It’s tough when drug cartels make so much money. Just consider yourself lucky you live in America (I’m assuming). Drug cartels have been estimated at making up to 25% of the entire Mexican GDP. That’s without having to worry about providing any of the services a government provides.

Almost all of the people who stood up against these cartels got killed. This shows how useless South American governments are. Of what use is it to send any military force against cartels only as long as the people trying to fight them are alive? It was almost as if they only came to make a show of action, but usually did nothing. When the person who actually fought got killed, action against the cartel's stopped. In other words, in most of these cases, the cartels won. The cartels lost members, but only in the case of the DEA agent did they ultimately lose leaders, or were in any serious way given trouble.

~ death became irrelevant when the cause was perceived to be much greater than themselves. Think of it as going to war against a malevolent force that murdered your daughter, wanted to steal your livelihood (farm), your home you lived in for decades and leave you with nothing like a beggar on street…
~they exposed weakness amongst the cartels …something not easy to do especially for one person. The last guy had a multiple hour gunfight with an entire team of killers, got 6 of them, and scared the rest off while protecting his home.
As far as long term change, the Mexican and US governments working together have not achieved that. These individuals probably caused more uproar in their microcosms than any big drug bust or arrest will ever
do for a larger scale. Mora created his own autodefensas group and many more (a lot them farmers) were formed in the wake of people fighting back and getting fed up of being bullied. Some go corrupt but many are still out there fighting for the good. People are realizing they can fight back. It’s not an automatic win, but it’s still positive change imo. Life isn’t a Hollywood movie where everything ends happily so the audience can go home satisfied.

Think of it as going to war against a malevolent force that killed your daughter, tried to take your livelihood (farm) or your home, leave you with nothing etc. The last guy was almost 80 years old and scared off an entire group of killers, taking out 6 all by himself while protecting his home in a multiple hour long gunfight. I am sure you can see honor in that as he made the big bad cartel look weak and penetrable. As far as change the emergence of autodefensas groups like Mora’s became more common which is for the most part positive (some do become corrupt). People are fighting back. Besides, as far as long term radical change goes, not even the US and Mexican gov working together have managed that so far. Drugs will keep going up to the US and American firearms will keeps going down to MX in-the very hands of the enemy they are fighting. The two countries are like a dysfunctional, codependent couple together and there is way too much money involved for this to stop.

The people in these regions had no choice but to choose between the old guard and a terrifying new invader. The Santana brothers didn't form Los Viagras after Moras death, they existed long before that as muscle for hire- they worked as killers for Los Zetas ffs- and they succeeded in infiltrating the rebellion for their own gain. Michoacan and Guerrero just can't be analysed from the US perspective of cops vs traffickers.
