When there was a little girl probably over 57 years ago, I got tears coming to my eyes when I would hear this. I would be full of emotion, crying, and smiling at the same time.
Bobby was the nicest guy. They say he was a "one hit wonder". After his singing career, he worked at the Highway Department for Massachusetts. A gentleman to everyone all the time, with the biggest smile.
This song was about his Brother who was killed by a gunman…knowing that entirely changed the meaning of the song for me. One Hit Wonder? It don’t matter…
Got to see Bobby perform this live in August, 1966. He was one of the "warm-up acts" which preceded The Beatles' concert at Crosley Field in Cincinnati. The irony of it was, the night before, it was raining so hard that they had to postpone the concert until the next day at noon. It turned out to be a beautiful, cloudless and sunny day and Hebb opened the show with this number. Talk about irony. Ah, the memories.
It was both. He wrote this song for his brother who was stabbed to death. Listen to the lyrics,,, no matter how bad things get, theirs always a bright side. Ironically, his brother died the same day as JFK
To call it raw talent is a bit unfair. He is obviously a well schooled jazz guitarist. So refined would be more like it. Still a lot of soul in his performance.
Waddayamean bad ass version? This is the only version worth a damn. Back when good music was music and this junk today is just that…junk, trash or whichever version you want to call it.
Our daughter-in-law just had her second baby, a girl, during this quarantine. She named her Sunny Olivia and I have never heard a name so beautiful. I sent her a link to this classic song and she loved it. Perfect 🌸💕
I'm Sunnee and my parents used to play it every year for my birthday my mom still does and I'm 45 I was born in 1975 this song came out in 1976 I feel honored
@@sunneehennessee6003 Came out in 1966. It was so popular, the radio stations played it a lot, right thru the mid seventies, so I heard it the whole time I was growing up, I was born 1960. Both my parents were into music, so they played the radio anytime we went somewhere in the car, so I got turned on to all the great songs of the 60's. That why I asked my mom to buy me a portable record player in 1970. It was red and white plastic and folded shut like a suitcase and only played 45's, and my mom bought me 4 records with it, Satisfaction by the Stones, Light my Fire by the Doors, Ain't no Mountain High Enough by Dianna Ross and the Supremes, and Tears of a Clown by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, I was so excited about. having my own record player! And there was so much good music to choose from!

That man has a heart strong as steel. Bobby hebb composed this song as a tribute to his brother who passed away. He wanted to be grateful for the life he shared with his brother. He didn't break down even once. Strength of a real man.
I remember driving with my mother and brothers. Mom would take all 3 boys and cruise the back roads of the Bay Area and listen to music...this song meant a great to me because my Dad's family called Sonny...
I've loved this song since I was a kid. This live version is incredible! I love how it's just him, how it's full of key changes, and how passionate he is. I'll always appreciate this song.
Great! My mom used to love this song also. He brought the kind of purity and simplicity and pure talent that Bill Withers would bring later. I miss turning on the radio and hearing this kind of music.
I heard this song back in the early 1980s while riding in the car with my mom. I was about ten or eleven then and it was a bad time in our life. Recession, racial backlash, nightmares of Vietnam and Korea and divorce. But when this song played, I saw my mother for the very first time sing, cry, and smile all at once. She then told me it was her favorite song and it was the song she and my father danced to when they met and wed. Then I remembered something. The day they finalized their divorce, my father came home to gather the last of his things. My parents remained civil (for my sake) but even at the age of five, I could see they were both hurting inside. They kissed each other on the cheek and then hugged each other. Just before my father walked out he said something to my mother. She paused and went over to the HiFi (yeah I'm old) and pulled a record out of its sleeve. They slow danced for what seemed like an eternity in front of me. I still didn't appreciate what was going on. When the record stopped my father gave me a hug and kiss and grabbed his suitcase and rushed outside. My mother then took the record and slowly threw it in the trash. Although I didn't remember the lyrics I do remember the melody, it was "Sunny". It still grabs my heart...
This is a wonderful, bittersweet story, thank you for sharing it with us. I feel like I can see your parents slow dancing to this, like a scene from a movie. So fitting that the song itself is a bittersweet one, celebrating life and loss. Maybe it is too personal to ask but I would love to know how your parents life played out, whether they found love with other people. I suppose even if they didn’t they clearly had a deep love for each other even if they couldn’t live with each other.
I NEVER knew who sang this! It was my favorite song that year. I was very liitle, young enough to still believe in Santa. I had my own version called "Santa" thanking him for the "nice gifts in my life!"🎶 😁

His album is great enjoyed by many. Me and my friend Paul used to listen to it all the time while hanging out were in our 30s now
He worked for Massachusetts living in Nashville til his death at 72? 🤔 something don’t make sense
Sunnys older brother was murdered, shortly after Bobby used that pain and Expressed his loss lyrically through song✌ the rest is history

Raw, no voice frills, original by the original poet and master of his own creation.

It does have some minor chord qualities.
The song certainly has bittersweet qualities. A happiness born out of pain.
I always heard it as a happy song because it feels so full of hope.
So am I.
