It happens when an upper moon is running away because it is getting day, and they (Nezuko and Tanjiro) are in an open space. Nezuko starts burning, Tanjiro tries to cover her, Nezuko throws Tanjiro away so he could kill the upper moon, he kills it, and then starts crying for Nezuko's sacrifice.
