Only race I have ever been to. I was working with a factory in Jiading district, and happened to be staying at the same hotel as a lot of F1 people. I made friends with some South African TV presenters and they invited me to the race. Amazing experience.

I am from Shanghai. I grew up watching Schumacher dominating F1 with Ferrari. But for almost a decade, I had not been following the sport until Zhou made it into F1 in 2022. Now I feel I am rediscovering F1 with a hometown hero on the grid to root for. F1 are regaining massive popularity in China in the last coupe of years because of Zhou and the exposure to Drive to Survive. Now we finally have the 1st ever home GP for a Chinese driver and everyone is so hyped up. It is the hottest ticket in town right now. I really hoped we can have a much better experience for everyone watching/reporting the race this year.
The absolute irony of china having one of the best media centers is not lost on me.
Nothing is allowed to be distributed from the media center without scrutiny however.
F1 loves authoritarian regimes 💰💰
Formula one just gained so much popularty in China these years, tickets to Shanghai GP sold out in just 5mins. It took me so much effort to get tickets for Sat & Sun racing event and the tickets price in second hand market got several times more. Hope I could see you in Shanghai Kym, I just love your content so much!

One thing to point out is that those “police” are all, in fact, just security guys getting paid by the organizer to the event😂. Same goes for the “police”people would see in shopping malls or touristy spots in China. I know it’s kinda quirky for all the security guys here wearing very tacky police uniforms😂

Hi Kym thanks for introducing the race! But there are a few misunderstandings I shall explain as a local 😢 actually Shanghai Grand Prix is always in April and it’s normal to have a grey look because the weather is wet and cloudy during this season . If you come here in summer it will be quite sunny with super good sky. Another thing is that actually I did watch this video and many other f1 videos in China 😂wish you enjoy the race!

As a tifosi born and live here in Shanghai, I can tell you that the atmosphere for cars and racing is no where near places in Europe or America, but as you've said, local hero Zhou is bringing a lot of attention, and let's see how 2024 Chinese grand prix will turn out great (I am going there for the first time in my life to watch the Sunday race, I only watched a practice section back in 2018 when I was in primary school)

I went there years ago, the year hammy beached his car by the pits, there was nothing near the track back then.
I wanted to go this year but have not been able to secure tickets. Went on sale very late, then apparently sold out. To say I'll be disappointed if those stands are still tarped up will be an understatement

The empty grandstands situation will be no different this year. Grandstand B tickets will not even go on sale this year🤷🏻♂️, even with the construction looks finished already.
But the GP sold out in 5 minutes. Just like the rest of China things are not what they appear to be.

For a more western vibe I recommend the Xian Tian Di area. There you will find your European and American fare.

One thing is sure with Shanghai, do not keep a 5 year old memory. It changes so fast, especially with the car industry, I went before and after covid, the number of electric car, local brand, luxury car is just booming. Even aboard I spot several Chinese checking F1 on their phone, sounds like it getting popular.
Also don't forget to get Alipay before heading there, many foreigner forget and struggle, once it set it up it's quite straighforward, but much easier to do so outside China

04:35 Yeah, food wise it's not the sweet and sour chicken and stuff we used to in Europe (I mean Hungary, because I live here). The most delicious dishes were the fish and sea stuff.
In 2002 I've been in Guangzhou, Whenzou and Xiamen, courtesy of the company I worked for. In the daytime we didn't go to eat (that humidity/heat prevents you from being hungry), but at the evenings we've been treated like "kings".

The Shanghai circuit has been a mixed bag as far as F1 is concerned. It's a decent circuit, though, and it's good to see it back on the calendar.

I haven’t been to the China Grand Prix. It’s only two that I haven’t been to and frankly every time I’ve looked at the China Grand Prix on TV. It looks horrendous. you probably have better inside mail on why China at this track is on the calendar at all because if the people don’t go on mass what’s the point shows that either the people are not interested or the government doesn’t want to be interested? I don’t get it.

The Shanghai you knew back in 2018 is not the one that you will be going to in 2024. For starters, you're not going to be able to order and pay taxis manually - everything is done digitally now! Western food in Shanghai is also booming, so you should be able to find really good fare all around the city.
I hope you'll do another video after the Shanghai GP and let us know how your experience compares to 2018 :)

So I have a question. And you have more experience than me. So with that being his home country is that really going to sell tickets? No disrespect to him. But he's not a good driver at all. Like he stinks. Most likely won't have a seat next year. As an American. I would not buy a ticket to any of the three American races just to see Logan sergeant. He sucks too.
