I am Gen X, I was also a collector. I finally broke that habit, but it’s hard. I never collected for the money value of it, I collected things I like. But it can be a money drain and it takes up space. I now have it narrowed down to one curio cabinet and one corner shelf.
I feel old when you talk about collecting. I remember the pet rock, cabbage kids, beanie babies, Pokémon cards. But you also made me think about what I now collect and apparently it’s Buddha statuettes (have one in nearly every room). I’ve always collected music (cds and cassettes), but I recently bought a record player and now I go to thrift stores searching for albums. But my music collections are tastefully organized and in cabinets.
Youre so so right on every point here - and for other reasons too. They dont seem to be interetsted in character. We have a 1940's deco house, we restored the period features - but i have a mix of new and antique/ functional but interesting. SOmeone asked me why my house looked so lovely/beautiful yet there was no real definition of the style, I said I just buy what I love and represents me, and over time it evolves to be a reflection of who you are. I do have friends with instagram houses and re-decorate every few years, I have no interest in the latest look, I dont have the energy to do that every few years.
loved your "fast cheap or looks good" rule of thumb. in construction we used "time cost or results" and told customer "you get to pick two" works every time and everyone knows how to proceed.
Arden is too adorable, so huggable. Collectibles are so fun and interesting as long as they are well curated. Sometimes it’s hard to see your own mistakes and things just look like clutter. Sigh…
Just recently discovered you! Moving soon to a new construction and I’m slightly overwhelmed. You are speaking to my millennial heart and that I want to create a peaceful, timeless environment that I’ve never had in a home.

For non-designers, the 70-20-10 color rule can be very helpful. And, there's nothing wrong with purchasing some opening price point pieces that can later be used elsewhere as budget permits replacement. It is completely possible to create a wonderful space without falling victim to design/retail snobbery and budget overruns.

❤That's why I LOVE this channel. Garrett shows us how we can incorporate some trend-like pieces into our homes but in a way that will never go out of style. No more design purgatory.❤
Thrilled i caught your video early when i can like, comment, and hopefully contribute to helping push this video to a broader audience. Really sound, practical advice..as always. Gen x here, but this advice still applies. Thank you!
I wish the "all grey and farm house" situation will finally go away. However I don't see any new trends aiming to replace these ones. I see a lot of the same items in the stores so I imagine there's nothing new out there. Thanks Garrett!
Millenial here 👋 "collecting" is a thing. Its just also figuring how to make sure it doesnt turn into a large collection of collections. I have been doing much better over the last couple years of really listening to myself, but also taking advantage of trends if they align with the home i want to have.
Congratulations on your new addition, Garrett! Arden is one lucky doggie! He couldn't have found a better home! Wishing you all the best, always. With respect to collections: someone in Toronto was selling a complete collection of K.L.M. delft blue houses, last year, for CA$3000, which is a fantastic price. I watched the eBay auction, as I'm sure many others did, tempted, but didn't get it, in the end, because I know I don't have the space to display that collection properly, in my little house. Honestly, though, I still regret it, 'cause... damn, it was the COMPLETE set.
Valid advice about trends; it does not have to be all or nothing. Again, it is so refreshing, and a sign of a trained interior designer, that you emphasize the need to find your own design style. Arden is a natural star (just as you are) 😎
I collect Wedgewood, and I’m fixing to start renovating my dinning room. For starters I am knocking down the 1980’s popcorn ceiling and removing the corresponding wallpaper and moving and upgrading the chandelier to a crystal one. However there is a built in china cabinet and a lot of beautifully stained woodwork. I noticed millennials tend to paint any and all wood, for my fellow millennials DO NOT PURCHASE UNIQUE HOMES AND THEN PAINT EVERY INCH OF WOODWORK. I am leaving the wainscoting but where there is wall paper (1980’s affordable wallpaper) I am doing an off white Roman clay finish coupled with a wall of wedgewood decorative plates on one wall. I apologize for the comment being everywhere, I’m just so excited for the upcoming process. Also, millennials expensive “designer” pieces do not equate to high end finishes. Also if you live in the suburbs you do not need to shiplap your home to hell and back and have a sign in your kitchen that says kitchen (I live in Texas and this is so common). And if you have an idea do not jump into DIY’ing without a mood board and a mountain of research.
First off hugs to adorable 🥰 Arden! I am not a millennial but Gen X (I think) but I never knew that millennials were such collectors. I display what I like but I do rotate between the months of the year and store away the rest- not too many either as storage space is limited. Creating a curated collection but know when enough is enough. Excellent work Garrett!! Love my Sunday afternoon with the LeChic family! 🌴🦩☀️☺️😍😊🥰❤️🥰❤️🥰❤️
Hello Garrett ! Thank you for helping us find our design style. I have a secretary desk with 3 selves. I have books and blue/white dishes displayed. I just love how cozy it makes the room and it is great storage space for small items you want to display. I think everyone should have some version of a secretary desk. There are modern ones and antique ones.
Do you have any idea how much stress and anxiety RELIEF you have given your viewers . The importance of finding a selection of quality pieces from different designs that complement each other and make your home unique and cohesive, not just a showroom-style, rushed dictated set, is so much more fun….and yes, organized, clean, decluttered, cozy, and stylish can all be done on a budget. Then you don’t have a dated look in as little as two to three years. I feel like trends are changing as quick as dictated updates on our phones, making people feel pressured to then spend, spend, spend. Love your adorable dog and your channel! ❤
Beanie babies and Pokémon really set us millennials up to have that impulse to feel like you’ve “gotta catch ‘em all!” Brilliant work from the marketing team, however transparent and honest it sure worked!
My three colours are : pomegranat, teal or seagreen, ivory.....it is so great, that I know now....each colour should be there in 3 Shades!!!! I am going to bring that into my Home....and I am very much looking forward to elevate the mood of the rooms with that!!!!! Thank You, Garrett!!!!!!!!!❤

There’s a quote that goes “when a woman says she has nothing to wear, what she’s really saying is there’s nothing in my closet that matches who I am today.” My decor mistake is that I like a home with very different vibes from room to room. Both architectural and color. Stone English cottage kitchens. Pale blue or green minimal bedrooms with soft rugs. Industrial loft office. I know it’s in-cohesive mismatch. But some days I feel classy velvet dark blue, others days pastels and eyelet. Love to hear more on how to deal with loving an extreme variety of design

3 is just a starting point, just use a color in three ways, plus its nice to find a pattern that has all the colors used, like a rug or accent chair!
