- Prem Chopra was born into a Hindu Punjabi family in Lahore in 1935. Following the partition of India, his family relocated to Shimla, where he was raised. Despite his father's aspirations for him to become a doctor or an IAS officer, he embarked on a journey to become an actor. He was a trailblazer in introducing the concept of handsome villains, deviating from the stereotype of venom-spewing characters with expected dialogues.
After completing his graduation, he moved to Mumbai and initially worked in the circulation department of The Times of India. He made his debut film in the Punjabi movie 'Chaudhary Karnail Singh' which won the National Film Award for Best Punjabi Film in 1961.
Prem Chopra was a prominent villain in Hindi films, peaking from 1967 to 1994. During the '70s, he secured notable villainous roles, alongside actors like Sujith Kumar and Ranjeet.
In the recent ANI Podcast with Smita Prakash, Prem Chopra reflects on his experiences during the partition days and how he ventured into theatre after moving to Shimla. He shares insights into landing his first hit movie and discusses why he gravitated towards villain roles.
Being in the industry for six decades, Prem Chopra took on fewer villainous roles post-1999, transitioning to positive character roles and increasingly received such roles from 2005 onwards. However, his screen time in films was reduced after 2005. He recently appeared in Ranbir Kapoor's film 'Animal.'

Smita needs to let the moments breathe. Eg let Mr Chopra talk about his memories of working with Dev Anand, rather than then asking a question about shooting overseas.

I met Prem saab in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman. I used to work in a hotel and he had come to Oman with a bunch of actors for one of those " Film Star Nite" kind of programs. I used to work in the health club and he came to the pool area and we talked for a long time. He was so nice to talk to. I met a lot of film characters in my time. The one thing they do not want is people asking them repeatedly to say some dialogue from their movies. As long as you don't do that, they are the most friendly people. Prem saab was classy.

Smita ji, you are really good but excellence is yet to be achieved. Preparing and having an outline is very good. But It is like script of a movie in the hands of a film director. The trick is when something unplanned evolves ex tempor, letting it emerge and shine. That is how next level of excellence comes in. Sometimes you cut it by a comment or give a cue, suppressing something outstanding. If you do that ( spot and control urge to intervene) you will become the BEST in the class. Just a scope for improvement from a happy well wiser! All the best

With due respect to the punjabis one thing i noticed.gujus tk pride in being gujarati.maharashtirans in being Marathi same with bengalis n biharis etc.but i dont see the same in punjabis.watched sushmita sens interview n she connected so well to her bengali roots.punjabis rarely know to speak their mother tongue.thts my observation.maybe i m wrong.
Not all Punjabis but the one which have pakistani background as you know just like india has Punjab province similarly Pakistan has its own Punjab province and those yesteryears veteran actor with Pakistani Punjab background sometimes feels uncertain on how to express their ethnic lineage especially if you take into consideration the tragedy associated with separation from their motherland in childhood with bitter memories of partition still hunted somewhere in their mind. That's might be one of the reason.

People PRAISE Dilip Kumar as Best Actor, but Dear Smita PRAKASH, I will let you know on Amazing fact which you should Dig out as a Correspondant, that Dilip Kumar Has pointed out himself is that, he was taught the basic Nuances of ACTING by His 'Mentor' ASHOK KUMAR , that acting Should be NATURAL as being Self (being in SKIN of CHARECTER ) not Dramatic as Dilip Kumar used to portray as Being too THEATRIC in early FILMs , Ashok Kumar is not remembered on Podcast as What Stalwart he was who was also Mentor like Guide of Devanand and to prove my point said Above see JEWEL THIEF starring Ashok Kumar, Devanand, Vaijayantimala, and I believe this film become plot of REAL life THEFT to play Cross DOUBLEed identity which was used to get away as Innocent and in REAL-LIFE played on That Double-Crossed (cross doubled) in Real life to get away with and Fool out targeter with full no fool-proof plan then movie was made that Robber but infact it was Otherway Round.
