this is the best comparison video i have ever seen. 9 out of 10 guys doing this kind of thing just waste your time.

Thanks man really appreciate it, keep it simple and let's just hear the pedals ✌️

Those pedal guts are practically 3D printed. Just crazy craftsmanship.

Right! Crazy tidy work only a few guys on this level and some of them charge waaaay more!

The cleanup on both is really fantastic. The insides are works of art. The difference between the two is subtle but noticeable. Definitely a matter of taste- they both sound really good.

The only problem with Germanium transistors (and diodes) is that as the room temperature of your "venue" (ie: stage, room, outdoors) changes (even as little as 5* F.!) so does the amount "leakage-current" between the emitter and collector of the transistor (or diode) change., which then can AND will change the amount AND tone of the "fuzz" you're getting., and is why as soon as the chemical technology advanced to be able to utilize silicone compounds in a BJT (aka: bipolar junction transistor) which are far more temperature AND gain stable (and FAR greater amplification-gain) that ALL electronic devices began the use of silicon BJTs., to say nothing of the GREAT increase in reliability & longevity they provide (Germanium degrades with time)., and the LARGE decrease in the amount of audio "hiss" (aka: junction noise-factor) of Germanium devices. >>> Just a bit of "techno-geek" info for those interested... :)

he's right you know.... - I just played a gig with my fav. vintage Germ. FF. and it was way, way quieter than usual. I assume because the room was warmer lolll. never the less, extremely annoying

There’s a touch more high-end with the silicon, that really comes out when it cleans up.
The germanium licks just sound killer, though!
All preference, I could take either and be happy.

Gorgeous pedal internals. I admire anyone taking the time to construct this way. You definitely need a clear bottom plate to Showcase those guts

Seems like the germanium kinda rolls off some of the highs or brings out the mid-low end vs. silicon. I think I prefer it over than the silicon tbh

Germanium is a bit warmer, the Si cuts a bit more but has excellent clean up for Si. Difference less noticeable with HBs

    Great video! Thanks!
I would add that some players like myself don't use the guitar volume control like that. I'd rather the amp stay clean no matter the volume of the guitar (or the amp).
The current amp settings allow the amp to distort along with the pedal, so we're not hearing the pedal alone.
But yes, excellent pedal and fantastic craftsmanship!

Overall I prefer the silicon. Both had that vortex decay fizz sound but the silicon had more clarity, making it more diverse. Now with a wah pedal it might be a different story but silicon would be more reliable and diverse iny opinion. Both did sound well made.

I have a Germanium bonamassa Fuzzface pedal that is cool but I wanted something more versatile and ordered a Thorpyfx field Marshall which I believe is Silicon. From what I have heard, Silicon is more stable where Germanium can be effected by temperature! probably more noticeable for those who will gig a lot!! anyway, this video is good. There isn’t a massive difference between the two pedals but it’s good to know! as some Germanium pedals will cost a lot more!!! like my Fuzzface which is something like 50 pounds/dollars above a standard Fuzzface

The silicon seems solid as far as silicon trs go.
The germ does not sound fat and is a little spitty on the cusp.
I'd say the brown sound resistors could be better for tr bias set-up, but that is providing they aren't too large in value to begin with and thus most likely would require redevelopment on a circuit board with trimmers (hard to crack that direct wiring layout as is).
Definately works of art and kind to have said that the germ is a bit too saggy on lower frequency, instead of being grunty.
Couldn't really see the pedals pot settings. 🤔
What was ambient temperature for the demo?
Stacks are usually better than humbuckers depending on the pedals input impedance. ✌❤

To my ear it seems the Germanium version is a bit more rounded in tone. Both sound similar.

Silicon had a bit more bite but surprisingly similar

  • @benebluesman

Nice, I can hear the difference, but not in some settings. Seems to my ear it's not until the gain is rolled back a bit that the difference is clear. Clan and full fuzz sound very much the same.

They're visible in the video. The germaniums are 2n1306 and the silicon 2n2102.
If you're planning on building yourself a germanium fuzz, I would suggest getting several and try them out. Messing around with biasing of both the first and second transistor also gives extra control. Some people even prefer to permanently set the fuzz to max and mess only with the bias for tone shaping.
Lots of fun to be had there, good luck!

When I see floating point to point pedals like these, I wonder what they are going to look like in a few years after components start to fail and you get some less artistic/sympathetic repair people hands in there...not very practical imho. pretty tho.
