Several well-known college football pundits have weighed in on Michigan’s blowout loss this past Saturday, framing it as a signature win for Texas that could propel them toward a national championship. Texas fans are celebrating as though they just defeated the same Michigan team that won last year’s national title. However, the reality is far different. Texas capitalized on a severely depleted Michigan roster, with a new head coach, a completely revamped coaching staff, and the fallout from three consecutive underwhelming recruiting cycles-compounded by huge losses to graduation, the NFL, and a roster ranked 130th out of 131 FBS teams in returning production.
The hard truth is that Michigan’s roster and leadership losses created the perfect storm for this result, but many pundits and fans seem to ignore what actually transpired.
This year’s Michigan team is a shadow of the one that claimed the title last season. They aren’t even comparable to the team that was soundly beaten by TCU in the national semifinal two years ago, or the group that was dominated by Georgia in the semifinals the year prior. Michigan’s current state is a far cry from the Bo Schembechler era, when the team never suffered a blowout. Since Bo’s retirement, Michigan has endured 16 blowout losses over the last 31 years, typically at the hands of elite programs that Michigan is no longer a part of-a reality that fans and pundits alike seem unwilling to accept.
Texas is undoubtedly a championship-caliber team with a strong chance of winning it all this year, and I wish them the best! But their true measuring stick will be the upcoming matchups against elite competition, like Georgia, and the grind of the conference schedule-not a dominant win over a severely depleted Michigan team.
