Cartoonist Kayfake wasn't about promoting anyone or anything but themselves and their own work. IF they covered you it was because you were "content", and content is the little thing that they did in between all the ads and endless self-promotion.
The majority of new comics are trash. Everything about them from the horrid art, colors, and writing to the ridiculous prices. There is nothing appealing about anything that comes out on 'new comic book day' other than some of the facsimile editions that Marvel loves to pump out.

There are certainly some money grabs in the industry, and we do miss some of the older years in comics, but certain creators are still knocking out amazing work. Mark Waid is doing amazing work with Worlds Finest, Phillip Kennedy Johnson is doing great work on the current HULK run, the new Ultimates line for Marvel is awesome, and the new Absolute Line from DC is friggen crazy! But that's the great thing about comics, we can always go back and read the old stuff we love, and we can give some new things a try and if it's not for us, hopefully someone else will pick it up.
