him just makes it even more concrete.

Well said!
Except he generally played too far inside, like a centre-back. He hardly ever hit the wing and only once went for the by-line.
Every one other than Southgate can see those problems
I cannot tell you what joy you’ve brought to my tournament football viewing! Right down to counting the seconds before Trent A-A took that lovely penalty. On we go!
I've noticed that the only times we score goals is when we abandon Gareth Southgates tactics
So why don't they ignroe his tactics straightaway and win 6-0 if that is the problem?
@@blueangel2466 because it's even they have no reason to step out of line. In addition, they don't realise that is what is happening
@@Alex-cw3rz but they realise it when they go behind, suddenly and correct it. You're being daft

I look forward every time to your analysis Adam! It is not only insightful, but hilarious at the same time!
the system drew with the swiss. they beat them on penalties
And also it wasn’t the system that drew it was a moment again
Ik right, they are still clueless as to how to win a game properly, looking at things Spain is probably going to win the euros
Saka ignored tactics that game
@@Thehouse385 Something bad happens, "BOOOOOO SOUTHGATE", something good happens "WELL DONE YOU IGNORED SOUTHGATE". It is a bit tedious
Front post, back post. Never anyone there for the tap in
@@mikem9309 there was one occasion where Saka drilled it low across goal and Kane should have made the near post run
Spot on! The number of times that there was nobody up front to pass to was amazing!
Glen Hoddle said penalties are a lottery and that there's no point practicing them. Southgate is a proper coach and we won. Give him his dues
Worked for Germany for decades!!
Give Yakin and Xhaka Credit for that
When an England fan (myself) prays for penalties so we can get shots on goal there is still something seriously wrong with our football.
With all respect, this is incomprehensible.
I felt all of your emotions through my screen! Great analysis and great fun to watch. Oh and always love a Saka shout out - nerves of steel, innit?
Kane surely is a world class striker , but currently I'd have Watkins start over him
Won't make 0 of a difference
@@GraysonMMO
Did u really think kane perfomer well yesterday? He clearly looks exhausted he needs some rest before the final , if England make it through ofc
@@youngmustang9221 Not that Kane necessarily played well but with the way Southgate sets up I see Toney and Watkins would perform at the same level
The fact is Watkins is a world class striker too
Nobody cares Kane there, Foden has the ball for 5 games, but he can not have 1 pass like Kane did to Trippier against Slovakia. Kane plays bad, that's true, but he donest waste any chance in this tornament. I dont know why English people being so tolerant of Foden.
hard to believe that you are one of many analysts who are missing the stark reality that Cole Palmer (when he is finally brought on by Southgate) is the main reason why Englad start to be more potent in attack, He is always attack minded, rarely loses the ball, can track back and win the ball and generally demonstates class as he floats around the pitch. If he starts we win well against anybody. If not we struggle again.
Got to be worth trying 3-5-2 with Toney up front as well
That would be my temptation…
You forgot to mention that absolutely dire corner that went straight back to Pickford within something like 20 or 30 seconds. Only England could go to all that effort to gain that territory and almost immediately squander it. And these are supposed to be elite players? Embarrassing.
So, what is Kane offering the team? If Toni is at least as good at penalties and more mobile he should start. Southgate probably doesn't want to destroy the confidence of his captain but Kane is basically a passenger at this point
He’s either too old or not fit enough at this point
He is creating the space for the midfield by occupying the opposition centre backs. Being an attacker is not just about scoring goals.
He creates space thats what southgate tells him to do. Southgate tells him to play like this. Kane is playing to the system doing as he's told like every player, its a system issue
@@hothead5395 if he’s playing a deep lying forward then I don’t think it’s how he plays as he scores goals off of getting good ball.
@csvickers151 if you watch kane youd know its exactly how he plays
Barely scraping past mediocre teams is a great way to psyche out the better teams and lull them into a false sense of security. Genius move.
Never comment again you are clueless
Swiss are a class outfit.
Stop commenting
Gareth Southgate wearing the same outfit to every game so far just sums him up really.
he wears the same expression too
I mean, there is a clear problem that Kane is both:
a) Tired/injured/off-form
b) The undroppable, talismanic team captain
For this match England went to the formation that Palace uses under Glasner. It’s telling that Mateta executed the striker duties for Palace SO much better than Kane did for England. Kane is done.
it wasn’t the system, it was once again the quality of player..Bellingham last game and now the starboy

First time watching a video of yours and this is spot on! Love the analysis, absolutely agree with all of the points
Welcome aboard!
I still think we need Gordon on that left wing. And start Watkins over Kane.
Southgate: Gordon? who?
Gordon Trippier
Watkins Kane
Palmer Foden
As wingback Gordon is streets ahead of trippier. Even trippier would agree
How good is Gordon at defending? (Not a rhetorical question.)
@@bonglesnodkins329 Not good, which is why he is not picked. He has mythical properties to many England fans though despite the fact he is a right footed, very attacking left-winger who last started when we lost 0-1 to Iceland
This the best and most accurate analysis I have seen. Great video and channel. I don’t think understand how Kane didn’t get called out more for his performance. People talk about him not getting service but he was never in the right position. England were playing with 10 men. I now they have problems but the first step in fixing them is Watkins or Toney.
Needs to play Watkins against the Dutch. Foden and Kane are Southgate's new Sterling.
Thought Foden was excellent first half. Much improved. Kane though, dear me. He looks so lost.
@@andrewleese89as a spurs fan, it’s sad to see Kane getting all this criticism. But I do believe it is deserved, the guy looks useless, his defensive work is alright but as a striker he’s shit for England.
Toney or Watkins should start over him and Kane should just be an impact sub.
Sterling was englands player of the tournament last euros …
man, Sterling is always the best one after Southgate coaches.
There is no obvious replacement for Kane. Toney and Watkins need to be phased in after this tournament
Foden has the ball for 5 games, but he can not have 1 pass like Kane did to Trippier against Slovakia. Kane plays bad in this tornament, that's true, but he donest waste any chance in this tornament. I dont know why people being so tolerant of Foden.
But I toltaly agree if you have to start Foden, just bench Kane.
“ Football is about giving yourself chance not guarantees “ so so so so true and a lot can be learned from that !
It's shameful.
i'm pretty sure that means they beat Switzerland 🤣🤣 you really folding yourself into a pretzel with that logic
Everyone focusing on how England are playing badly, yet France are yet to score a goal from open play.
Maybe it’s not that England are doing worse, but more so that other teams have got better.
France v England my dream final
@@OmarJamesthe logic is pretty clear , the system got them a draw , they didn’t beat the Swiss with a system , they beat them in a penalty shootout
@@hushskyso they beat them then?? 😂😂
When I watch this England side, I appreciate more and more the role Odegaard plays to unlock Saka on the right side; you would think they would just replicate that same model by having a center mid supporting him (like what Declan did before the goal), instead of isolating him on the wing, expecting him to beat a double press and perform magic every time
I beg that we start Watkins he’s a proper number 9 not whatever Kane is
Whatever Kane is? England's all-time top goalscorer? LOL
This is brilliantly analysed and explained. Makes a change from the usually hand waving and cgi charts and flashy graphics
Our system didn't beat Switzerland 😂. They attacked with speed for about 2 minutes took a shot and scored. Switzerland then missed a penalty.
Pen wasnt missed it was saved
Back in the real world… we did beat Switzerland and Switzerland didn’t miss any penalties 🤷♂️
So in summary, our system beat them?
TAA is right footed
yeah, pretty basic stuff - Saka is left footed, but plays there because Ben White overlaps all the time
Surely the guy that earns 5M quid a year sees that also
I fell over when he said "before you can even send that Southgate Out tweet..."
