    I would nitpick, they constantly say "lost 25% of energy", or "lost 2/3 of its energy". That is not correct, it lost 25% of its speed. Assuming there was no mass loss (which there was), it would be 25% less momentum. But not 25% energy loss. It would be way more energy loss (44% to be exact). Because kinetic energy is mv^2 (or equivalently p^2/2). Similarly losing 2/3 of speed, is losing 89% of energy.

    I remember hearing in the 80's that the British SAS were trained to shoot a burst of bullets under a car to shoot out multiple tires at once.
    I don't know if that was a movie thing, or if it's true. When I was younger (and more impressionable), I used to believe it. Now, I tend to think it's some urban legend.

    It's a shock "wave". Waves don't always move things forward. On the water, waves move things up and down.

  • @Ellerion2
    @Ellerion2 2 місяці тому +6

    The myth about the deflating tires was not so much of a myth. The old tires had inner tubes that deflated faster and the tires were more dsngerous. It was more the problem with the rims which did not hold pressure. The newer rims do hold the pressure, though, so the tires deflate slower.

    I think the only way to make buster fly further is to use a 50ish gallon plastic barrel/drum filled with air + regular road-use gasoline or diesel, pulverized to stoichiometry (no liquid at the bottom). This definitely has a different blow-up speed compared to explosives, but myth still busted anyways cuz in real world use after a few minutes the gas precipitates to the bottom and becomes a liquid puddle again catching fire instead of exploding... so a lot of work to very little practical destructive effect.

    The shockwave experiment lacked one component. Almost every explosion in Hollywood has surrounding structures, vehicles, or rock formations. Setting a blast in a completely open space, allows the shockwave to escape in all directions. They should experiment with a cement barrier on the opposite side of buster.

    • @waynelowe3329
      @waynelowe3329 2 місяці тому

      I thought that because in a built up area the shockwave would be directed and have more power but i still don't think such a small shockwave would do anything significant to prove the story.

    I think that the problem with the shock wave jump is that a shock wave doesn't actually move any of the individual air molecules very much. Instead it is a wave that propagates through the air.
    One thing that they could have tried was to take a high pressure air tank and blown that to bits with a small amount of C4. I would probably have taken something like 4000 psi to do anything, but it might have worked.

      Probably because it's somewhat inappropriate, like testing whether jet fuel can melt steel beams if you know what I mean, imagine the backlash that would result in them doing it, especially if they ended up finding something that doesn't add up (Idk if UA-cam deletes comments mentioning the incident directly so instead of testing 6 comments to find one that works I'll just insinuate)

    50FT is way too far away. People who are moved by a shockwave... A shockwave like any expanding spherical thing is subject to the inverse square law, and as such the energy reduces with the square of the distance. So moving the explosion 25 feet away, the shockwave would have 4x as much energy. Move him to 6ft and the shockwave is going to have 70x more energy.

    I think the bouncing bullet myth is definitely plausible
    1) there is variance in where the bullets are being shot from in terms of direction and angle in real life
    2) the distance between cars would also be variable in real life so the contact point would also be different
    These two new variables in my opinion lend itself to this myth being plausible instead of flat-out busted

      The angle required to hit the small target on the model of car used in the Burn Notice episode makes that specific myth busted (unless the car was missing a key component).
      Overall it is vaguely plausible for certain models of car but you would need to have the luckiest shot ever and have the bad guys drive specific model of car it works on. Definitely not a reliable method as it was presented in the TV episode

      They could have also tested if a slightly more powerful round could make it through more consistently. Also even if you fire 10 rounds, if at least 1 of them makes it through it could be enough to freak the driver out and stop the car

    If you had used a spring instead of air pressure to throw the mannequin, you would have seen the effect of the blast wave in its launch, the waves created by the air pressure to throw the mannequin acted like a shield every time, in the first attempt, this collision was clearly visible.
