Good comparison, What you described without saying the word is planned obsolescence. A city is designed to be costly, with inadequate public transport means reliance on car and cabs and all the economy that surrounds it. There are fewer people out walking, manipulation of social behaviour. It is induced by conscious planning. Other reasons are superficial, crime is there as much in other cities. No one talk about it because, if the city become like europe, then other industry will lose out on a lot. Think about it, you cannot do anything in your place, without owning a car.

I also genuinely like to live in independent house rather than flats because flats kill livability and alienate us from rest of the environment and you just live in a concrete box up in the sky and no nature around you
