I was in Colmar in Dec. I had a wonderful time. The town is so easy to navigate. The locals are friendly, and understand English. I used my limited French to get by. During Christmas time, the buildings are decorated. You have to visit this beautiful region no matter what season you go. Don’t forget to visit the neighboring towns, they are easy access by local bus that departs from the train station.
I going to travel solo next year to Colmar. Do the locals speak or understand English? How to order food in restaurant in Colmar? Need to call the waiter or the waiter will aproach the customer?
Near the city center and tourist areas, most locals will speak English. The farther out you go, less will be fluent in English. We were in Strasbourg and it wasn't difficult to order/point to what you want. Keep a translator app handy to decipher any menu items you're unfamiliar with before ordering. Most of the time we called the waiter, it's important to know you should ask for your check when finished.
