Bobcat 743 Axle Bearings & Seals Replacement Nightmare 743B 742 wheel

- This 1990 Bobcat 743 was purchased by a friend about two years ago with bad axle bearings and seals on the right side. We replaced the right side bearings and seals at that time. This Spring the left rear axle bearings gave out and he continued to use it until the bearings were turned into little pieces of metal. Some damage was done to the axle tube and the axle, I welded the tube as best as possible, and the axle will probably be ok. The access in the chain case is VERY limited for the rear axle, the front is not too bad.
This is a pretty difficult job, it took me about 10-12 hours, and I would not do it again

That driveway has seen it's share of spilled oil! I clean it up after to keep the wife happy

It's been a LONG time since I have seen a working 743. I still have my olf 843 rusting in the backyard. Maybe one day I will try and fix it.

Nice job! I did the same thing last winter, only the drivers side rear. It sucked! I did not remove the inner race because did not think of that nice homemade threaded rod tool that you made. Also liked how you loosened the axle bolt by turning over the engine. Only thing missing from this video is how you installed the oil seals. I used some wood wedges...
I also used wood blocks to install the axle seals along with a large pry bar to fully seat them. The job was pretty awful but it was for a good friend. Thanks for watching, and hopefully subscribing!
Just out of curiosity….and because I have an old 732 that may need doing soon, what sets the preload on the bearings? Is there a mechanical stop on the shaft that stops them over tightening the bearings into the outer race? Just wondering because I know if you do any kind of taper wheel bearings on a trailer or the front hub on a car without backing them off a bit they fail real quick.
I'm not sure if there's a preload, the torque spec for the nut was pretty high, I think over 250 ft lbs. These are slow speed bearings so I don't think bobcat put too much thought into it

Hi, is there a sleeve that goes on the axle for the lip seal to run on? I cant make out the part number? Thanks
There's IS a sleeve, without it the seal will leak, badly. Check the video description for part numbers

Great video, thank you. Already removed my engine and hydraulic unit and these bolts sucuuuuck! What is the 658477 part? Looks like a graphite sleeve, I did NOT get that in my repair kit. First time doing this so all 4 are getting it. Thank you
The sleeve is metal, it fits on the axle where the seal rides, you'll want to replace them

Okay just me again. After 2 weeks I was finally able to sort out what bearings I needed. Races will be in tonight, outer bearings were pressed last night. My one last question. What was your trick to getting the inner bearings into the shaft? My bearings slide down to where the spline is then after that I know it's going to be tight. Any input appreciated, I don't have to cover plates on this machine practically doing the backs by feel.
For the inner bearings I put them on the shaft then installed the bolt and tightened it, that pulled the inner bearing to where it is supposed to be.

Hey seadoo, maybe you could help me. I previously said in a comment I have a 440b that's ready for the same treatment. After calling bobcat and getting quoted 700+ do get all of the bearings, races, and seals I remember seeing you use duralast bearings for this machine. That made me curious on how you found those bearings for the machine. Did you have a part number that worked, did you measure and stand in the parts store looking? I'm struggling to find the bearings and seals for my machine without breaking the bank. Loaders parts source and all skid steers can't get me what I need even with them both saying they are in stock. Any help would be appreciated!
I found the old bearings had part numbers on them so I used Google to cross reference the number and found the exact match at the parts store. The races are usually easy to find one you know which bearing you have
@@SeaDooEric I appreciate the info. I'm in the garage trying to cross reference as we speak. Seems like the newer s70 version runs the identical drivetrain of an older 440b. I'm on the scent now just gotta finish tracking!
Check the Timken website too, they have CAD drawings of every bearing imaginable

Torches are a must along with my homemade bearing installer. It's just tight quarters and labor intensive
Can you tell me whats required to make the race install tool
I used 3/4 thick threaded rod with 2 thick washers that I reinforced with 3/8 inch plate steel on each end. The washers are slightly larger than the bearing race.

@@SeaDooEric I have an 843 I'm thinking about doing possibly but oil is cheap. I was just curious in the method that you used to get the nuts loose looks like with mine I have to possibly move the motor and hydro pump or separate the gearbox from the chassis not sure
In the video I showed how I loosened the bolts but turning the engine over with a wrench on the bolt

I had to lift the pump with ratchet straps, it's tight quarters!
