The ad said I could put plant on it for display, such was her state...for £20 I put her back to work, where she should be! Thank you, Anna. I had an elder lady who bought a 301A from me for her grand-daughter. She herself owns a 201 she bought new. She said it is the Rolls-Royce of sewing machines and her daughters and grand-daughters pester her all the time to name them in her will! I've never even seen one in person myself. I tend to favor the slant needle cast aluminum models. I'm not sure, but I think you may be having too much fun! Thank you for saving those machines.

Not downsizing but shopping for a good refurbished vintage"workhorse" machine with not too many "Bells and Whistles" that I can maintain myself. @@4seasonshomestead773 I think I stated the 301 would hold more value. If you just want one of them get the nicest 301A you can find. It is more versatile because it is more portable and lighter and has a built-in handle. You can use a cradle system to mount in a cabinet but push a lever and lift it right out of the cabinet to take it anywhere. It is the only machine I know of that the stitch looks the same from the top or the bottom, it is almost as powerful as the 404.
I have all three; 221, 301, 404. I was going to sell my 404, but after listening to your tutorial, I think I'll hold onto it. How many stitches per minute are the 301, and the 401?
My mother had a machine just like the last one you showed, but hers had an area where most of the top would flip up and it had a hole where you would drop in different cams to make different stitches. She bought hers in 1964. I have it, but it's buried in the bottom of my closet in a box. It still runs, but there's something wrong with the tension. The stitches don't look right any more, so something is out of whack. It's still a strong machine, but compared to my other modern machines, it's loud! But back in the day, 60s-70s she sewed a lot of things on it. She began to teach me how to sew on it when I was 5 years old.

Ive got 2 404's and all because of my mom. She was an avid sewer and her brother who was a certified Singer trained mechanic swore by this machine and the 26-91 for toughness and beautiful stitch. Great video

Welcome. There are all great machines, IMO. I just favor the stronger, heavy-duty 404. Most people would probably choose the 301A over it or even the little featherweight if they can afford one. Hi Andy, this was a very good comparison. I learned a lot about the moving Interior behind the needle bar. I finally got to see that moving 1/3 disc behind that needle bar.I think you said it stabilized the machine so that it wouldn’t vibrate while sewing. Thanks.
Thank you. I believe it's called the needle bar counter-balance. Also called the crank. On the other end of the horizontal arm shaft, behind the handwheel, is another counter-balance. It is my understanding that they help the arm shaft run smoothly with less vibration, ie: balanced.
I know this was done about 6 years ago, but I can't think of a single singer sewing machine, much less any other sewing machines that had a timing belt during the '40s or before '50s. I think you have to get into the '60s before they start putting a timing belt into the sewing machines
Andy, when are you going to do a video on one of the Swing Needle Singers. I think you would like them. Easy to use a different bobbin case to use 15x1 needles.

I found this on line, SINGER Featherweight Bobbin, Case Simanco 45750 USA 221 222 301 OEM Original. It’s says original but it is also called Simanco. I can't confirm what I can't see/touch. The bobbin case has several parts to it and they each have a part number. people believe that the 221 featherweight and 301A Slant Needle models use the same bobbin case, and that may be true. I can positively say that SIMANCO is Singer. SIMANCO is an acronym standing for Singer Manufacturing Co. So SIMANCO & SINGER are one in the same companies. There are several brands of after-market 301A bobbin cases starting at less than $20 and their quality varies. I have used $30 to $50 cases with great success. If you have the money an original case (in good working condition) is always best, but buy from a seller who guarantees and offers returns. It has the same mechanics as your 503A; direct drive motor, all steel gears, but no zigzag or cam stack, so all that power goes right to the needle bar, Whew! The follow-up model to the 301A but with a front drop-in bobbin system and class 66 bobbins. They beefed up some of the bushings, too, and called it their "Heavy Duty" model and most high schools used it in their sewing classes. Maybe you should buy more? My theory was if they stacked up higher than the sofa I had to start selling some.

I can't remember what the machines looked like when I was in Home-Ec.? Jr. high.. late 60's.. I do remember making a skirt though,, I think I picked some fabric that would have been better suited for drapes or upholstery, haha... so they probably were heavy duty machines.

"Definitely an old sewing machine" would be from 1900 to 1990. Sorry, never heard of that brand. Try doing a Google Picture Search. If it is a heavy black iron machine it may be a Japanese clone of a Singer model 15, 66, or 99.
They're all fine straight stitchers, but out of the three, I'd choose the 301 first (I prefer the vertical bobbin and it is FAST as greased lightning) the 404 second (it's easy to use, sturdy and reliable) and the 221 last (it's a great collectible, but not really a machine for your everyday sewing.)

OK. My mistake to call it an oscillating hook. You are correct; the hook rotates not oscillates. I still think of it as a vertical hook. It does sit on a Horizontal Shaft (x-axis). I call it a vertical hook b/c it sits vertically to the ground (y-axis) versus the hook on the 404 with the front, top drop-in bobbin system, which Singer also calls a horizontal rotary hook in their literature. You surely are correctly calling it a Rotary Hook. All three of these machines have a rotating hook. My bad. Thanks for your comment and for watching my channel.l
The model 191b is a class 15 machine (bobbins) The B means it was made in Bonnières, France. The 191K was made in Kilbowie< Scottland and there was a model made in Quebec, Canada. Parts & supplies can be harder to find if you are in the USA. I know it came in a treadle version, and hand-crank version and possibly an electric motor version, or a kit to convert to an electric motor. It has a low straight shank needle bar system. I would not buy it personally. It's a transition machine; a nothing burger. If you want a 15 class then go for an iron horse 15 with the direct drive potted motor. By far I would choose a Model 404, or 403A over either of those class 15 machines. The 404 is straight stitch w/ reverse, is affordable, parts are readily available, and it was designed as a heavy duty machine. The straight stitch version of the hugely popular 401A. The Model 403A is the middle sister with zigzag sewing. Either one of those will sew denim, canvas, duck cloth, vinyl, Naugahyde, upholstery fabrics, and garment leather. The have a slant-needle design that allows you to see the work area so much better. They use a direct drive steel gearing system and have an enclosed PA style motor that is rated at .7 amps and peaks at close to 1 amp. They are easy to maintain and can easily last your lifetime if kept cleaned and oiled. Have had my early Singer Zig Zag since the 1960's, probably the latter half of 60's. Just cannot remember exactly. Hasn't been in my possession in quite awhile. Recently was returned to me. It must be all metal. I can no longer lift it alone. Lol. Instruction book lost. Where do I find the model number on this thing. Reacquainted myself with the unique bobbin winding method but may need to replace belt soon.

You do that by loosening the screw and moving the stop up or down and tightening the screw and testing with a bobbin. There is no measurement or marking to tell you how high or low to put the stop. You can also fill a bobbin to the point you want, then slide the stop into the bobbin until it starts to move the tire from the handwheel and then set the stop at that point and tighten the screw. Bobbins Don't really oscillate or rotate like you're thinking it's the hook that does that but your thinking is correct the hooks on these three models all rotate and do not oscillate that it was my mistake thanks for watching

Andy. Love your videos. Have mint 403a and 404. Agree 404 my favorite. Trying to locate model number or supplier for free motion quilt foot. Purchased HoneySew for slant shaft #P60417 said to fit 300-400-500 Singers but it does not work. Fits shaft just fine but on up stroke of needle does not touch the spring arm. Hi, Mark. I looked at the foot you bought, and understand what you mean. I don't sew a lick, so I had to ask around and here is what I found out. The original vintage darning/quilting foot for these models is part no. 161162. When found on eBay it sells for $75 and up (and up) www.etsy.com/listing/120521475/rare-singer-401-darning-embroidery Some of the quilters I emailed today do not use a foot of any kind, just a hoop or their hands to guide the fabric. They wondered if the spring is "adjustable" and if you lowered the presser bar tension by turning the knob up top far to the counter-clockwise area. They pointed out that a similar foot is listed at sew-classic specifically for the 401, 403 and many of us have bought from sew-classic for years without any problems. It looks like the foot you bought. If me, I would email Sue there and ask if I'm installing/adjusting it correctly. We would be really shocked if she sold something that did not work right. Andy, I am trying to reach out as a few friends suggested you might have my answer. I was bequeathed a tan Centennial 301 (yes really.. NA000420) and I am struggling to get it to work properly. After it picks up the bobbin thread properly, the upper thread keeps winding around the bobbin base tab when I try to stitch. I've changed the throatplate, the hook assembly, the bobbin case, etc. with spares, and I keep getting the same result. I do have the proper 301 parts installed (not similar 221 parts). I do have a picture, but hopefully, I've described it well enough.
Hello Brad, welcome to Andy Tube. A couple possibilities. The Rotating Hook Loop Guard (part 170128) is attached to the backside of the hook. It can be worn and scratched, and thread can hang-up on it. You may be familiar with Terry Fielding’s website www.tandtrepair.com/ on his featherweight page he has a free guide he wrote showing how to remove/repair/replace the Loop Guard. It pertains to your 301 model as well. The other thought is to be sure the Hub of the Hook is up against the Hook Shaft Collar. Not so tight as to bind, but no gap between the Hub & Collar. Since you can pick-up the bobbin thread it seems the timing is OK, so the position of the hook on the shaft may be affecting actual stitch forming at running speed. If you need an Adjusters Manual they are for sale on eBay, Internet and so forth. Scribd.com may have a free copy if you are a member.
Thank you kindly for the reply. After I asked, I was able to learn the problem/solution. This new-to-me machine apparently had someone put a screwdriver where it didn't belong! The solution is that the two positioning springs on the throatplate had been bent out of shape and were causing the threads to be unable to slip off the tab! While springs could have worn and opened up a little with usage, or plugged up with lint (none there), in this case someone had to have bent them for this to have happened. I would suspect someone heard noise from the bobbin base and, instead of oiling it, they probably thought the noise was at the tab...and very wrongfully decided to bend them closer together to eliminate any "slap" of the tab. I am happy to report that the machine is sewing well after I put another plate in it. After that, I took the springs off of the old plate and bent them back into shape and replaced it. It also now works! Apparently, with all my switching out of parts (like the hook assemblies), I did NOT previously exchange the throatplate as I had thought. Hope this info is of use to you, and thank you again for your willingness to help!

Yes. Singer model 401A, 403A & 404 have very similar parts and in general would work on any of those models. I recently saw a 401A using a 457 tension unit.It is mostly the size and length of the stud. If the stud will go in the hole and be held level and the unit sticks out enough from the body I think your OK. Some sellers have brand new tension units, often cheaper than a used vintage unit that they claim will work on your 404. They look different, but they claim it will work properly and advertise it specifically for the 401, 403, 404, etc. Here is just one of the sellers: www.singeronline.com/sitedipa4.html

I've never done that and think it's a bad idea. The motor housings are different sizes, but the 301 motor may "fit" inside the 401, but it's a lower-rated AMP motor. The motor shafts are of different sizes. On the end of the motor shaft is a pinion gear that meshes with the handwheel gear. These two motors have different pinion gears and the handwheels and handwheel gears are different, and I think mixing them together is asking for problems, especially with the handwheel gear. Could it work? I guess, but I would not do it.

@@mayahansen5696 I get it! over the years I have found that when people tell me the motor is "not quite as fast" that it could well be a motor tune-up is needed. Here is the quickest way I know to see if the motor is the problem: ua-cam.com/video/pzq4tv8qn94/v-deo.html On the other hand, when people tell me the motor is "running very slowly" I find that the foot controller needs rehab, like cleaning the carbon stack and adjusting the contacts. This is an overlooked area.I've had people take a machine halfway apart and adjusted and used 4oz of oil with no improvement, but rehab the pedal and zoom, "sewing like when I bought it 40 years ago". Thank you, Anna. I had an elder lady who bought a 301A from me for her grand-daughter. She herself owns a 201 she bought new. She said it is the Rolls-Royce of sewing machines and her daughters and grand-daughters pester her all the time to name them in her will! I've never even seen one in person myself. I tend to favor the slant needle cast aluminum models. I'm not sure, but I think you may be having too much fun! Thank you for saving those machines.

Just think the design is so lovely...The daughters of the lady will have a big fight me thinks. She should decide beforehand the machine's destiny by flipping a coin, maybe. Not downsizing but shopping for a good refurbished vintage"workhorse" machine with not too many "Bells and Whistles" that I can maintain myself. Couldn't pay me to have any of the plastic new machines they make thees days.
@@4seasonshomestead773 I think I stated the 301 would hold more value. If you just want one of them get the nicest 301A you can find. It is more versatile because it is more portable and lighter and has a built-in handle. You can use a cradle system to mount in a cabinet but push a lever and lift it right out of the cabinet to take it anywhere. It is the only machine I know of that the stitch looks the same from the top or the bottom, it is almost as powerful as the 404.
I have all three; 221, 301, 404. I was going to sell my 404, but after listening to your tutorial, I think I'll hold onto it. How many stitches per minute are the 301, and the 401?
I have to agree , the 404 is a heaver duty machine. My 404 is a true work horse!

My mother had a machine just like the last one you showed, but hers had an area where most of the top would flip up and it had a hole where you would drop in different cams to make different stitches. She bought hers in 1964. I have it, but it's buried in the bottom of my closet in a box. It still runs, but there's something wrong with the tension. The stitches don't look right any more, so something is out of whack. It's still a strong machine, but compared to my other modern machines, it's loud! But back in the day, 60s-70s she sewed a lot of things on it. She began to teach me how to sew on it when I was 5 years old.

Ive got 2 404's and all because of my mom. She was an avid sewer and her brother who was a certified Singer trained mechanic swore by this machine and the 26-91 for toughness and beautiful stitch. Great video

Welcome. There are all great machines, IMO. I just favor the stronger, heavy-duty 404. Most people would probably choose the 301A over it or even the little featherweight if they can afford one. Hi Andy, this was a very good comparison. I learned a lot about the moving Interior behind the needle bar. I finally got to see that moving 1/3 disc behind that needle bar.I think you said it stabilized the machine so that it wouldn’t vibrate while sewing. Thanks.
Thank you. I believe it's called the needle bar counter-balance. Also called the crank. On the other end of the horizontal arm shaft, behind the handwheel, is another counter-balance. It is my understanding that they help the arm shaft run smoothly with less vibration, ie: balanced.
I know this was done about 6 years ago, but I can't think of a single singer sewing machine, much less any other sewing machines that had a timing belt during the '40s or before '50s. I think you have to get into the '60s before they start putting a timing belt into the sewing machines

I found this on line, SINGER Featherweight Bobbin, Case Simanco 45750 USA 221 222 301 OEM Original. It’s says original but it is also called Simanco. I can't confirm what I can't see/touch. The bobbin case has several parts to it and they each have a part number. people believe that the 221 featherweight and 301A Slant Needle models use the same bobbin case, and that may be true. I can positively say that SIMANCO is Singer. SIMANCO is an acronym standing for Singer Manufacturing Co. So SIMANCO & SINGER are one in the same companies. There are several brands of after-market 301A bobbin cases starting at less than $20 and their quality varies. I have used $30 to $50 cases with great success. If you have the money an original case (in good working condition) is always best, but buy from a seller who guarantees and offers returns. The Featherweight Shop has a replacement case made to their specifications and guarantees it will work if you have the original hook on your machine and use a quality bobbin. singer-featherweight.com/collections/301-parts/products/singer-featherweight-bobbin-case-tfs

It has the same mechanics as your 503A; direct drive motor, all steel gears, but no zigzag or cam stack, so all that power goes right to the needle bar, Whew! The follow-up model to the 301A but with a front drop-in bobbin system and class 66 bobbins. They beefed up some of the bushings, too, and called it their "Heavy Duty" model and most high schools used it in their sewing classes. Maybe you should buy more? My theory was if they stacked up higher than the sofa I had to start selling some.

I can't remember what the machines looked like when I was in Home-Ec.? Jr. high.. late 60's.. "Definitely an old sewing machine" would be from 1900 to 1990. Sorry, never heard of that brand. Try doing a Google Picture Search. If it is a heavy black iron machine it may be a Japanese clone of a Singer model 15, 66, or 99.

They're all fine straight stitchers, but out of the three, I'd choose the 301 first (I prefer the vertical bobbin and it is FAST as greased lightning) the 404 second (it's easy to use, sturdy and reliable) and the 221 last (it's a great collectible, but not really a machine for your everyday sewing.)

Correction on the hook of the 221. It’s a Horizontal rotary hook, not a vertical oscillating hook. The 301’s are the same.
OK. My mistake to call it an oscillating hook. You are correct; the hook rotates not oscillates. I still think of it as a vertical hook. It does sit on a Horizontal Shaft (x-axis). I call it a vertical hook b/c it sits vertically to the ground (y-axis) versus the hook on the 404 with the front, top drop-in bobbin system, which Singer also calls a horizontal rotary hook in their literature. You surely are correctly calling it a Rotary Hook. All three of these machines have a rotating hook. My bad. Thanks for your comment and for watching my channel.l
What do you think about the 191B? I need something to sew over thick material. My old Elna doesn’t have enough guts. Also 404 is available.
The model 191b is a class 15 machine (bobbins) The B means it was made in Bonnières, France. The 191K was made in Kilbowie< Scottland and there was a model made in Quebec, Canada. Parts & supplies can be harder to find if you are in the USA. I know it came in a treadle version, and hand-crank version and possibly an electric motor version, or a kit to convert to an electric motor. It has a low straight shank needle bar system. I would not buy it personally. It's a transition machine; a nothing burger. If you want a 15 class then go for an iron horse 15 with the direct drive potted motor.
By far I would choose a Model 404, or 403A over either of those class 15 machines. The 404 is straight stitch w/ reverse, is affordable, parts are readily available, and it was designed as a heavy duty machine. The straight stitch version of the hugely popular 401A. The Model 403A is the middle sister with zigzag sewing. Either one of those will sew denim, canvas, duck cloth, vinyl, Naugahyde, upholstery fabrics, and garment leather. The have a slant-needle design that allows you to see the work area so much better. They use a direct drive steel gearing system and have an enclosed PA style motor that is rated at .7 amps and peaks at close to 1 amp. They are easy to maintain and can easily last your lifetime if kept cleaned and oiled. You can download a free 60 page instruction manual here:

Have had my early Singer Zig Zag since the 1960's, probably the latter half of 60's. Just cannot remember exactly. Hasn't been in my possession in quite awhile. Recently was returned to me. It must be all metal. I can no longer lift it alone. Lol. Instruction book lost. Where do I find the model number on this thing. Reacquainted myself with the unique bobbin winding method but may need to replace belt soon.
There are many model numbers of Singer machines and over the years they put the model number/name in different locations. This search will give you some sources to help you find it on your machine. You do that by loosening the screw and moving the stop up or down and tightening the screw and testing with a bobbin. There is no measurement or marking to tell you how high or low to put the stop. You can also fill a bobbin to the point you want, then slide the stop into the bobbin until it starts to move the tire from the handwheel and then set the stop at that point and tighten the screw. Bobbins Don't really oscillate or rotate like you're thinking it's the hook that does that but your thinking is correct the hooks on these three models all rotate and do not oscillate that it was my mistake thanks for watching

It was only sold in the USA and Canada in the 1950s. I guess it depends on your definition of the UK. If Canada was not part of the UK at that time, then it was not sold in the UK. I'm basing that on this 301 website; www.singer301.com/about/default.html in a section about 80% down the page.

Andy. Love your videos. Have mint 403a and 404. Agree 404 my favorite. Trying to locate model number or supplier for free motion quilt foot. Purchased HoneySew for slant shaft #P60417 said to fit 300-400-500 Singers but it does not work. Fits shaft just fine but on up stroke of needle does not touch the spring arm. It is to high to engage. Can you direct me to one that fits? Thanks. Mark
Hi, Mark. I looked at the foot you bought, and understand what you mean. I don't sew a lick, so I had to ask around and here is what I found out. The original vintage darning/quilting foot for these models is part no. 161162. When found on eBay it sells for $75 and up (and up)

Some of the quilters I emailed today do not use a foot of any kind, just a hoop or their hands to guide the fabric. (that is what I'd call 'skilled")

A couple of them thought the foot you bought would work, and many sites sell them for slant shank machines. They wondered if the spring is "adjustable" and if you lowered the presser bar tension by turning the knob up top far to the counter-clockwise area.
They pointed out that a similar foot is listed at sew-classic specifically for the 401, 403 and many of us have bought from sew-classic for years without any problems. It looks like the foot you bought. If me, I would email Sue there and ask if I'm installing/adjusting it correctly. We would be really shocked if she sold something that did not work right. Andy, I am trying to reach out as a few friends suggested you might have my answer. I was bequeathed a tan Centennial 301 (yes really.. NA000420) and I am struggling to get it to work properly. After it picks up the bobbin thread properly, the upper thread keeps winding around the bobbin base tab when I try to stitch. I've changed the throatplate, the hook assembly, the bobbin case, etc. with spares, and I keep getting the same result. I do have the proper 301 parts installed (not similar 221 parts). I do have a picture, but hopefully, I've described it well enough.
Hello Brad, welcome to Andy Tube. A couple possibilities. The Rotating Hook Loop Guard (part 170128) is attached to the backside of the hook. It can be worn and scratched, and thread can hang-up on it. You may be familiar with Terry Fielding’s website www.tandtrepair.com/ on his featherweight page he has a free guide he wrote showing how to remove/repair/replace the Loop Guard. It pertains to your 301 model as well.
The other thought is to be sure the Hub of the Hook is up against the Hook Shaft Collar. Not so tight as to bind, but no gap between the Hub & Collar. Since you can pick-up the bobbin thread it seems the timing is OK, so the position of the hook on the shaft may be affecting actual stitch forming at running speed.
If you need an Adjusters Manual they are for sale on eBay, Internet and so forth. Scribd.com may have a free copy if you are a member.

This new-to-me machine apparently had someone put a screwdriver where it didn't belong! The solution is that the two positioning springs on the throatplate had been bent out of shape and were causing the threads to be unable to slip off the tab!
While springs could have worn and opened up a little with usage, or plugged up with lint (none there), in this case someone had to have bent them for this to have happened. I would suspect someone heard noise from the bobbin base and, instead of oiling it, they probably thought the noise was at the tab...and very wrongfully decided to bend them closer together to eliminate any "slap" of the tab.
I am happy to report that the machine is sewing well after I put another plate in it. After that, I took the springs off of the old plate and bent them back into shape and replaced it. It also now works! Apparently, with all my switching out of parts (like the hook assemblies), I did NOT previously exchange the throatplate as I had thought.

Can I use another singer tension assembly on a 404
Yes. Singer model 401A, 403A & 404 have very similar parts and in general would work on any of those models. I recently saw a 401A using a 457 tension unit.It is mostly the size and length of the stud. If the stud will go in the hole and be held level and the unit sticks out enough from the body I think your OK. Some sellers have brand new tension units, often cheaper than a used vintage unit that they claim will work on your 404. They look different, but they claim it will work properly and advertise it specifically for the 401, 403, 404, etc. Here is just one of the sellers:

Can the 301 motor be used in the 401a?
I've never done that and think it's a bad idea. The motor housings are different sizes, but the 301 motor may "fit" inside the 401, but it's a lower-rated AMP motor. The motor shafts are of different sizes. On the end of the motor shaft is a pinion gear that meshes with the handwheel gear. These two motors have different pinion gears and the handwheels and handwheel gears are different, and I think mixing them together is asking for problems, especially with the handwheel gear. Could it work? I guess, but I would not do it.

I will start watching those specific videos of yours and give it a try. (the 401 is running very slowly and I've taken everything apart except the motor, oiled, greased and cleaned, but still running slow). Thank you so much!

On the other hand, when people tell me the motor is "running very slowly" I find that the foot controller needs rehab, like cleaning the carbon stack and adjusting the contacts. This is an overlooked area.I've had people take a machine halfway apart and adjusted and used 4oz of oil with no improvement, but rehab the pedal and zoom, "sewing like when I bought it 40 years ago".
