This Sketchbook Session I talk about drawing for the sake of drawing and how to make it enjoyable again.
There’s a number of things that can get in the way of our creativity - and one of the major ones is over-thinking the technical side of an illustration. This essentially short circuits your creativity and cuts off your natural, artistic intuition.
In turn, drawing is no longer fun, and what’s worse, anything we do draw will feel uninspired.
Unfortunately, we all fall into this habit, especially when we’re in the learning phase. Even after that, after we’ve learned all the in’s and out’s of drawing, it can be hard to unleash our creativity. We forget how to enjoy the process of drawing. The rules we learned to help us, ultimately confine us.
We’ve got to remember that the fundamentals of drawing best serve us as tools, to help us along the way when we get stuck. If we think of them like that, then we’re able to work within the context of our ideas. We can think and express freely, without being worried about the technical aspects of the drawing because we know once that idea is captured, it can be constructed using those drawing principles - but not beforehand.
Creativity can be stimulated by drawing for the sake of drawing. Actively setting aside some time throughout the day, to sit down with your sketchbook and just draw whatever comes to mind will condition your mind to generate ideas more readily. At the same time, it’ll help take the edge off having to make your art perfect.
Sketching in this way can be extremely relaxing, and the coolest part is, because your mind is relaxed and open it’s very likely you’ll come up with ideas that are surprisingly original. You might even take those ideas and build upon them, refine them and turn them into something real. To become more creative you must transition into a state of creativity - that’s what I want to talk to you about in this video.
I hope you’ll follow along with a sketchbook and pencil, and sketch out some of your own ideas while you listen.
    Enjoy
    -Clayton

Just from simply watching this video and mimicking how you drew these 2 faces, I've been able to structure my heads in proportion to the body so much easier in my sketches. The fine details are still hard for me, but the feeling of what I envision in my head gets translated so much better into paper now. I would genuinely love if you just do a series where you sit and talk while drawing various things like arms, legs, or even backgrounds or clothing without trying to perfect them. Good video.

Catching this a few days late. Been on skillshare and saw your new class up.This is exactly what I neeed as a new artist hitting burnout. Think I’ve been focused on construction and gesture accuracy so much it’s been killing the fun and creativity. I’m watching all this.
