    I checked out the store, and for anybody curious Goodell sells the slugs at $21.25 for 25 slugs for most of them, and he has a ton of varieties to choose from. Thanks for giving both companies a shoutout, it's good to know of them!

      I've been clamoring for someone to sell just the slugs - even suggesting they sell them on Ebay. Ryan even had some molds custom made for him. It seems like every day I check, he's added something new to the site. He still has a lot of work to do.

    Gatekeeper vs armed intruder is a non-contest. A center mass shot is going to do a Ninja blender to heart, lungs, liver, major arteries and spinal column. As a former Trauma Tech, I feel comfortable saying that even a "badly placed" shot will likely be instantly fatal, or at the very least, totally incapacitating.

    The Gatekeeper is BRUTAL. If there was ever a shotgun round designed to take down small to medium-sized dinosaurs, it'd probably be that one.

    • @TheOriginalFaxon
      @TheOriginalFaxon 2 роки тому +17

      I would honestly say it depends on the dinosaur. Some of the armored ones you would need a .700 nitro loaded with a brass solid, to get enough energy on target and penetrate. A .50 BMG might honestly be a better choice at that point given a .700 nitro costs like $100 a shell while packing less muzzle energy. A specially designed hollow point .50 BMG round could easily be more devastating for a fraction of the price, probably being priced comparably to a pair of these gatekeeper slugs. For home defense shooting a man sized target though, I'd pick that gatekeeper slug all day

    • @ScottLovenberg
      @ScottLovenberg 2 роки тому +7

    My best guess, If the impact force is high enough and enough heat/high pressure is created just about anything can combust. In this case it was a detonation with air and the gasses of the plastic seal (or the sill putty) created on impact. Thanks for another great video 👍

    I found the "gatekeeper" slugs for sale! Not loaded ammo, the slugs themselves, for $2.43/ea. They're produced by a company called "Maker Bullets" under the name "Rex". Although according to their website they are 435gr and not 460gr, I'm assuming the 435gr is without the gas seal/tail piece.

      When I checked their website (at least the one that googlebox led me to) the browser said it was broken. (Edit: I just remembered that it wasn't Maker's website that was broken, it was ARM's) Do you have a link to the website that worked for you? I would actually be trying to buy just the slugs because of import/export issues that may arise through an individual attempting to ship ammunition internationally. Just importing the copper projectile and loading on my end may be more feasible. On a side note, it may help that this one has a more neutral name "Rex" instead of "Gatekeeper", as something intended for "self defence" may have import issues. On the other hand I'm looking at these as an anti-bear round, or for other dangerous game, and having a neutral name or one that reflects being used for hunting or livestock protection would help at the border.
      Edit: I tried looking up the name and it led to their T-Rex line.
      Additional Edit: I found it. I'll drop their SKU for the product to make finding it easier 12ga-435gr-REX-SLUG all one word.

    Good as I'm interested in seeing that odd spherical one in action.
    I got lucky and scored two boxes of the Gatekeeper shells as I've got a mag fed shotgun that holds 9+1. Yes, they're more expensive, but if I need more than those ten over the course of my lifetime, or in light of how lethal they are, even if I need all ten, well I figure the situation is above my paygrade anyway.
    For the Russian slug, my next firearm purchase is going to be one of those black powder Diablo shotgun pistols so I'll actually be investing in getting one of those molds so I can cast as many as I like - figure I might as well target shoot with what I'll be hunting with.

    I think the most effective slug (or bullet for that matter) would be one that acts like the gatekeeper slug and expands in the first few inches of flesh (let's say half) and then fragments like the twister in the last few.
    That would give you a massive entrance hold like a conventional hollow point but also increase your likelihood of hitting vital organs like a fragmenting slug

    • @taofledermaus
      @taofledermaus  2 роки тому +1

      The expansion or fragmentation is always going to occur after a inch or two where the speed, pressure and resistance is highest.

    Both of these slugs are just devastating, but I'm pretty sure the old standard foster slugs do a great job for the money and availability. I do live in a spot where over penetration in home defense situation is not a big issue though.

    Outstanding video and details. Gatekeeper is incredible performance and a true GUT BLASTER!! The clean up after the shot would be insane. The twister is on par IMO. Especially being available and able to create the ideal load for your defense or hunting needs.
    Watched again and see that the Twister is the one that exploded the pork shoulder thingy. IMO the twister slowed down just a little for HD is optimal due to fragmentation/energy dump/availability and you can load your own velocities.

    Good Lord, those things are violent on impact. We have a couple of .69 cal CW-era rifled muskets, would be neat to compare the two. Though I don't know how well I would handle a full service charge in that thing. I've only shot it with the roughly half-ish powder loads we use in competition, since we usually only shoot at 50 and 100 yards. It's incredibly rare that we ever need to reach out to 1000 yards. I have a feeling those slugs would still be quite a bit nastier due to the insane expansion, but it would be neat to see anyway.
