Logistics hell, the AI shouldn't even attempt inland invasions and instead try exclusively to perfom amphibious landings instead. It's a manpower and equipment death trap to invade through 10% infrastructure jungle filled with rivers
I honestly think it has something to do with how the AI treats things, and that they were all able to secure a peninsula quickly; sweden immediately took out norway, vietnam kinda cheated and start out really strong for the area they're at (china is busy fighting a 12 front war and the ai always has relatively even frontlines, never thinking macro strategy, so they aren't really an issue), and korea starts out as one with China being it's only neighbor (and they aren't as much of an issue as you'd think due to the above). Naval invasions aren't really a thing for the most part, especially early on, so being able to stick mostly to an easily defendable geographical position does wonders.

it's actually better to fix something, because the odds are initially too uneven. The English not only have superiority in army and economy with a bunch of manpower, but also an ideal geographical position. Alliances could be made according to language groups: Romance, Germanic, Slavic, Turkic + Mongolian, etc. but at the same time, of course, separate English into a separate alliance from the German
