Yorik, Hi! I'm an industrial and mechanical engineer from Punta del Este, Uruguay (married with an architect) with an active interest in CAD, architecture and automation. I'm following your FreeCAD tutorials and I checked your Openeing Design studio web page. Found it very, very interesting. Great Work!
Great performance of the Freecad team. Proposal for windows/doors/....: a part can be based on a host. If so, the Host constraints are visible to the part (during part design stub contraints can be used). And the parts can have a hole cutting the host. Then any part can be designed and promoted to a window / door / pipe-flange making a hole in wall/other part/... etc.
Basically this is 100% possible already. You are not forced to use the window tool to create doors/windows, it's only a convenience.. you can use part/partdesign workflows too and do very customized things. See wiki.freecadweb.org/Arch_Window#Defining_window_types
About dimensions: what are 3D dimensions for? How would you use it? In a practical sense, what is their idea? In the display projection? If there is a font on the sheet, then how is the font in 3D the same as on the sheet? What are the dimensions? How to change the size, for example, not from the window to the rotation, but from the window to the axis? And then about? Can I add or remove a size to the dimensional chain? Or divide it (it was the length of the house, but it became - from the corner to the axis - to the future axis - to the second corner)? Additional dimensions are added in the archiCAD: Or (also with the "control" pressed, select an extra serif and press "delete"
These tuorials are great Yorik. I've struggled to get started with Freecad until I found them. Specifically for windows I'd like to be able to do accurate thermal modelling which really needs an actual section of the frame (showing PVC+cavities or timber+aluminium), not just a materials list. Is it possible to define a more detailed window object for this sort of modelling? The glazing needs to be more than just 'glass'. At least knowing if it is 1,2,3,4 sheets. g-values, u-values, coatings. All these things are needed for thermal modelling. And reveal depths - I think I saw something that looked like it dealt with that.
How goes thermal modeling with freecad? I too would like to use freecad to do heat loss calculations for hvac system design. It looks so easy when Yorik does it. My window placements end up in space, my presets reset themselves.
3. hello. I have a problem inserting doors and windows in Freecad through the BIM Workbench. They are shown as a set of loose rectangles and not in their original form. I already uninstalled and reinstalled the FC but it did not solve. Have you experienced this and would you know the solution to show windows and doors correctly again? Thanks for understanding. Congratulations on the excellent videos.
Window placement is still something a bit complicated in FreeCAD. Usually you achieve correct placement by first placing a window approximately, then moving it to its correct, final position with the move tool. I still don't have a very clear idea of how this tool should work to offer an optimal workflow...
Thanks for the quick reply. I would have expected a parametric window placement. I partly have success with parametric sketches but partly have weird / kind of random behaviour @@YorikvanHavre
Working with sketches is something that works already. If you draw a sketch on top of the face of a wall, you can precisely constrain that sketch regarding to, for example, an edge of the wall. But this is not very easy to add to "preset" windows...
@@YorikvanHavre that is exactly what I encountered. Redefining the sketch you have to find the one constraint that places the window and delete it. In most cases it seems to be the last one. I have pretty much of hazzle with mapped sketches. They get unstable very fast =-(
How can it output the lengths of all the different aluminum profiles and glass sizes that are used in the frame. I can use the length information and do linear nesting and get my cutlist.
Informative video.I managed to download parts library. Learning to place windows and doors, I believe I inadvertently changed dimensions' values of windows and door (I realized after that the mouse middle roll button does change those values). Also, I have some windows inner and outer frame that are not aligned. Some windows have no opening, glass, ... Is there a way to reset all values to the original? thx. Also, A great video tutorial would be to create from scratch one custom window.
You can basically always tweak everything back into exactly what you need.. check the base sketch, then the window components. Everything explained on wiki.freecadweb.org/Arch_Window
Question: I've installed del parts_library and managed to see the extended window list, but when I try to insert a window from the parts_library it does not integrate the window part to the wall, I also tried to insert a window outside the wall, move it and use the add button, but is not working. Does this window thing works only with the preset windows from the top of the list?
Indeed the windows/doors fro the parts library are not all well formatted to work with the windows system. That's on our todo list, most of them need to be resaved. For the moment, yes, only the default ones at the top are guaranteed to work correctly.
I really appreciate your videos. I had used Sketchup before but need to change because I need better building drawings and I can't afford the Pro Version of SketchUp. I only have a simple Windows computer (Intel I3 core) and AMD Radeon Mobility Radeon 5000 video card with 2.8 Graphics memory but only 1MB dedicated video memory. I've been following and doing your tutorials with no trouble so far, but I have suddenly run into problems when I use the windows builder and place it in a wall. The viewport freezes although I can click on the tree and menu items, or change and work on another model that is open in FreeCad. Do you think this problem is due to the graphics card?
Hi Yorik! Great tutorial. I tried to make a simple door and I succeed. But then I tried to create a double door and it seems FreeCAD is strugling to recognize the wires from the sketch. Looks like the problem is FC it's not expecting to find more than one adyacent wires inside the frame.
The opening symbols are very simple, just arcs and a couple of lines, not the whole window. But all the custom windows are downloadable from github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD-library
That´s great. It should be possible for an architect to model all the objects at a facade in the perspective mode. So at the end you don´t need to use sketchUp (SU) and then remodel in Bim ! A 2. question : Do you have a push/pull function, same as in SU ? It would then replace SU and have parametric Objects ...... @@YorikvanHavre
It is the desktop theme used by my OS (linux in this case). FreeCAD uses it automatically. But you can also use one of the stylesheets in Edit -> Preferences -> General
I don't know why FreeCAD has a lot of bugs for me! for example, when I change the length of a line it doesn't change until I draw another line! or if I make a door and change its height later the hole in the wall doesn't change according to the new height!! I cannot work with these bugs. What's the problem?!
Thank you for your effort but I don't find the video very good. Windows and doors are placed in the wall of a house and all houses have at least 4 outside walls, what I want to know is how to place a window precisely on any given wall. And by all means, stop rolling the work plane it is most annoying.

Thank you very much for your videos. Could be interesting a tutorial about creation of window types with partdesign.
Good idea! Adding that to my todo list

Indeed, it needs to undoubtly find closed loops in a sketch. The best solution is to leave a small gap (1mm or so) between different loops

is it possible to stretch a window ( in height and width) in the perspective view and not change it in the property by numbers ?
Not yet. But that's something that's in my plan to do. Not only for windows, but all bim objects.
That´s great. It should be possible for an architect to model all the objects at a facade
