    I recently visited Sweden and my favorite words were fika and lagom... fika is amazing and lagom just the nicest thing around the globe. There’s another one Swedes thought me about but I don’t remember exactly how it is, I just remember a bunny with a clock that tells just sleep time and eating time ... was super cute.

    I can see the similarities between most of the Swedish words and their English counterparts. Interestingly I can see even greater similarities with Scots:
    "bra" - "good". The pronunciation sounds very similar to the Scots word "braw", meaning "fine", "good" or "pleasing".
    "barn" - "child". Similar to the Scots word for child - "bairn".

    "Klockren" is from "klockren ton", litterary "clean bell pitch". A clear Pitch from a bell when you strike it, like a church bell. Meaning perfect. (Jämför rena kläder, rasren hund)

  • @leolody
    @leolody 8 років тому +30

    The word "Klockren" originiates from the two words "Klocka" and "Ren". In this case, "klocka" means "bell" and "ren" means "clear". So: "klockren" means as clear as the sound of a bell (pretty much). Makes a little more sense, I guess.

      Vindöga is a Swedish sailor term. It means when the boat is sailing right against the wind and there is no wind in the sails. That word probably came across to other countries during the Viking's time 🤔 sue me if I'm historically wrong now 😂
      But Wind-eye has nothing to do with Window

    Semester origins from Latin and means something like ”six months”. The word just evolved differently in English and Swedish over time. You can read more about this in Wikipedia and probably in other places as well. And in some books, of course…

    We have the same thing with grandparents in Turkish where your grandmother is either "anneanne", which means mum's mum and "babaanne" which means dad's mum. The word for granddad is the same on both sides however, but the words for auntie and uncle are different on both sides.
    Another weird thing is that aunt and uncle is different if they are married to your aunt or uncle, and the words for brother-in-law and sister-in-law are different depending on if they're married to your sibling or if you are their partner's sibling. Turkish is weird.

      Yep, there has been a lot of historical contact between Scotland (and the North-east coast of England) and Scandinavia. In the past, most people in the Shetland and Orkney islands spoke the Norn language, derived from Old Norse (via the Norwegian branch). It was actively spoken until the early 1800s. The Orkney and Shetland dialects still retain a Norwegian sounding 'melody'/'lilt' and vowel sounds.

    I think a lot of Swedes speak English with a British accent because they have seen so many British tv programs and listened to so many British singers.

      @@SannaHaydon I will have to admit that I haven't been to Sweden since 1975. I was visiting a friend and his wife who lived near Stockholm. One of their friends took me for a ride in his big American muscle car and the radio was blasting out American rock and roll. It was kind of surreal. I still have an interest in Sweden and enjoy reading mysteries written by Swedish authors and watching mystery series like Wallander and movies like the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I even found my old Swedish phrasebook. I hope to return to Sweden one day.

    Kiss means Urin, not pee. Sorry to say but there is a bit of learning to catch up on here. You can "fika" on your own. And "lilla gubben", "lilla gumman" are used (when correctly) when you are pointing out that someone is "Lill gammal", acting a bit older than their age. There are also Swedish words that have lost their correct meaning over time, like "Rolig", Denmark and Norway have this word correct but not Sweden, "Ro-Ligt" is self explaining that it has to do with "Ro" and that means calm. Lagom is a viking word, it makes more sens if you break it up, Lag-Om (take so there will be enough for all).

    So funny video! I'm french, and canadian (from my mum). Loved it. It reminded me of some time I spent with swedish people I worked with in Edinburgh, at the Elephant House. Nostalgia. They tried to teache me some words (like juied, no the one for spoon: sked, phew found it) and trick me too. That was funny.

    Oh, you know the "It's not the fart that kills you, it's the smell" is the masterpiece of Norwegian car race competitor Petter Solberg. He is known throughout Norway for his absolutelu awful English. He unintentionally says the funniest things. Other examples are: "I have pigs(pigger) in my dekk", "There was a moose(mus) in the engine" and "I don't know what you call it in English, but in Norwegian we call it aircondition" 😂

    English is missing a word for "positive negation". I can say "so, you are not going to the party?" If you only answer "yes" or "no" I will be confused. In swedish you can say "jo" which means "yes, but the opposite to what you just said". In german they have the word "doch" which has the same meaning.
