I got hooked on Marillion about 20 years ago when I saw an album cover of “The Thieving Magpie”. The artwork intrigued me so much I thought ‘What a cool theme for a band’. Once I listened I fell in love with the band. Steve Rothery is by far one of the best guitarists on this planet. The only other guitarist that matches up with him is Alex Lifeson from Rush. Steve Rothery not only plays music. He feels it. He capable of walking up to the front of a stage and completely mesmerizing an audience with such a haunting guitar solo it sends chills down your spine. If possible his guitar could speak into your soul , it’s amazing. You can truly feel his emotions through his music. There are only a handful of guitarists which can truly have the talent to do this. Although I’m a country music artist. I would be absolutely to have Steve Rothery be a guitarist for me in a project someday. I honestly believe he could do anything guitar related and have so much respect for him and the entire band.
You are an absolute delight Steve my daughter and I met you in San Francisco on the FEAR tour you welcomed us in line before the show we were in the front row ... you brought us to tears and met you after back stage!!!!! You are the real deal ... Thank You
We're Marillionaires, Rothie! From a 16 Year old little bloke born in México ('69) moved to British Columbia, Canada (Vancouver) ,,,telling You, You made my life. Darkest moments "Kaleigh" moved me to tears. You touched this kid's heart ❤️ and tenderly brought it back to life during my parent's divorce. We Love You
Steve mentions David Gilmour, Andy Latimer and Steve Hackett as his main influences. Oh my... these giants, icluding Steve of course, are in my musical life for over 40 years now. And they all still make great music to this day!
I was a poor Uni student when Marillion released Script and I remember thinking that guitarist is on fire. Watching Steve Rothery live is something everyone owes to themselves to do at least once in their life.
The ability to make you cry The ability to make you smile The ability to make you chill The ability to make you feel Marillion forever forever Marillion
What a nice man Steve comes across as. I only saw Marillion once on Thursday 5th November 1987 at Wembley Arena as an 18 year old & I can still remember it now as if it was yesterday. Steve's playing take us to another place & that is such a rare & precious gift he has.
An imposter ? Responsible for some of the most beautiful guitar solos EVER. Incubus. Just to name one of so many. THE most underrated guitarist ? Definitely vies with Gilmour as the one with the best feel.
"Pretty good" That's very modest. Steve, you've been my major influence and a reason I picked up the guitar in the first place, over 30 years ago. So for me, you've joined the ranks of the people who influenced you. Thanks for all the music :)
Five of the most laid back and humble geniuses around. Glad to have been touched by their music for so much of my life. Dreading them hanging up their instruments and having no shows or albums to look forward to. They will never be surpassed.
Happy to see Steve Rothery again. Marillion is, for me, the best rock band in active. Hoping to see them november 2021 in London. It would be the best gift after two strange years.
Steve, I've only gotten to see Marillion live once. 1997 in Cincinnati & IMHO I thought both you & Pete were BRILLIANT. I got to meet the entire band after the show & you all were so nice. I wish I'd had a camera & the money to have bought a tour shirt. Much love from Mark in Ohio !!!!!
Steve Rothery is such a great guitarist. I'm an avid follower of guitarists and I must say his solos are amazing. Such gut wrenching emotional playing. Rave on Steve!!!
Steve Rothery......the only guitarist to bring tears to my eyes. Always loved the Kayleigh solo and never really bothered with listening to you before and after that. Huge mistake. I've learnt from that mistake in January 2021 and I am now on a magical journey discovering all this great music I have missed. Amazing guitarist...Amazing band.
Changed the way I played guitar. I was lucky enough to meet him for a couple of seconds outside the tour bus after the Gateshead gig in 2019 for a hand shake and to get him to sign my stuff. Such a great guy!
I feel the same...his playing added to my approach as a guitarist. I got to shake his hand on the Seasons End tour and I couldn’t believe how fortunate I was.
I had the great oportunity to watch SR and Band in Rio de janeiro, a few years ago, in a small theatre downtown. An experience i Will never forget. Thanks, Steve. And come back as soon as possible.
I had the pleasure of meeting Steve post ghosts of the Prypiat gig.I am a massive Marillion fan.And he is exactly the same in person as on this vid.A totally thoroughly nice guy,no pretentions ,thanking you for some incredible music.
Steve, you’re certainly not an imposter. I learned every guitar part on Misplaced when I was 16 in the mid-80s and some of your approaches have become a distinct part of my style. I won’t soon forget your influence.
I feel a small sense of pity for Marillion. They are one of my favourite bands and definite influences. I wish they could hear themselves as objectively as we do. So they could fall in love with their music too. Especially Steve R's incredible melodic solos.
Steve is an underrated guitar player, even in this interview he felt himself in the past as an imposter as he said,It's funny how he find how good It was rediscovering an álbum made It in 1991,so hilarious, for me It was so good right from the start even when he was a Young lad making his first album, his tone, good taste to put a good note in the right place, make more sense for me than lots of notes going nowhere, although he's capable to play faster if he would, but he's mòving in another path.Such an humble bloke.
Steve solos transport me to places, beautiful places, make me feel something all the time, the Somewhere Else guitar solo for example, God that one hit my heart and soul like a subway train, Maestro.
I’m so glad you mentioned The Great Escape as a favorite of yours. That song is crushingly emotional and powerful, enough to bring me to tears more often than not upon relistening. Definitely one of my favorites, and the phrasing on the guitar is impeccable.
I grew up here in Brazil listening to you play since 1980, I followed all the evolution of the band and also yours as an instrumentalist, and you are great.
Come on, this is not fair - 11 min with the man from 1979 - 2021......I`m thankful that I`ve meet you so many times Steve & a huge "Thank you" for all this amazing music that you have given us.
Bloody hell, you're not only pretty good, but you are, for thousands and thousands of people, including people who PLAY (like me), simply the best, Mr. Rothery.
First time seeing Marillion in 1983 at the Lowell Showboat in Michigan opening for Utopia. Hook from that day forward, best unrated band there is as is Steve as a guitarist. His solo’s are beyond great!
who clicked "dislike"! What a humble guy - the imposter syndrome comment probably comes from not soloing with a thousand notes a second every time but instead making every note count! Steve you have created a style that is simply your own that is both recognisable and yet beautifully surprising everytime! Thank you.
Steve R. I am Brazilian and I am very happy that all the members of the band cite my country as one of the moments immortalized in their memories. And you made me even happier, when you were in the city where I live, Santos / SP, visiting a beloved fan of the band, and generously played wonderfully as always, one of your memorable songs, accompanied by musicians from the city. You are my Hero, my admiration for everything you create elevates my Soul. Thank you.🎸❤ I love Marillion! ❤
Steve, thank you for tons of inspiration. I always look up to your solos, the melodies you create are just another world. Thanks to you I always think of melody first in my playing. With just a few notes you can move my heart. Thank you.
...btw. Steve, hearing you voice for the first time: have you ever considered to do radio plays or something like this? Your voice is as soothing as our guitar hand is inspiring 😇
Hey, you are bloody good! You are not the fastest and I know exactly what your playing and I can't make it sound as beautiful and soulful as you do! You are clearly a great musician, thanks for uncounted beautiful moments!
Steven Rothery, co-founding member of Marillion ( previously known as Silmarillion ). A guitarist whose style encapsulates the history of British prog guitarists ( namely Dave Gilmour, Steve Hackett andAndy Latimer ). He changed the history of British rock music..no more, no less.
A guitar solo like you did in almost every song ment a certain kind of guide line to truth through its sraightness. Music speaks to your heart and therefore avoids confusion of mind. This literally helped me survive my younger years. Thank you dearly for that 🙏❤️🙏
Hi Steve Rofthery I'm collin from Liverpool I love everything you guys song you all are truly amazing band I love you guys your fantastic and a legend to stay safe Steve
Steve you are the guitar guy that never end up on the best of list, but you realy deserve the time in the light, i have some classic guy’s from Zappa to John Petrucci but you mr Rothery, are at the very top!
Steve Rothery is one of most melodic guitar players in prog rock history. It’s a shame that his technique is not featured in more detail for the current generation of players to learn from him. Cheers
Great to see you looking so well, Steve, congrats on the weight loss. You have been one of the more significant inspirations in my musical development over many years, and I hope you will continue to be for many more!
I agree, Sugar Mice has one of the finest guitar solos of all time. I'm convinced John Petrucci of Dream Theatre had a good listening to that, before recording Metropolis pt.2.
Ahhh I can’t believe that my favorite song ever “The great escape “ is the favorite of my favorite guitarist, the greatest Rothery. 👏🏼❤️🎸🙌🏼 🥰, and yes, you’re pretty good, I mean you are the best 🏆🥇
Thank you all of you for doing these lovely little videos. And thank you for all of they years of great music. All the great albums have become more important to me as time moves forward.
Fabulous interview. A man with immense talent along with all the other band members. Long live Marillion. Looking forward to seeing you in Edinburgh in November.
Best interview of the lot. Good to hear the shout outs for Afraid Of Sunlight plus Invisible Man from Marbles and The Great Escape from Brave. Those three albums to me are the heartbeat of the worlds of Marillion. Good to hear Holidays In Eden is in the deluxe edition planning stage. It was the first album I heard with H and my gateway to the rest of the back catalogue.
Cheers for doing this Steve and the rest of the mob. I still have all my picture discs and albums from the fish period signed along with a drum stick from Ian and a Gibson pic of yours from Newcastle city hall early mid 80’s Thanks for the memories Looking forward to new ones in the future
I never knew about Marillion until I saw a version of Season's End done by Fleesh about two years ago. I asked myself 'who's Marillion', so I looked them up and was wow'ed, especially with Mr. Rothery's playing. Great band, great guitarist. Steve is now one of my all time favorite guitarists.

Steve: "Bloody hell, I *am* pretty good aren't I? Bit of a revelation."
Rest of the planet: "Yes Steve. You are."
He's dropped weight, looking good Steve. Keep it up
You are an absolute delight Steve my daughter and I met you in San Francisco on the FEAR tour you welcomed us in line before the show

I just wish David Gilmour would give Steve Rothery the accolade he deserves. But what a fine quartet!
Fabulous musician. "Easter" is to me the greatest guitar solo of all time
So true😎
Me too 👍
Me too
So feeling
It's got to be this strange engine but who cares he's a genius
Steve can play a single note and somehow make it the most beautiful sound you've ever heard.
I was a poor Uni student when Marillion released Script and I remember thinking that guitarist is on fire. Watching Steve Rothery live is something everyone owes to themselves to do at least once in their life.
Marillion are a bunch of nice down to earth guys with no pretense or ego
The ability to make you cry
The ability to make you smile
The ability to make you chill
The ability to make you feel
Marillion forever forever Marillion
Thanks Steve Rothery, is my Hero!! Love Marillion.❤

I was there too
I've never felt envy for no man, now I'm envious of 2!
An imposter ? Responsible for some of the most beautiful guitar solos EVER. Incubus. Just to name one of so many. THE most underrated guitarist ? Definitely vies with Gilmour as the one with the best feel.
Great comment
In my opinion he took the blueprint from Gilmour and Latimer, and made it even greater
Incubus and Chelsea Monday my favs. This man still give to me so pleasant times...especially with Pete, Mark, Ian and F🤚
Many of us think you're one of best guitar players ever.
It's about musical connection. You're the ultimate at achieving that.
"Pretty good" That's very modest. Steve, you've been my major influence and a reason I picked up the guitar in the first place, over 30 years ago. So for me, you've joined the ranks of the people who influenced you. Thanks for all the music :)

Incredible musician
Love Steve's phrasing on Easter solo... And a very humble person with it..Just like Alex Lifeson. The mark of a genius
One of the greatest feel guitarist of all time.... Incredible....

I hate the work 'underrated'. Unrecognised is a great word for this guy. Melody and passion. Incredible player 👏
Exactly!
My favourite guitarist of all time!
Steve Rothery is such a great guitarist. I'm an avid follower of guitarists and I must say his solos are amazing. Such gut wrenching emotional playing. Rave on Steve!!!

He can make grown men cry with a guitar solo. #neverland
Changed the way I played guitar.

that's not Luck... that's Providence
Completely underrated musician.
Best Guitarist ❤
I had the great oportunity to watch SR and Band in Rio de janeiro, a few years ago, in a small theatre downtown.

The main reason why i love Marillion is this guy! Much love and health to you and the band from 🇨🇾
Steve is such a lovely guy. He was so good to give me his time for my radio interviews which was much appreciated.
Steve, you’re certainly not an imposter. I learned every guitar part on Misplaced when I was 16 in the mid-80s and some of your approaches have become a distinct part of my style. I won’t soon forget your influence.
Your playing is so emotionally charged and is so expressive.. . I touches my soul and so many times over .. you are a musical treasure Mr Rothery 😊❤

Saw that tour in Toronto. Andy Ward was on drums!
So happy that I've been able to see him play live from 7 rows back in a small theatre.
One of my favorite guitar players, his sound and "feel" as a player is on an other level, reminds me of Gilmour and Hacket, his solos are soooo good
who clicked "dislike"! What a humble guy - the imposter syndrome comment probably comes from not soloing with a thousand notes a second every time but instead making every note count! Steve you have created a style that is simply your own that is both recognisable and yet beautifully surprising everytime! Thank you.
The same two dicks who disliked H’s interview
Best guitar tone ever, I get shivers listening to Steve’s solos. What a legend!
Tks for all these years
Always loved his mix of Roland Jazz Chorus and Marshall Amps. Great (and distinct) tone!
Steve R. I am Brazilian and I am very happy that all the members of the band cite my country as one of the moments immortalized in their memories. Great comment...
and God help Brazil in these times
@@byronofcalgary6985 thanks my friends, god bless you!🙏
Goosebumps everytime I hear his solo’s
Your playing touches me like no other person has ever be able to do. You bring me joy, sadness and elation. And you are still extremely handsome 😍
Steve, thank you for tons of inspiration. I always look up to your solos, the melodies you create are just another world. Thanks to you I always think of melody first in my playing. With just a few notes you can move my heart. Thank you.
Stunning powers of expression. A phenomenonal sense of melody. An absolutely thrilling lead guitarist 🙇♂️
...btw. Steve, hearing you voice for the first time: have you ever considered to do radio plays or something like this? Your voice is as soothing as our guitar hand is inspiring 😇
Humble , all of them , Steve is right up there with the Steve's : Hackett and Howe
The kind of guitarist that every wanna be guitarist strives to be.
Keep it up Steve👍
The best band I've ever come across thank you for being something to believe in this crazy world..
Magnifique, des génies de la musique que l on écoute pendant des heures avec plaisir
Hey, you are bloody good! You are not the fastest and I know exactly what your playing and I can't make it sound as beautiful and soulful as you do! You are clearly a great musician, thanks for uncounted beautiful moments!

Slainte Mhath and Childhoods End. Great playing! Not enough space to name the rest😉

Awesome guitarist my 2 faves Gilmour & Rothery 👌👌
The most important musician in my life!
One of the best guitar players out there, in my opinion...
What a f legend. What a guitar player he is, in rarified air among very very few.
Just a pure unsung hero
Steve Rothery is one of most melodic guitar players in prog rock history. It’s a shame that his technique is not featured in more detail for the current generation of players to learn from him. Cheers
When i was born he already a legend!! Love before m. H and love even more since they together
one word, the master.... one day I will play like you!!!
Steve , you are a master of the guitar! Keep going ! Please!
STEVE!!! :) All of them so humble...
Great to see you looking so well, Steve, congrats on the weight loss. You have been one of the more significant inspirations in my musical development over many years, and I hope you will continue to be for many more!
Amazing guitar player, fantastic person !!!
Aaaah, the movie soundtrack influence explains SO much! Thank you for sharing, Steve.
Nice to see Rothers back in the studio.
I absolutely love his emotive style ... Sugar Mice and Incubus are absolute killer guitar solos .
I agree, Sugar Mice has one of the finest guitar solos of all time. I'm convinced John Petrucci of Dream Theatre had a good listening to that, before recording Metropolis pt.2.
Long life of Marillion! Forever and ever!!!!
A great many goosebumps and emotional highs over time. Much love for your guitar playing.

BEST GUITARIST IN THE WORLD! Not even close!
