Abandoned pedestrian tunnel enclosures in Altoona, PA

- Checking out a pair of enclosures that used to give access to an underground pedestrian tunnel that passes below 10th Avenue in Altoona, Pennsylvania. I found these while walking back to my hotel after watching a train, and later noticed at least one other pair while driving along 10th Avenue. They have been replaced with several pedestrian bridges crossing this busy street.

From what I understand the tunnel is no longer there.

They used to be underground tunnels they were build in the 1970s and closed because of homeless people and a girl being raped and beaten now they have been torn down now for about 3 weeks

Yeah, I think that's all it was, but it's odd that they closed it off since it's still a very busy street. There are a few pedestrian bridges, but they're a few blocks away.
Yep they are full of water now and have been for about 25 years at least . Rumor has it that they never installed any kind of drainage system .

@@JamieMakin yeah probably haha. My father told me they installed drains so filled up with water and were abandoned. Here's a fun fact under the Jaffa parking lot is a tunnel and a few large rooms . I'm not sure what they were used for but it's a cool thing to know .

I remember coming across these for the first time. I heard they were gated up because illegal activities were taking place in them.
Ah! That somehow does not surprise me. Perhaps they should have put cameras in them and had cops hide in the bushes instead of gating them up.
Altoonan here - They flooded frequently and the homeless were using them for shelter/bathrooms. They haven't been open for decades. Rumor has it that the city was forced to install these as part of the grant money for the 10th Ave Expressway.

And the Altoona Pennsylvania police department has literally just blocks away so it's easier to close things up then to maybe check on them police them put some cameras in them along those lines

I've definitely been growing fonder of shorter videos, but I'm not a huge fan of the "shorts" that are under a minute. I think the next batch of videos in the queue hits the sweet spot for time. Will definitely keep in mind your feedback for future trips. Thanks for watching! 😊

We had tunnels at the university I went to just to keep people off the street.
If they had these unlocked I wouldn't have had to sprint across the road lol!
