I'm a native Japanese, and his Japanese is really AMAZING. It might be better for people who are learning Japanese to follow his good example(no one-size-fits all kinda methods tho) because I would see him as a native, if I didn't know he's an international person, which is not a Japanese fake compliment. So, I understand the feelings of Japanese people who saw him as a native.
But, needles to say, korekara podcast's Japanese level is also at a mind blowing level as well;)
Learning languages are not winning or losing, so please don't compare with someone, and enjoy the process😊👌

he's very good but i can tell he isn't native, small things give it away. I'm just gonna list the things that i noticed during the last of his Japanese speaking portion:
small pitch accent ambiguities when saying certain words.
24:19 pitch accent for Twitter (ツイッター) went down (possibly influenced by the English pronunciation) when usually Japanese speakers say ツイッター (↗ →)
24:39 he said 今さら when it should be 今から
24:45 when he said どんな the pitch accent is off (he said どんな↗ but it should be どんな↘)
24:49 pitch accent of 考え is off
24:54 he said どうでもならない but it actually should be どうにもならない

I'm American. I think his English sounds near native. If you scrutinize his English you're going to find small mistakes but that's true for most people. Just look at UA-camrs who make videos of themselves speaking freely. Instead of redoing the video when they make a mistake they'll typically just put a subtitle or note or something. If his Japanese were as good as his English I would be super impressed. I'm not able to really judge that though as my Japanese level isn't high enough (I do have N2 so it's not bad either). Listening to his Japanese I thought he sounded really good. If you really wanted to showcase his Japanese you'd have to make the video all in Japanese at least. I got a better feel for his English skills than his Japanese.

This has been an enjoyable watch! I've been in a slump to brush up my japanese for more than a year now. Now that i'm starting school at a japan's vocational school, i'm trying to find some sort of difference of perspectives or some sort to help build the motivation i once had. 🥲 but now i'm just gonna force myself to start and keep trying. Thank you for the podcast!

As a native Japanese speaker, I nominate Mui Mui, too. But she looks so Japanese that if you didn't know better, you'd think she's a Japanese who speaks native level Chinese, or vice versa or, you just don't know what she is. lol. But she probably doesn't get considered here because she's not an English speaker. But then you also gotta remember that videos are edited.

I would say he's not native level in English unless it's in an accent I'm not familiar with, mostly due to skipping words. This doesn't mean much, I'm sure he's fluent enough to say exactly what he wants. This makes native level pretty pointless imo. Why work on this elusive goal when you could become much better than a mean native at the skills you actually need?

I personally think anyone who didn't learn a language as a small child isn't native. just by definition they aren't. they can be fluent though. it's nothing wrong with being fluent. Being fluent is a huge achievement and tbh someone fluent can definitely be better at their TL than a native speaker. even native speakers make mistakes and pause to figure out what they want to say. I think it's toxic to get people obsessed with trying to be "native".

    • @larrybardwell8461
      @larrybardwell8461 Рік тому

i think someone can sound exactly like a native in their second language. After all natives were not born good at their native tongue. Were all born without language and acquired it. It was a foreign language to them when they first began as a toddler. But the issue is in replicating the native experience. Most people have lives and can't devote themselves all day everyday to it forever. It's also harder because you have to overcome your first language it gets in the way.

This guy is fluent in both English and Japanese to say the least, but NOT native level in either of those.
No offense, but I seriously doubt he can trick Japanese people into thinking he's native, even for 1 minute.
He says he's more confident in his English, but literally his every other sentence sounds a bit unnatural.
I'm not hating on the guy - I'm sure he can give good advice on how to get fluent, but in my opinion he is just an average dude who got GOOD at Japanese (and English) - but is he native level? Not even close.
