      @@bonewizard Nah, I'm sure the way it was meant to work by WotC is meet a monster with immunity to weapon attacks and then the mages do all the work, or you just TPK. With how heavily weighted in the CR and max HP calculation those immunities and resistances are for a stat block, that's the only logical conclusion. ...For instance, Werewolves have around half the HP of other CR 3 monsters that have only 11 or 12 AC.

      @@bonewizard absolutely, that's not what I meant. It's just, when you choose a class and subclass, you make a decision of what character with what abilities you want to play. I have always thought that monk should be the reaction class, letting them parry attacks is an amazing idea that works so well with the fantasy of the agile, close quarters class and bulking them up to be able to actually fight in the frontline is so nice. A monk player might like these changes as much as a fighter would like the DM to say they get action surge, second wind, and indomitable every turn but that doesn't make it good balance. It doesn't make the monk feel viable so much as it has the side effect of invalidating all other martial classes. Hits about as hard as the fighter, tankier than the barbarian, exceeds the rogue in every metric aside being a skill monkey. Each individual change sounds like it'd be cool if monks could do those things but there's not consideration of the overall balance of the result against the other options.

      My own inpression of the monk has always been that it's like a warrior that also works like a Quarter Caster.
      Also maybe let them have the option of stacking one stat on another, like how a really old martial artist can still be extremely strong, despite their aging body. And I don't mean it in a Timless Body way, I mean it in a Kaku Kaioh from the Baki series kind of way.
      You're this super tough guy that can also shoot the occasional beam for long range attacks, either with KI or just punching so hard you send out a shockwave at your enemy.

    I love that this follows the Buff/Nerf philosophy I've seen praised in fighting games. It does not only make something weaker or stronger, but it wears down what is a potentially overused trait, as it's Stunning Strike, while giving better use to something that could be seen as Unoptimal, like Deflecting. It makes it more compeling to bring variety to the table instead of just changing the meta.

      @KaitlynBurnellMath 11 місяців тому +3

      Honestly, the unarmed fighting style is overhyped.
      It doesn't give you a bonus action punch, so unarmed monks do tend to substantially outdamage unarmed fighters. (At least up until level 11 when the fighter gets a third attack and the monk...doesn't).
      Also, unarmed fighter gets none of the monk features such as stunning strike, increased movement, or magical punches to bypass non-magical bludgeoning resistance. An unarmed fighter mostly just deals damage (and it's less damage than a Monk).
      The one thing they are a little better at is taking a hit. That's not really enough to make up for everything else they're missing.
      Monks are undertuned, of course, but unarmed fighters somehow manage to be even more undertuned than monks.

So if you use Stunning Strike on a creature, you cannot use it on that creature again for the rest of the turn no matter if they fail or succeed the save. As someone who has played a Battle Master Fighter to level 23 (or 24 after killing the final big bad) having too many attacks all the time can be a huge slog that slows down gameplay. Your turn becomes all about adding up a bunch of numbers over making the attacks feel impactful. The idea of making off turn attacks more reliably common was a nice compromise in this homebrew's design. At the very least, making a greater number of attack with things like Flurry of Blows should be subclass specific (especially if the Bonus Action can be used whenever you want like in this version). ...I say that having done my own, different, take on fixing Monk, so I'm mostly speaking in the context of this version.

And if you spend 1 point, you can dash and disengage too. Dodging is really strong so I can't think of a way to make it weaker but free.
      I say give them fighting styles too, or at least let them be options for a 1st level feat like they were going to be before they nixed class groups (right before the Monk could have seen any benefit, how convenient).

    Some additional tweaks I am making:
    - like others have mentioned, I am replacing stun with the dazed condition, and you can only attempt to stun (daze) any given creature once per turn.
    - if you score a critical hit, you can attempt to daze that creature, no ki required.
    - Changed patient defense to a reaction
    - Throwing missiles back at a creature does not require ki
    - give monks two reactions at 11th level (when fighters get three attacks). The additional reaction must be used for a monk feature or attack of opportunity (to avoid multiclass shenanigans) This has not yet been playtested, but I think it suits the fantasy of the monk doing a bajillion things in a round.

    The amount of google docs I have of me trying to buff/change monk before ultimately giving up because of ADHD is sad. It's also so nice to see an explanation of what irks me about monk being perfectly described. I have talked to DM's and others I play alongside with and they never understand and just say something along the lines of "I think Monk is fine, maybe it's just not the class for you." Which kind of made me feel like my opinion was invalid and I gave up until I saw your video pop up in my feed. I played the UA Dragon Monk and felt super weak alongside the Celestial Cleric, Moon Druid that could turn into monstrosities, and the Wild Magic Sorcerer. It was crazy to me that they nerfed the subclass before it went live..
    Anyways, thank you for what you do here with this. I appreciate you for making me not feel like my opinion is worthless or invalid.
    Edit: I also completely forgot to mention my distain for Stunning Strike. I didn't know how to describe it but it always felt super cheesy to me..

    I really liked the path you took for improving the monk. It does feel way better than what we have currently. When I tried to tweak the monk, I wanted to add the level 3 ability from the open hand subclass to base class, cause I thought that it would be cool to give the monk more effects to its attacks and make it more unpredictable. As well as at a higher level, flurry of blows get upgraded to making two additional attacks on top of the default bonus action attack, but that seem too much.
    Overall this looks like the best Monk overhaul I’ve seen yet. I am going to try to convince my DMs to let me use this version instead. Thanks for the buff and the great video.

    I love the feature BG3 gave open hand monks at 6, restore ki points, hit points, and get 2 bonus actions for 1 minute. That could easily be ported over as an incredible 7th, 10th, or 13th level feature. It’s a really great feature, and having it deep into the Monk’s level progression means it can’t be used as a broken level dip for other classes.
    I also had the idea of having something akin to “called shots” as a replacement to stunning strike. Allow the monk to block the flow of ki in a creatures body (like Ty Lee in Avatar:TLA), disabling limbs to have various effects like reduced movement, limited attacks, etc.

    I think your capstone ability is fine, however i did remember seeing a different homebrew Monk capstone somewhere else on UA-cam (I forget where). It allowed you to change your Creature type to any of your choosing, along with the mediocre official capstone. So your Long Death monk could become an Undead or your Kensai Monk could become a Fae. I think that this addition is INSANELY flavourful. It's also not even the wild considering that we now have official, non humanoid races.

      @bonewizard  Рік тому +4

      thanks im glad you like the video! Im not sure how changing your creature type would help or harm you but thats interesting. I think, at its core monk is celebration of the human spirit. It is the power fantasy of hard work paying off. You are not super naturally gifted, you had to build your power from nothing through hard work. Monk is the most human class there is because with enough work, you can kill gods and demons with nothing but your bare hands.

    • @TheThreehigh
      @TheThreehigh Рік тому

      @@bonewizard That is a solid point. I for one always play human unless it's for a specific build. However not every character is a human, some are Dhampir or Dragborn... Although at this point, you might as well homebrew in the creature type yourself lol.
      The indomitable human spirit is one of my favorite concepts. You don't really see many other parts of DnD where you gain abilities based on your sheer mastery over your own form and humanity. There should honestly be more, entirely mundane classes/subclasses with a wide variety of skill and abilities that can scale up to casters.
      That is why Fighter and Monk are my favorite classes. I find beauty in sheer mental and physical prowess overcoming the toughest threats the world has to offer. (Yes I am a Human Fighter player, sue me).
      You are one of my favorite dungeons and dragons content creators. Your homebrew is simple yet effective. Have you ever given thought to designing your own subclass? For Astral Monk (my personal favorite subclass)
      Make it less reliant on Ki or at least increase the timer that you have your ability up cause imo this subclass despite it being my favorite just burns through Ki like no other subclass but that’s really it, other then that i feel like the subclass is amazing

    Thanks for this buff to the monk. I'm going to pitch this to my DM since I'm playing a monk in a campaign that's like a homebrew Black Suns, which we just did the first session of.
    Edit: Additionally, I'd like to see the subclasses be reworked or even some more homebrew ones.

    I have been working on a monk revamp for months now and this was some hearty inspiration! My big addition was a whole spreadsheet of ki abilities they can take instead of some normal ones, including making stunning strike optional

  • @gideonpedari9881
    @gideonpedari9881 11 місяців тому +8

    I think something that would help monk tremendously is just switching unarmored defense and ki over to Constitution. That way, you don’t need 3 high stats to make a good monk, you just need 2. One thing I try to keep in mind with changes to classes or abilities is just “keep it simple stupid”. I’ve been trying to come up with a rewrite for the monk class myself, this videos has helped a lot, thank you

      I see your point, and I think its dumb. The point of using Wisdom for monk's saves and AC is that it's meant to represent discipline. You're a monk who uses their mastery over their mind and body to revoke other people's body privileges, not a barbarian who simply doesn't care if they get hurt.

    I am playing with my friends and one of them is playing a monk
    We buff the class with 3 things:
    1d10 for hp
    The damage of martial arts start 1d6 and goes to 1d12
    And the ki is the level+prof. Bonus
    And is going pretty good

    Best monk revamp I've seen so far! Most other revamps tend to stick to the ''dont change too much because scared of imbalancing'' scenario and honestly monk could use it. The changes you offer are mostly in line with what other classes can do so I don't really see them breaking anything. Considering a ton of campaigns dont even reach lvl 14+, the high end changes can be easily balanced by the dm changing encounters if necessary. Great stuff 10/10 want to try this version asap, finally an incentive to take it to lvl 20

    Literally the best rework I’ve seen, although I think the monk relies too little on their wisdom now, subclass abilities often still rely on it enough.
    I’m going to use this on my new party to shield them from the horrors of old 5e monk

    This is in response to your latest Monk Short. Let's go! I've actually been wondering for awhile now if you saw what they did to the monk class, and now I have my answer. Still pushed for a 2 ro 3 bump to AC, and an extra ASI at level 10 or 11 to help with the MAD condition of the class in my survey response. However, the monk is in a significantly better place, and you (and possibly others ;)) have aided. Take care all.

    referred here after comments on dndbeyond re: the new monk noticed similarities. One time through the video wasn't enough, but it's literally the first time I've ever seen a monk redesign that made me unabashedly excited about it. Most other designs are either bonkers or fall way, way short. I think the official new design falls short too, but is probably reasonably balanced. This was really sweet. Thank you!

    I've been burning through your vids. I really like this rework. Personally, I never had a problem with monk, but any time I've tried it, it's been low level one shots. I can definitely see that I stopped before more most of the glaring imbalances started to happen.
    I also really like how you pull up comparable abilities when introducing new ones for these buffs.

    a homebrew idea that i wanted to apply to my Owlin monk was to allow it to infuse her feathers with Ki and be able to throw them like daggers, and it also made me think of other racial specific abilities you can give monks, such as giving dragonbornes the ability to spend a ki point to completely shrug off an attack or something unique like that, leaning more into the fully honed body thing

    • @bonewizard
      @bonewizard  8 місяців тому

      That's a fun idea. Feather daggers. You could have a tortle spin on its back and do some kind of breakdance spin move. Like an AoE of fists and feet.

    Unironically, before watching this video I was making a monk subclass, and theres a few features that you added that I sort of made as a 6th and 11th level feature around the both saving throws and increasing the ki by gaining them back after getting hit using patent defense. I'd love to show it to you sometime especially because I'm still making it atm.
