The fact that you did this with your Dad made the video a success on its own, treasure those memories. Also, looks like the $ 1,100 dollar Subaru was money well spent. I was surprised. Thank you.
I was just amazed that a 20 year old Subaru had so little rust. Here in the northeast Subarus are everywhere due to their handling in the snow but the road salt eats them overtime (well it destroys all cars here overtime). Fun fact: NY uses more road salt per mile of road than any other state.
That is why it is wise to get treated with rust protection or treated over the life of the car. I have an 05 Subaru that I treated the rust on that was developing on the rear subframe before it got to bad.
I have a YJ 4.0 on 33s and a Tacoma TRD on 31s. Ive pushed both of them and broke a lot of things. I just got a 2023 Crosstrek Sport (my first Subaru) and Ive been messing with various terrain, snow, mud, round rock with soft soil and Im going to go ahead and admit that if approach angle and ground clearance werent an issue, the Subaru would out perform both. That and I have little no no fear of hitting rocks and trees in my Jeep. By the way I was really hoping you would take a 45 degree line at that last rock ledge and pop over it. Fun video, thanks. The Subaru AWD system is fascinating to play with
Knowing what I know now, 2 years later... I would totally push that Subaru up that ledge one way or another But also the Subaru is very dead and in car hell now. So shows how much I know 😅
I would take the Subaru over a jeep any day. I could take that entire engine apart with a 10,12,14,17,19mm and a 10mm allen if needed. The jeep on the other hand I just don't trust the engineering or dependability. 😐 Japanese engineering always beats our American engineering unfortunately.
6:20 I mean, yeah. Foresters do have the symetric AWD-train for a reason. Don't know if your "SF" did come with Low Gear. If so, it would work even better. Remember that the Fozzy weighs quite a bit less than the big 5 door Rubicon and wider tyres aren't always the #1 choice in mud. You'll never see a Lada Niva with BFGoodrich beasts on ;)
I would like to see them go somewhere the Jeep can actually show what its capabilities are. I fear that these comparisons just grow misconceptions in the heads of Subaru owners who think that other than more ground clearance the Jeep it's not better when that's just not true. You find a place where he needs to use low range disconnect his sway bars from the inside button and engage both lockers and watch him crawl up something and ridiculous articulating on the way and that's Subaru won't even make it up the first step without hitting the bumper and a bunch of wheel spin with traction control not aggressive enough and not low enough gearing. I hate when they take it on something exactly suited for the Subaru
Waiting for the next video! We had a blast with you and your dad! We even took the plunge and posted our first video! It’s not that great but it’s a start!
Now if you take it out to a desert Trail more Rocky and more clearance needed and where the lockers and the sway bar disconnects come in then that's where it really matters. Having all-wheel drive and traction control is totally fine on that little obstacle. You should compare the Subaru to a early 2000s Land Rover Discovery series 2 worth like $4,000 just saying that terrain doesn't really get what the Jeep can do
nothing really challenging until that last rock formation, my 2wd trailblazer could have handled most of it. subarus are amazing vehicles, with a 2 inch lift and some tires it would have followed that elephant right across the rocks... great vdo with your dad!

Yeah that's true but it really wouldn't matter if you took it somewhere that involved needing lockers and a low range transfer case and disconnecting sway bars like the jeep has. That jeep will crawl up things that the Subaru couldn't even do if it had the right approach angle and ground clearance LOL sometimes solid axles lockers and gearing are actually the only thing that will make it. It's like testing a Lamborghini somewhere it has to drive slow and then judging it
The oldest and crappiest Subaru will destroy any Jeep off road as long as tires and ground clearance is held even/accounted for. Subarus probably have the best AWD system you can get.
At least the SF and SG series do, if you get 'em with 5 speed manual + manual low gear. I wouldn't give my SG away with a muzzle pointed at me. But as it goes with all new stuff: They don't build 'em like they used to. Now it's all CVTs and electronic X-Mode shenanigans :(
The funny thing about this is? That Subaru will out 4 wheel that Jeep any day of the week, if done fairly. For example; The Jeep is lifted, the Subaru is not. So, no obstacles that require clearance would be fair. Second? The Jeep has oversized, very agressive offroad tires on it. The Suburu has slick, relatively treadless street tires on it. And youre comparing on slick mud despite the Jeep clearly having an advantage due to expensive tires... Even up the vehicles, put aggressive tires on the suburu etc... And I will GUARANTEE you it outperforms the Jeep as far as traction is concerned. Ive had many offroad trucks for 4 wheeling fun, and I drove numerous Subarus for many years living in northern Vermont, in blizzards and many winters in the snow. Unbelievably, the Subaru WILL put that new Jeep to shame!, Its so bad, it almost embarrassing when passing a stuck Meep thats all, decked out, when youre in a bone stock Subaru with-completely bald tires. Lol. Oh and BTW... The older generation Subaru wagons, (the older ones you needed to manually put into 4 wheel drive by a lever inside, were exceptionally better for traction than the “ ewer” models like you have). much older than the model you have here, were even at least twice as good as yours for off-roading and unbelievable traction.
The fact that you did this with your Dad made the video a success on its own, treasure those memories. Also, looks like the $ 1,100 dollar Subaru was money well spent. I was surprised. Thank you.

This Subaru started life up north, but moved to Florida pretty fast. Still not a great place to keep cars clean, but better than the rust belt.

Funny you should mention a 2 inch lift....
Does that year/trim forester have factory rear vlsd? Be really cool to see you put a 2" lift, bigger mt or at tires and do this again
