We just found a roadkill fox in front of our driveway. My boyfriend skinned it (I couldn't go near it) but now that I have the pelt I'm ready to tan! I've tanned only deer in the past so this'll be my first fur. Thanks for the great video, it's by far the best one I've seen on UA-cam. Love your personality and your toenails!
Tanning is a way to pay homage to the traditions of America’s oldest ancestors - the Native Indians. It’s great to know these skills. You never know when mankind will need them again. Thank you for sharing man! God bless you!
Enjoyed the video, I tanned a Grey Fox like yours and used a piece of cable attached to a post to soften it. Got a good laugh when I realized your toenails were painted green.
Damn, where was this video when I was trying to learn what to do with a roadkill Fox a while ago... I just pulled my hide out of the crawl space under our house where it has had salt on it for a very long time. I didn't have the proper tools and didn't quite flush it well enough. Going to try to see if I can still make it work even after like a year. All of the other videos I found a while ago were so much more involved. You made it so much simpler to understand!
I'm actually planning to do the same thing soon. There's a roadkill fox that I hope the coyotes or buzzards don't get to within the next day or so. Hopefully it works out.
@@silentglacierfang if you can pick it up and put it on ice, you want to make sure it is as fresh as possible. Freezing is the most ideal from what I understand but I kept mine as cool as I could for the about 24 hours before I was able to process it after picking it up. my biggest regret was not springing for the proper tool for the job. A friend had knives I was able to borrow and helped me with the scanning but the fleshing tool would have been so helpful. Good luck!
I also salted a roadkill fox. Salted it last year and am just today in the process of tanning it. Hoping the fur doesn't slip too much from sitting for so long!
I have a red fox I found on the side of the road as well 😃 I pulled the skin off which took a lot of effort it was quite dry after a whole day in the work vehicle but I put it in the freezer and now I've finally got the black wattle bark and ready to go thanks so much for showing me how to do it
Hey dude! This video was so helpful. I'm working on a red fox myself, but he's tubed and still has face & feet. I'm wondering how stretching him would work with this method, or if I ought to just build a stretcher in addition to the fleshing beam I need to make? Thanks. :D
I literally just came to this video because I found a nice red tail fox hit by a car on the side of the road. He wasn't mangled at all so I threw him in the trunk. Tied a rope to it and drug it around the yard and my dog followed the track perfectly and found it hidden behind a trailer. Think I'm gonna skin it and tan it! Thanks for the video!!
I totally didn’t get my first try right so can I re-soak the hide and try again?? I defleshed it but I definitely did not apply the tanning solution correctly
I'm using this video for a raccoon I picked up and have a few questions if you still look at these comments. I fleshed it so that the skin was white, but after salting it the hide is starting to change to brown and purple. Is this normal? And how long do you recommend keeping the racoon hide in the brine solution? After feeling the hair I'm thinking a hat would be great for winter.
JustJudgmentdragon rawhide is super easy! just scrape the hair side and the inside clean and let it dry. no chemicals so its safe for dogs to eat. also you can make it into very strong cord or rope. ill do a video of you want lemme know
Final Snipe scrape it as much as possible, use wood ashes or the water extract of wood ashes, or smashed up brains, and then smoke it. Stretch it while it dries.
well stuff you i live on a farm and foxes are the worst. they kill tons of lams as well as miss mothering them from the sheep so they die alone in the cold. It was a tradegy when the fur industry shut down becuase we where really starting to get controll over the bastards population. I dont know what you think foxes are in the city but i can asure you they are not cute little doggys they are murderous stinking bastards. (like they really stink, BAD). Oh and btw the only reason im here is because i want to tann the first fox i shot, i blew a hole in his chest with a 250.

I’m glad you notices the toenails too lol 😂
Wow this video is exactly the guidance I needed, and I so appreciate your chipper attitude and glorious hat. Thank you kindly.

You are a wonderful teacher
Great video 👍 Very cool hat as well. Loved the energy you brought to the video as well

@@justaminuteie6586 very cool! Let me know how it goes!!

I defleshed, salted, rinsed in brine, washed in Palmolive, dried fur with blow dryer. Skin still greasy.. any thoughts? Red fox.. thanks

Great vid, thanks heaps for putting it up. It’s been a great tool whilst in lockdown down under
Good luck down there.

just got a road score red fox. thanx for sharing yr knowledge! i paint my toes the same color
Thanks for the video man! And nice toe nails! 🤘
Thanks, this helped me a lot.
Hey- thanks for illustrating everything so very clearly! Now I think I'll have a better go at it.
P.S. Is this tanning solution also called Tanisol?
I use the same solution this guy did. I tried to look up the ingredients before but the company blatantly says it's their own secret recipe.
@@justaminuteie6586 I use boiled acorns which contain tannin and soak it for 7 days which gives you that t an too.
You can also use its brains for a cream which also fans it (search it up)
Did you put the hyde in the freezer while you were waiting to get time To tan it or How did youKeep it
I have skinned and stretched them before to sell the pelt, but have never tanned them.
Is it true that instead of the solution you can use egg yolk?
This helped so much thank you
What if we didn't split it down the middle?
A fox bit the head off of one of my chickens. now it will be fed to the rest of my chickens and my daughter will have a warm hat for winter.
hahahahaha good on you i respect the revenge
Love your vids
Good video like the hat
I totally didn’t get my first try right so can I re-soak the hide and try again?? I defleshed it but I definitely did not apply the tanning solution correctly
You great job excellent

What else can I use if I don't have stuff you have in red bottle
@Carlos Afonso you can boil acorns and you that dark liquid which is tannin from the acorns soak for about seven days
You can also use its brains as a tanning cream (search it up)
excelent
Green toe nails and a fox hat. Certainly makes a statement; I'm just not sure what..
How do you get it to slowly dry out after the solution gets put on and you stretch it. Does the tanning stuff do that on its own?
Lots of stretching in all directions as it dries
Wait.... do you hang it to dry after stretching?? He just stopped! Lol
4:22 are your toenails painted green!? LOL
how would you cure it as rawhide
JustJudgmentdragon rawhide is super easy! just scrape the hair side and the inside clean and let it dry. no chemicals so its safe for dogs to eat. also you can make it into very strong cord or rope. ill do a video of you want lemme know
Crips brought me here
Instructions say fold skin to skin and then roll it up.
So if I'm in a survival situation and need to use hide for clothing and don't have any salt available what can I use? Lol
Final Snipe scrape it as much as possible, use wood ashes or the water extract of wood ashes, or smashed up brains, and then smoke it. Stretch it while it dries.
Final Snipe
urine and wood ash,use brains to soften it's mostly lanilan
Just scrape the hide and dry it, rawhide
You could use eggs too if you’re lucky & find them
Can we do it without that formula???! 🎴❤️
you can boil acorns and you that dark liquid which is tannin from the acorns soak for about seven days
Or its brains as a tanning cream
Can I wash it after tanning?
Greg Stamatopoulos if you get it soaked it will need restretching as it dries. The hair will repel rain. There's really no need to wash it, imo.
good to know. Im spiritually very close with foxes so I like to use their bones and fur but I REFUSE to hunt them or support the fur industry... ^^;
well stuff you
