Ahhhhh ! I've been afraid to try this but I'm ordering a decent solder station(I need a better iron anyhow) and gonna give it a try . I'm trying to purchase "MORE HOURS IN THE DAY" ... Never have enough time ...LOVE YOUR VIDEOS ... Since I've become disabled I have taken up buying 20 dollar guitars and learning guitar maintenance on them . Trying a bit of everything . Nothing to lose ...I LOVE GUITARS and I LOVE TINKERING
Here are some ideas and tips I use, "use or ignore" your choice!
I like to insert a popsicle stick or something that can take the heat between the PCB and the components when soldering so the components have better air circulation to help keep the parts cooler than when they are right against the PCB, when possible. Maybe an 1/8th inch clearance, just not too much clearance. Also if the components "lets the smoke out" (goes bad, shorts, Ect) in the future, the PCB has less chance of getting burnt or damaged.
I also prefer a small chisel style soldering tip. I feel that it is easier to get and keep the tip closer to the joint you are soldering than with a pointed tip.
And if you are worried about heating the components too much, put a small metal clip or hemostat on the lead between the component and PCB as a heatsink when soldering.
Take your time, try to make your work look as neat and professional as you can. Plus double and/or triple check your work.
No matter your experience level, anyone can put a part in a place it doesn't belong. Better to check and correct than toast parts or create a troubleshooting nightmare!

If you want to finish the box yourself, here is a tip. Go to a second-hand store and get a used toaster oven. Then you can get a can of primer spray paint and the can of the color of your choice. A can of clear coat would be good too. Make sure you sand the enclosure well. Spray with primer BEFORE you install anything in your enclosure! :) Then pop it in the toaster oven on the highest setting for a couple of hours. Let it cool the scuff sand it. Spray with color of choice and pop it back in the toaster over again for a couple of hours. I put three coats of color on the enclosures and repeating the baking process. Then decorate at your pleasure. Put clear coat on it and you are good to go. Make sure you do not use your toaster oven for food afterwards. THIS IS IMPORTANT! Make sure you don't use the toaster oven for food after you have used it for baking the paint on your enclosure!
Great classroom for pedals. StewMac is the best for instructions and quality. I’ve built the Expander and the Screamer. Both work great and are in my arsenal. BTW I have a true Klon Centaur and both really add to the tonal possibilities along with the Klon. Fun to make and more fun to use. I’m waiting for more variety to choose from. Thanks.

Great information. Love the live video style, but please use a tripod for the close-up shots next time. There really is no need to shoot with a shoulder rig when you’re staying in a stationary spot and it made the close-ups very “bouncy.” A tripod would allow the camera op to have more control of the camera also as they are not trying to keep things in frame with one hand, and mess with the controls with the other hand. I say this to try and be helpful, not be bashful. I love Stewmac and all the content y’all provide.

@@stewmac I have a question regarding your steps on "How to install a Strat tremolo and get it right" I get the jist of it, but the guitar in your example is a swimming pool routed cavity, How do you perform the same alignment and install on a 3 single coil routed body since you really have no straight edges to work with? I've been googling all week and still can't find a single video or tutorial on how. It's like a bigfoot mystery or something. Thanks in advance. I'd like to get this done asap seeing as its really the only thing holding up my build.
Might be a good idea to inspect the component side of the solder joint as well, make sure you solder all the way thru the eyelet.
Just started watching this series:) really interesting! Would be also nice to hear the fuzz through the direct in. I supposed you recorder with the camera mic and it doesn’t sound very clear..

Building kits reminds me of baking a cake. You just need to have quality ingredients, decent equipment, and follow the recipe, start off simple, and work your way up towards more complex kits once you get the experience!
bread boarding would be smart to start off with first also, but for just plug and play and not knowing why it works this is cool.
Love this tutorial! About to finish up putting together the Screamer pedal, super pleased. Instructions are really clear and detailed. Of course I still somehow managed to install the breakout board upside lol...gotta make mistakes to learn tho 😹...but yeah super fun build! this tutorial series has definitely been v helpful as well 🤘thanks y'all!

Best of luck to you. I am afraid. I took apart a pedal to do a simple internal switch, I fried it.
Could you try turning the pedal on & off while playing when you demo the pedal, as oppose to play a bit switch it and play again.

I received the Ghost Drive in the white housing as a gift. Can I still spray pain it? I was thinking 2 or 3 colors like graffiti. Would that work on the white housing?

Great advice, I've been soldering for over (cough) 40 years, since I was about 10. No need to be scared of it, take it slow and careful.
Might have been good to make a guitar player handy for demo purposes.

Put my Ghost together recently and it works but is nothing special IMO. My cheap MOJOMOJO is more reliable and easier to dial in. The Ghost is in the junk box now. I may have screwed up building i; and, for me it's not worth the trouble to find out if it can be fixed. $120 lesson that I am not great at building pedals and to just rely on tried and true guaranteed professional pedals.

That's like buying a Martin D28 kit for $3900. Aren't kits suppose to be far less than buying it pre-made?!? Wow, stew-Mac is off the freakin rails.
Great idea to share a how to, but there’s much fluff. It’s hard to wait for these guys to actually get to the subject, which is to build a pedal. They, for example, spend a really long time on drawing on the pedal which really isn’t something even a 5 ur old would need. I’m trying not to explain, but they really don’t get to any subject at hand. Makes not want to watch Stew videos, which would be a terrible shame. Take this as helpful notes when making new videos. It not hate.
Good grief. I've taught 12 year old's to design, build, and tweak effects in less time than this video. Even less time to trouble shoot and repair tube amps. All these circuits were perfected more than 45 years ago.
Perhaps you can do a video series showing this?
