    Freddy could play anything he always gave 110% . No one could surpass his feeling and his skill level. A true legend. I saw him at The Jazz Workshop in Boston and he played with total intensity for 2 hours straight.His ballad playing would bring tears to your eyes. He mastered that Getzen Flugelhorn like it was part of his body.

    "All the trumpet players in the '70s, you can hear Freddie Hubbard's sound and everything worth playing, He's such a phenomenal trumpet player - just the largeness of his sound, the velocity and the swing".
    Wynton Marsalis

      Many of the trumpet players in the 70s played from the ankles up. Big horns and wide open mouthpieces. The big fat sound exploded from the horns. Because of technology and not having to play so loud in the 70s type bands the style has definitely changed.

    The only trumpeter who could afford the luxury of improvising the way he did in the middle of a dancing session...😂

    To: "Horus Curcino" and "thiscocks" - That's not at all what happened at end of tune. My father, Allyn Ferguson, conductor & arranger, was paying 'homage' to the players, by pointing & giving them credit, because they had done a great job, something he often did. He had very much respect for the musicians on his sessions. Remember, there were NO overdubs...the sessions were 'live', direct to disc, no edits; whatever they played was recorded & released untouched. I was associate producer on the video...great times. Dad always had great fun with the players, and most were good friends, as well. Several of the same musicians played on many of his other sessions. The other trumpet players are Chuck Findley, Gary Grant; Vince DeRosa (horn); Tommy Johnson (tuba); Bill Watrous (trombone); Bill Perkins (tenor); Bud Shank (alto); Bob Tricarico (baritone). Rhythm Section: Dan Ferguson (guitar); Abe Laboriel (Bass); Bill Mays (piano); Bill Maxwell (drums); Joe Porcaro (percussion).
    Such fun & talent! I miss the people & those days...

      Oh, and the album WAS released, "Ride Like the Wind". We didn't release the video, but may do so. It was shown late night in UK on an educational channel.

      +Jillian Ferguson I had a video on VHS of this session as shown here AND the LP on Elektra. Hearing this makes me wish Freddie had done MORE in the big band setting it is so good a match for his sound. Thank you for all of your contribution re the legacy of your father, one of the great all around musicians.

      +Jillian Ferguson You were so fortunate to be in the company of so many of the greatest cats on the West Coast..Bill Watrous, Bud Shank, Bill Mays, WOW

      Well, you brought a tear to my eye! Yes, I wish I'd realized just how fortunate... incredible people & players. You're right, that was the video/VHS. So good, I wish we could release again, but tough times... thanks for your kinds words about dad... I adored him. Great man.

      I don't think there was ever a lawsuit, but we would not have been involved in that because dad was not the original composer. He simply arranged the tune for this album. Chris Cross was the original songwriter.

    There's nothing more magical than a live take and nailing it pretty much the first time, especially with a big band. Always loved this track too, and Freddie's playing/music.

    ...this model is awsome ... a beautiful horn...still one of the best...in speicial when they has been made by the old supreme hands of master Domenick Calicchio...

    • @oldGB1
      @oldGB1 7 місяців тому +1

      Knew Dominic and worked in his shop for a time being a gopher and cleaning the place. He gave me the job because I was a starving trumpet player looking for a steady gig. My friends and I out of love for him called him Geppetto after the guy in the movie that made Pinocchio. He was a gentleman and had a great sense of humor. Still have two of his horns he made and a mouthpiece. He was a master craftsman.

    This is a gorgeous piece. I really dig the vintage sound. I don't know why, but there is just something here that is lacking in modern music. Even if this was played today, the sound wouldn't be the same.

    The conductor is (was) Allyn Ferguson-he wrote & arranged this project-yea-at the end he does say a few words to either Chuck Findley or Gary Grant...nothing all that important-no mistake at 5:08 I could detect. This SHOULD be re-issued on DVD-it was a double header back to back recording project (two days) and was a bitch because it was done Live w/o stops and digital in June 1981. Chuck Findley is playing lead (as usual) and sounds great-it was Gary Grant's birthday and Chuck offered to cover ALL the lead for Gary as a present-afterwards Chuck, Gary & Freddie went to Martino's (famous Hollywood Italian restaurant now closed) and Freddie ordered 4 bottles of expensive champagne to celebrate-at one point Freddie skipped out leaving Chuck & Gary to pay the bill...true story
