Rabbi YY Jacobson delivered another amazing lecture in Mayan Yisroel of Brooklyn. The lecture was on The Rambam (1135-1204)-The life, times & works of a man who transformed the landscape of Judaism. The lecture was recorded on 12-18-13.

The Rambam was influnced by Averroes who had a greater impact on Christian Europe: he has been described as the "founding father of secular thought in Western Europe" and was known by the sobriquet the Commentator for his detailed emendations to Aristotle. Latin translations of Averroes's work led the way to the popularization of Aristotle.

The two individuals are as different as day is to night. A when frying in a skillet, water and oil retain their individual chemical essences. Both water and oil are great.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Founded in the 3rd century CE by Plotinus, The Neoplatonist tradition has clear echoes in the Zohar, as indeed in many forms of mystical spirituality, whether Jewish, Christian or Muslim (see Avicenna, Maimonides, and Aquinas). The concept of creation by successive emanations of God in particular is characteristic of neoplatonist thought. In both Kabbalistic and Neoplatonist systems, the Logos, or Divine Wisdom, is the primordial archetype of the universe, and mediates between the divine idea and the material world. For example, the neoplatonist Proclus describes the Logos in terms of the "One beyond being". This primordial unity then, though self-complete, overflows with potency and from this power creates the manifold world beneath it. This downward movement from unity to multiplicity he calls Procession. The reverse process of Reversion is then the lower lifeforms, such as humanity, ascending back toward God through spiritual contemplation. Jewish commentators on the Zohar expressly noted these Greek influences.

The division between the Muslims started the very day prophet Muhammad died not the time of Rambam. Where to buried Mohammed and who takes the leadership of the Muslims were the issue for this division.

The Shiite schism took place many centuries before the Almohads and the Rambam. The rise of the Almohads had nothing to do with Shiism, both they and their adversaries, the Almoravids, were Sunni Muslims.
The Almohads can perhaps be compared to the Salafis or Wahabbis of today in their monotheistic zeal.

Oh boy, so many historical inaccuracies. Avicenna was a Persian not an Arab.

ari mayteles I was going to listen but after reading this comment decided not to listen to the Rabbi. This inaccuracy is not acceptable. 90% of the so called Golden age of Islam thinkers were Persians who despite Islam still continued their intellectual pursuits until they could no more. Not being aware of the difference is astonishing
