    Another great video! Thank you! He went through so much. I didn't realize his reign was as long as it was. I'm glad he decided to leave when he did. The restoration of the Bourbons and Napoleon III tried to do the same thing. Restore what was before the revolution and Waterloo. It can't be done.

    I'm so happy to finally see this King on the channel. There has always been something intriguing to me about the Kings that reigned between Napoleon I and Napoleon III. They didn't have the same type of power as the earlier Ancien Regime Kings, but each one had such a peculiarly different personality. I especially find the relationship between King Louis Philippe and Tsar Nicholas I very interesting. Apparently they were very good friends during the Napoleonic Wars, but the autocratic Tsar grew to despise the so called "Citizen King" and thought very little of him during his time as the King of the French, considering him weak and incapable of governing the people of France properly. The Tsar certainly ruled his people with an iron fist as did the Austrian Emperor and the King of Prussia, more or less as a way to prevent any possible future revolutions. It worked for Russia as there were no rebellions during the period of 1848-1849, but the Prussians and Austrians both had to crush uprisings. Even calling upon the Tsar for assistance when things looked particularly bad. Perhaps had Louis Philippe remained friends with Tsar Nicholas I he, like the others, could have called upon his old friend for assistance to send weapons and troops and crush the French Revolution of 1848. If that had happened Napoleon III would never have gained power and as we all know he wasn't a very good leader for France and cost many lives with his Crimean war, colonization of Vietnam, Intervention in Mexico and war with Prussia. When it was all over Napoleon III was strongly frowned upon and considered a very reckless leader in contrast to his uncle who is glorified to this day.

      Actually, the relationship between king Louis-Philippe, and czar/emperor Nicholas I turned sour/"south" due to the outcome of the 1830 revolution, as czar/emperor Nicholas I accused king Louis-Philippe of "betraying" king Charles X (cousin of Louis-Philippe, and "legitimate" king of France), and the "God-given" cause of the nobility, by embracing liberalism, and the bourgeoisie.

    I have always found Louis-Philippe to be a rather interesting fellow, the fact that he didn't try to bring back the absolute monarchy after Charles X's efforts and the fact that he brought up the bourgeoisie in such a manner would, had he been king a decade or two earlier, I feel really would have had a much larger negative impact on his reign. I wonder what Louis XIV would have thought of the situation, as he was almost the embodiment of the height of absolutism.

    I find Louis Philippe to be exceedingly unlucky as pre-Revolution he probably would have been seen as fairly moderate, but post-Revolution he didn't stand a chance during 1848 especially. It was a surprise not that he was deposed, but that the other great houses of Europe weren't toppled too.

    • @TheKingsofFrance
      @TheKingsofFrance  2 роки тому +3

      Good point actually. I must agree and it is (as far as I know) this fact why Victoria, although she did extend him with a lot of kindness, did worry about her association with him, as she feared it would damage the strength of the English Monarchy.

      Russia was considered the Gendarme of Europe and was the strongest European power from 1815-1855 and was more than willing to assist Monarchs with putting down rebellions ASAP as seen with the Hungarian's revolutions against Austria. The autocratic Tsar Nicholas I would have nothing of it. The Holy Alliance of Russia, Prussia, and Austria definitely had a monopoly on continental Europe during that particular period with Prussia annexation of the rest of Germany by 1866 and becoming the strongest continental power by far until 1918. The British could have challenged them and would have won on the sea but definitely lost on the land.

      Victoria was also very friendly to Napoleon III during his reign and also allowed him to exile in England after he lost the Franco-Prussian War. I do find that a bit odd as Napoleon III was certainly a dictator ( Lincoln and U.S. Grant particularly thought so) and with him being the nephew of the original Napoleon who despised England probably more than any other country I would figure him living there would be out of the question.
