- I joined the Basic Cartooning Workshop held by the Samahang Kartunista ng Pilipinas (Philippine Cartoonists' Association). It is held in lieu of the Slices of Life, Wit and Humor exhibit tour at the Gateway Mall in Cubao, which honored Philippine National Artist and well-loved editorial cartoonist, Larry Alcala. I learned basic tips in creating a comics character and making short stories in three-panel comic strips. You have to know lots of dad jokes and memes to make a good one! 😅
Thank you, SKP, especially Arch. Ed Padilla, who graced me with a short interview about the importance of comics in today's culture.
This piece is beautiful and interesting to watch😍
Sucha wonderful video. Loved knowing all the history of cartooning. Love your character... 🧡🧡... Love art
Thank you 🥰
That sounds like an incredible experience! Keep cartooning and spreading those smiles! 🌟
Thank you! Yes, I hope they have more workshops like this or an in-depth class 😄🙏
I love this! I grew up on Larry Alacala's cartoons---Slice of Life from Philippine Star, Mod Caps from Mod Magazine, Bing Bang Bum from Funny Comics and I even had a book compilation of Mang Ambo! Thanks for giving me a peek into the exhibit and workshop!
You welcome! I miss his Slice of Life! After it ended when he passed, that's when I also stopped buying Phil. Star every Sunday 😭 He sure has left a great legacy to our generation 🤩
Really love the backstory to this! And it’s really fascinating how it’s used in serious situations as well. Have fun situations with the whole cartoon theme.
The comic strip was amazing and literally looked like something you would find in a real magazine! Really brilliant work. You are a true creative in every sense. ❤
@@ExtremelyBerry Thank you so much! I would have liked the comic translated into English, but the momentum of the pun would be ruined hehe. Filipinos are crazy when they make jokes 😂
Beautiful Art always i remember we had a book like this at home
My husband was into comic strips. I remember he made a few for our youth bulletin back in the day. He also made one for his highschool batch.
Nice! I hope your hubby preserved them. I'd like to see his works, too! 😁
That was really awesome and so well drawn. You’re filled with so much of knowledge to draw . Cartoon characters are not easy to draw but you’re doing it amazing. Keep going you rock ❤
@@tinaperee Really appreciate your compliment! 🤗💕 I remember an uncle dreaming of becoming a comic strip artist, I never thought I'd like to become one, too. It's a whole different league for me! 😁
Yes I enjoyed the video Thelma este, Rhema! I t's so good that you have been interviewing these influential people and have opportunities like these featured in your vlog. You awakened another talent that you have and I believe your time of convergence is coming!
Yassss! 🤩🙌
Thank you for the heads up!
Keep sharing dear, this video is very helpful
Not sure if you're paying attention to the video, but the video is more about my experience from the workshop. So, tbh, your comment is very vague 🤷♀️ But I'm hoping you got the idea of the video, anyway. Anyway, thank you for watching.
Oh wow, that was entirely a different experience for me, it was so captivating that I found interest in that , I would like to see more content on that .thank you so much for sharing ❤
Thank you! Glad to know your thoughts about this. Hopefully, I can have more workshops like this 😃
Wow! It's wonderful to hear how much you learned from the workshop. I love comic strips. Art is truly fascinating and inspiring. Your talent and creativity shine through brilliantly. Keep up the amazing work, sis! 🫶🏽
Really appreciate your encouraging words, sis 🤗💕
You are so easy to watch and connect with! Your art work as squally is just amazing. I had never thought of cartoons although my daughters love drawing cartoon style. I will have to show them your video!
Always love seeing the bloopers too, the look you have at the end 🤣 thanks for another lovely video xx
Ooooh cool! Thank you! Hope your daughters will love this video, too 🤩 Really appreciate your very kind comment and glad you enjoyed the bloopers! 😁🥰
This such a neat video. I had 2 students with Autism that drew daily. When I allowed them to express themselves they started reading etc.
That's awesome! Reminds me of a niece if mine, also on a spectrum, who also improved when her mom let her go free through gymnastics. When you let kids go free their expressions, they feel at home and are willing to learn with the people around them. 🤩
I love watching 😊
After watching this, I might finally try drawing my own comic strip!
Yasss!! You can do it 🤩🙌
That’s cool that you got to take a comic strip art class!!
Cool how you made your characters off of real life people! I like Thelma!☺️
Thanks! Liking Thelma is liking meeee haha just kidding 😆 I have a lot more ideas in my head about Thelma so I hope I can make those comic strips 😄
I enjoyed watching this. Learnt some new stuff - I used to draw when I was younger, loved it so this is nostalgic 😊
Nice! Drawing cartoons is still fun even when we're already adults 😄
I tried to read your comic strip! Alas I don’t know how to read Filipino. I do think you would do very well in this form of art. You could marry drawing and writing! ❤ I loved the video! ❤
It's hard to translate the punchlines to English! LOL! 🤣 Glad you enjoyed this! Looks like they were effective because some of my friends laughed when I showed it to them 😊
Great skill 😮❤ Your level of confidence is amazing and motivating us 👍🏻👍🏻👌👌
Glad to know that! Thank you for watching 🤩
Sweet! Good demonstration as always, seems fun and unique project.
Thank you! The SKP are actually holding more of these events in Manila. I think there are many more workshops like this in the Philippines held by other artists because most Filipinos are comic cartoon fans 🙂 (We're a comic strip/book culture, actually 😁)
Love this beautiful art work, I'm amazed at the work of your hands dear. Looks like an incredible experience ❤
Thank you, my friend 🤗💕
So cool 🎉
PS I have enjoyed the endings of the three videos I just watched. You are a kick!
Thank you! I really happy that you find my bloopers amusing 😄 It's something to remind my old self who I was haha 😆
This is so cool!! You’re very talented!
Thank you! 😄
If I knew how to draw, I'm sure I was also going to be a cartoonist. I like them because they are cute little things that can tell a story.
You can try 😄 As our trainer said, it doesn't require a really complicated drawing. Most of them are simple in fact. Comics are really fun to read, aren't they? 😁
Wow, I love your comic Rhema!! It turned out great! 👍😊👍💜
Yey! Thank youuu 🤩
Cool amazing 😍🤩
Very cool! I like how you are always trying different mediums and styles!
It's fun to (re)learn new things 😄 Thank you so much for watching, brother! 🤩
Ashlynn loves drawing you have beautiful art work and what amazing useful tips
Nice! I hope she can show her drawings, too 🥰 Thank you so much for watching 🤩
That looks so fun! Love what you created!
Thank you! 😍
That looks so cool! Love the cartoon style ☀️
Yeah! It'a a classic style, but timeless! 🤩
Worshops are a great way to learn new skills or update your existing skill set. 😊
Yep! And it's nice getting to know a new comminity of artists, too 😄
@@rhemasartspace Yes! Networking is 😎.
I absolutely adore cartoon art. I try and employ animation and cel-shaded content in my work where I can. Sadly a lot of people in the West equate cartoons with children :( I’m loving this video though - soma amazing styles for sure :)
Thank you 🤗💕 It's ironic that many people think that cartoons are for kids, but truth is that cartoons have a lot of adult elements in them, especially when you employ political jokes and sarcasm into these characters 😆 Cartoons are actually a reflection of real life people 😃
I love comic strips. i hope you will use these lessons to start your own faith-based comic strip and post regular installments of said strip. That would allow you to combine your art and writing interests.
Hopefully! 🙏🙏🙏
This is such a fascinating topic! I recently started learning to cartoon myself. Did the National Cartoonist mention any advice on character design or developing a unique style?
The workshop actually has a module on how to create a character. But their very idea is just let your style flow. No strict rules on how to create a character. The best inspiration, they said, is to base it on real life people, like making a caricature of them. So much inspiration can be gained from real life experiences 😄
It turned out really nice
Thank you 😄
That workshop looked so much fun. Are you happy with what you learned there?
I sure did! Their tips were really helpful and they really talked to each of us and gave us pointers on what to improve. 👍👏
Everything looks so cool. You mentioned you missed drawing cartoons. Do you have any new cartoon art pieces since joining this workshop? 🌻
Actually, I haven't made up new ones. But I have something planned and hopefully, I'd be able to make them soon 😁
Rhema did you have a course in history or every art exhibition has a history attached to it?
Ahaha! That's a very funny thought. I just grew up on Larry Alcala comics. A lot of us did in the Philippines, so many kids back in the 90s are familiar with Alcala's works. Comics was like our entertainment staple during the days when Netflix did not exist yet. You can easily research about exhibits on Google so no need for hard courses 😊
My great aunt’s name is Thelma. She didn’t look like your sketch though.
Cool! Thelma's a really classy name, I think. That's why that congressman (God bless him wherever he is now) had that name stuck in his mind 😆
