- As the International Space Station (ISS) nears the end of its operational life, scheduled for decommissioning in 2030, the entire space community is turning its attention to what comes next. The ISS, a symbol of international collaboration in space for over two decades, has been pivotal in advancing our understanding of space and human physiology in microgravity. With its retirement on the horizon, the race to develop its successor is intensifying, with SpaceX at the forefront proposing a revolutionary concept: transforming their Starship spacecraft into a new space station.
SpaceX's approach diverges from traditional models where space stations are built from scratch. Instead, they envision leveraging the existing capabilities of the Starship spacecraft. This concept isn't without historical precedent; there have been ideas about repurposing components like external fuel tanks into habitats. However, SpaceX's proposal is unique due to Starship's design and capabilities.
Designed initially for interplanetary travel, Starship boasts a robust construction made from stainless steel, which is exceptionally durable, resistant to space's harsh conditions, and easy to maintain. This material choice not only makes Starship efficient for travel but also ideal for transformation into a long-term space habitat.
Starship's size is one of its most compelling features for conversion into a space station. With dimensions of 50 meters in height and a diameter of 9 meters, it already exceeds the internal volume of the ISS. The upcoming Starship V3 model, expected to be even larger at 70 meters, would further enhance this potential. Originally designed to carry up to 100 passengers for interplanetary missions, the spacecraft offers ample space for living quarters, scientific research facilities, and storage.
Another significant advantage is its reusability. If adapted as a space station, Starship could return to Earth for maintenance, potentially lowering the operational costs significantly compared to the ISS's maintenance, which costs NASA about $3 billion annually.
Economically, the transformation of Starship into a space station could be a game-changer. While the ISS has cost an estimated $150 billion over its lifetime, Elon Musk has suggested that each Starship could be produced for as little as $20 million. Even with multiple Starships forming a station, the total cost could be a fraction of what was spent on the ISS. This cost-effectiveness could open up space to commercial tourism, research, and even private ventures by making space more accessible.

😃LIKE this video NOW, if you love SpaceX!
Hello SpaceX it has been 5 months since I was there in Hawthorne Facility. I have to say the Starship as a the new a new Space Station. Since SpaceX will be contracted to take down the Current I.S.S. to Earth by 2030. How about using it's MASS to assist along with a different Starship as a DART Project to Divert the Apophis Asteroid as a Double dart to see how much it can change it's direction. The Hit to Apophis has be before it enters Earths Atmosphere. Assuming it does enter our atmosphere the I.S.S. will mostly burnout After Impact, and Sensors and Cameras would be cool too. 👩🏻🚀👍🏻🚀🚀🛰🛰🕍🕍🪐🪐🌌🌌🛸🛸🌲🌲⛰⛰🧗🏻 Let me know if you need a Pilot to the Starship Dart I have control to though
Well done SpaceX. No one has done more to advance space exploration.
Agree!
Let's do it! 👍👍
What we need.Is SpaceX taking over NASA's function and we would save a lot of money and be able to achieve much more and at a faster pace
NASA should be replaced with SpaceX!
Starship is suitable as a space station. A payload hatch covering a docking ring adapter and the two refuelling ports seems easily done. Add some solar panels for station power, and you have a station. One that can remain in orbit, dock to other ships or modules, and conceivably return to Earth…or transit to the moon, or Mars.
Don't deorbit ISS. Push it into a higher orbit and let future space industries cannibalize it for parts. It would be such a waste to burn it in the atmosphere.
Do you want to be in space any 30 year old space station. With millions of parts and seals having metal fatigue and wearing of gaskets? Really?
It's a junk pile now, 30 years on. Let it burn up.
Not the hole thing just good solar panels, docking ring's ect😊
I agree
Moon orbit. Or halfway point. But hacked out for a purpose. Life bouy?
Automatd functions?.
Turn it into a probe and send it out?
Being that a space station conversation is lighter than a full payload, the Star Ship can be lengthened. In space modification is not necessary.
I bet those stranded up there would like this, today.
Yes, the list of new space data from the ISS is very revealing...
❤ ok use the solar panels ( which are nearly new) and put docking rings on a starship. So you can build up a starship space station quicker then the less mass to push into deorbit. After all isn't that the aim reuse not waste, you reduce the waight it coast alot lot less to deobit whats left...😊
It just means that Boeing ULA and Blue Origin will sue NASA. (That is what they are best at)
I just thought of your new episode, and here it is! Thank you so much it was a great episode
Thanks! Glad it was helpful!
There already has been a repurposing of a rocket i don't know if anyone has mentioned Skylab which was created using the 3rd stage of the Saturn V rocket
SpaceX Starships are multiple missions yummy goodies!
Haha!
Rather than getting power from vast solar arrays, I would put a compact nuclear reactor that could be refurbished if needed by detaching and being taken back to the surface. With the starship more is possible.
Why not use carbon for heat tiles?
❤bravo SpaceX 👍🇺🇲🚀👏👏👏
Space X needs to start leaving their used rockets in orbit to use the parts to build other items.
you need a gravity station !!!
Never let the government do anything…..private enterprise will ALWAYS be cheaper!
Agree!
Skylab v2.0. The right way to do it.
Use it for Storage
I hope that they choose to go with my idea for the American Space station. A.S.S.
NASA just needs to cancel the SLS and use the money for other projects!
Exactly
A SpaceX Starship, spoke-wheel spaceport/modular/space station is the way to go for a docking hub-space station, and it is the most viable space station of the station ideas, yet, devised. I thought of this as the ideal ISS replacement, since Starship was first brought to mind as a reusable space vehicle. Starships can dock, be repaired, or replayed without every landing on Earth removing completely the need for boosters. Materials for building ships can be refined and manufactured on the moon or other planets, and if visitors want to visit Earth they can be shuttled to and fro by smaller glider reentry vehicles currently being manufactured. Musk is moving humans to become a multi-world species, and this is the route for us to follow. Some will stay in the old world and others will be explorers and settlers of new worlds. Humans are a restless species, and we will need "waystations" along the way.
Starship has to reach orbit first.
Extra is X , must be most than yet .
This is common news.
correction blue orgin is not in the race.............. so very very very far behind nasa and space x
Most people know that the only way to go to space as a tourist is to be a celebrity or super rich. So sad isn't it ?
SpaceX may make this much more affordable in the coming years, especially with Starship!
👍
Very well done, but where's the information about Musk breaking through with the Alcubierre Drive? 🤣Dammit, yes! that's satirical, UA-cam, I'm not belittling sites claiming it's real....lol Please don't censor me!
nobody cares it seems
Don't think a rotating station is worth doing
Skylab MK2
2040 for sample return, what a joke by 2040 over a thousand colonists will be living on Mars.
What hard to understand if China can return moon rocks & soil samples why can't the same be done returning Mars samples ?
The major differance is how long it takes for commands to reach the space crafts involved because of the distance.
140 million miles (225 million km) to Mars vs 238,855 miles (384,400 km) to the Moon. only laser
Make artificial gravity revolving space stations. Perpetual zero gee is stupid and cruel.
The thousands that "are" SpaceX, yes
Not BOZO!
For some reason, i recently have lost much of my trust for elon musk. I don't doubt his approach to design and implementation of a usable and reusable rockets. I have seen plenty of examples of short sighted money savings. Also myopic vision on many aspects of the build.
it's called aging...
I saw a great bumper sticker on a Tesla yesterday: “I bought this before we knew he was nuts!”
Also starship will not be a space station elons already been over this
😂😂😂😂 ✌️🇨🇳✌️🇨🇳✌️🇨🇳
